- Zn-alpha2-glycoprotein (ZAG) is a serum protein implicated in cancer cachexia and lipolysis. Our aim was to investigate serum levels of ZAG and polymorphisms in the ZAG gene in relation to serum lipids in man. Serum levels of ZAG correlated with serum levels of cholesterol (P = .00088) in healthy subjects and during weight loss (P = .059). The ZAG genotype was associated with total cholesterol (P = .014) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (P = .026) in healthy subjects, and the associations were replicated in an additional cohort (P = .0017 and P = .060, respectively). Our data indicate that ZAG plays a role in lipid metabolism.

- Objective: Obesity is linked to both increased metabolic disturbances and increased adipose tissue macrophage infiltration. However, whether macrophage infiltration directly influences human metabolism is unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate if there are obesity-independent links between adipose tissue macrophages and metabolic disturbances. Design and Methods: Expression of macrophage markers in adipose tissue was analyzed by DNA microarrays in the SOS Sib Pair study and in patients with type 2 diabetes and a BMI-matched healthy control group. Results: The expression of macrophage markers in adipose tissue was increased in obesity and associated with several metabolic and anthropometric measurements. After adjustment for BMI, the expression remained associated with insulin sensitivity, serum levels of insulin, C-peptide, high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-cholesterol) and triglycerides. In addition, the expression of most macrophage markers was significantly increased in patients with type 2 diabetes compared to the control group. Conclusion: Our study shows that infiltration of macrophages in human adipose tissue, estimated by the expression of macrophage markers, is increased in subjects with obesity and diabetes and associated with insulin sensitivity and serum lipid levels independent of BMI. This indicates that adipose tissue macrophages may contribute to the development of insulin resistance and dyslipidemia.

- The conference Codex and Code: Aesthetics, Language and Politics in an Age of Digital Media (NorLit 2009)was held at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm, August 6–9, 2009. The conference was organized by the Nordic Association for Comparative Literature (NorLit); the Department of Culture and Communication, Linköping University; the School of Computer Science and Communication, Royal Institute of Technology (KTH); the Department of Comparative Literature, Stockholm University; the Department of Culture and Communication, Södertörn University College; and the Department of Comparative Literature, Uppsala University. The aim of the conference was to develop the study of Comparative Literature through Nordic collaboration both in its own discipline and in Modern Language and Cultural studies. As the title for the conference suggests, the principal question for the conference was the challenge that the study of literature encounters in an age of digitalization and globalization. It was our aim to encourage discussion of how literary studies respond to the ongoing changes in media and technology, politics and economy. Many have argued that the Humanities currently are in a state of crisis. We believe that the discipline seldom has found itself in such an interesting and fruitful historical moment. Several of these questions have surfaced during earlier media system changes, in particular during Romanticism and Modernism, which provided the conference with an historical frame. The conference Codex and Code also addressed questions of authenticity and originality, identity and gender, literary genres and reading practices, media and materiality, culture and popular culture, language and history, world literature, work aesthetics, translations, and canon formation. The conference Codex and Code wanted to stimulate interdisciplinary scholarly research of the literary in a broad sense. The conference was open to scholars in Comparative Literature and in Classical and Modern Languages, Aesthetics, Media and Communication studies, Film and Theatre studies, Philosophy and adjacent disciplines. The conference was organized around a number of thematic sessions in which researchers and scholars presented and discussed papers. The conference has received generous financial support from the Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation, Magnus Bergwall foundation, Granholms foundation, Linköping University, School of Computer Science and Communication, Royal Institute of Technology, Svenska litteratursällskapet; the Swedish Academy, Swedish Science Council, and Vitterhetsakademien.

- Objectives: In Sweden breathing exercises with Positive Expiratory Pressure (PEP) are commonly recommended for the prevention of pulmonary complications after abdominal surgery. Scientific documentation of the effects of PEP treatment is limited. The aim of this national survey was to describe the current physical therapy practice of PEP treatment after abdominal surgery in Sweden.Methods: A questionnaire was sent by e-mail to the 45 physical therapists who work with abdominal surgery patients in all seven university hospitals in Sweden. The questionnaire contained questions about the usage of PEP after abdominal surgery.Results: In total, 24 (54%) of the physical therapists answered the questionnaire. All reported using PEP as a treatment option after abdominal surgery. The most commonly used PEP device was the Blow bottle system and the PEP ventil system connected to a mouthpiece. Recommendations regarding treatment frequency and implementation varied significantly across respondents. The number of breaths per treatment varied considerably.Conclusion: All respondentsreported using PEP as a postoperative treatment on abdominal surgery wards. The treatment is most often recommended hourly during the first postoperative days. The common first-choice PEP devices were the Blow bottle system, Pep/Rmt set with mouthpiece or mask, Breathing exerciser/PEP valve system 22, and the Mini-PEP.

The geographies of knowledge in (making) artwork : The field, the art studio and the art scene

- This thesis is concerned with the professional knowledge processes that contemporary visual artists develop and use in their construction of art as well as of their careers. In contributing to the geographical literature on professional learning and artistic labour, the thesis explores the question of how self-employed artists generate, apply and communicate their knowledge and skills in the context of individual work projects.Drawing on London-based visual artists’ narratives and on material traces of their work processes – such as sketchbooks, collected objects and prototypes – the thesis presents artists as actors who learn through embodied but also mobile and geographically-sensitive processes.I argue that knowledge practice in the visual arts is the outcome of embodiment and individual experience, and hence that understanding practical knowledge and skills in this sphere requires us to explore the corporeal embeddedness of learners’ perception and action in their local environments. We must be alert to the various characters of artistic knowledge, involving non-cognitive, affective, haptic and emotive as well as cognitive, rational and reflective elements. Knowledge within the visual arts, in short, is multi-dimensional. The generation of artists’ knowledge, understandings and insights are suggested to be dependent and encouraged by different resources and stimuli acquired from a variety of spaces.The thesis demonstrates this multi-dimensionality by showing how artists construct their art, knowledge, careers and professional development through moving between different workspaces, and by exploring the mobile agencies that connect and separate such spaces. I argue that it is through movements – not only of artists but also of their work material – that knowledge and pieces of art emerge. In illustrating these movements, this study explores the micro-geographical knowledge sites of the field, the studio and the art scene.
