  • Making Sense and Use of Assessments
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Educational Research. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0031-3831 .- 1470-1170. ; 63:5, s. 759-770
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present article is concerned with how Swedish students in the last year of comprehensive school make sense and use of educational assessments of their school performance. Based on interviews with 28 students in Year 9, “talk about assessments” is analysed using a discourse analytical approach inspired by Michel Foucault’s theories. The study shows that students find it difficult to both understand and make use of the assessments given by their teachers due to the overly complicated language. To receive the grades they need to apply for upper-secondary school, the students use other strategies to stand out and be perceived as “good students,” thus the assessment discourse is effective in the construction of adjustable subjects.

  • Mixing Logics. Multiagency Approaches for Countering Violent Extremism
  • 2019
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Acts of terror and increased activities in extremist milieus have stressed the need for developing policy to counter violent extremism (CVE) in the Nordic countries. In such policy, multiagency collaboration structures are given a central role in preventing the recruitment of youth to extremism. In this study of Nordic policies developed to counter extremism and prevent crime, we have mapped and compared the organization of multiagency collaboration the practices that are to be utilized and the legal frameworks that support these approaches. The findings reveal previously unknown discrepancies, similarities and differences between the Nordic countries that can help to inform a sometimes heated and polarized debate on how extremism is handled. By combining discourse analysis and organizational institutional theory, we provide a framework that conceptualizes multiagency collaboration structures as “hybrid spaces” where two different logics – a societal security logic and a social care logic – competes, mixes and co-exists. This framework gives some explanation to why multiagency collaboration sometimes evokes inter-organizational struggles and how such struggles are played out in work to counter violent extremism. This report summarizes the first part of the HEX-NA project (Handling Extremism - Nordic Approaches) and focuses on exploring different levels and types of policy on countering violent extremism in the Nordic countries (Iceland excluded). In the parts that follow, perceptions of among the public and public sector professionals will be explored and multiagency collaborative work in practice will be studied. HEX-NA is a three-year research project (2018-2021) funded by Nordforsk.

  • R-E-S-P-E-C-T! Feminine respectability and sexuality for young women online
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: First Monday. - : University of Illinois Libraries. - 1396-0466. ; 24:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, we explore aspects of femininity as social capital for young women in one of Sweden’s largest Facebook groups, designated for women only. By conceptualizing the online forum as an affinity space (Gee, 2005) and by using theoretical concepts of bridging and bonding capital we analyze entries in the Facebook group that we identify as the Girlfriends. Empirical material is selected from a larger dataset with a focus on entries where young women ask for and provide advice. This study illustrates how femininity is connected with normative notions of respectability and sexuality as female traits and that these are reinforced rather than reduced in interactions between women in the group. Such aspects of femininity can be used as a form of social capital for women online.

  • Signs of Concern about Islamic and Right-Wing Extremism on a Helpline against Radicalization
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal for Deradicalization. - 2363-9849. ; :18, s. 108-145
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Few initiatives and actions for dealing with and countering violent extremism and preventing terrorism focus on offering support to individuals who know people who are at risk of becoming involved in a violent extremist milieu. In Sweden, the non-governmental organization (NGO) Save the Children was commissioned to set up a support helpline specifically for these individuals. This study analyzed 98 documented helpline cases dealing with Islamic and right-wing extremist milieus, and explored what causes concern about radicalization as well as the similarities and differences in the causes of concern for these two milieus. The analysis reveals a somewhat normative radicalization discourse as a concern in Islamic extremism focused on religious practice and potential cognitive factors, while concern in right-wing extremism primarily occurs when a youth has joined an organization or practiced activism.
