  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Chinese Physics C. - : IOP Publishing. - 1674-1137 .- 2058-6132. ; 38:9
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Review summarizes much of particle physics and cosmology. Using data from previous editions, plus 3,283 new measurements from 899 Japers, we list, evaluate, and average measured properties of gauge bosons and the recently discovered Higgs boson, leptons, quarks, mesons, and baryons. We summarize searches for hypothetical particles such as heavy neutrinos, supersymmetric and technicolor particles, axions, dark photons, etc. All the particle properties and search limits are listed in Summary Tables. We also give numerous tables, figures, formulae, and reviews of topics such as Supersymmetry, Extra Dimensions, Particle Detectors, Probability, and Statistics. Among the 112 reviews are many that are new or heavily revised including those on: Dark Energy, Higgs Boson Physics, Electroweak Model, Neutrino Cross Section Measurements, Monte Carlo Neutrino Generators, Top Quark, Dark Matter, Dynamical Electroweak Symmetry Breaking, Accelerator Physics of Colliders, High-Energy Collider Parameters, Big Bang Nucleosynthesis, Astrophysical Constants and Cosmological Parameters.

  • Anti-infectious and anti-inflammatory effects of peptide fragments sequentially derived from the antimicrobial peptide centrocin 1 isolated from the green sea urchin, Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: AMB Express. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2191-0855. ; 2:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Bacterial resistance against antibiotic treatment has become a major threat to public health. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) have emerged as promising alternative agents for treatment of infectious diseases. This study characterizes novel synthetic peptides sequentially derived from the AMP centrocin 1, isolated from the green sea urchin, for their applicability as anti-infective agents. The microbicidal effect of centrocin 1 heavy chain (CEN1 HC-Br), its debrominated analogue (CEN1 HC), the C-terminal truncated variants of both peptides, i.e. CEN1 HC-Br (1–20) and CEN1 HC (1–20), as well as the cysteine to serine substituted equivalent CEN1 HC (Ser) was evaluated using minimal microbicidal concentration assay. The anti-inflammatory properties were assessed by measuring the inhibition of secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines. All the peptides tested exhibited marked microbicidal and anti-inflammatory properties. No difference in efficacy was seen comparing CEN1 HC-Br and CEN1 HC, while the brominated variant had higher cytotoxicity. C-terminal truncation of both peptides reduced salt-tolerability of the microbicidal effect as well as anti-inflammatory actions. Also, serine substitution of cysteine residue decreased the microbicidal effect. Thus, from the peptide variants tested, CEN1 HC showed the best efficacy and safety profile. Further, CEN1 HC significantly reduced bacterial counts in two different animal models of infected wounds, while Staphylococcus aureus and methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) failed to develop resistance against this peptide under continued selection pressure. In summary, CEN1 HC appears a promising new antimicrobial agent, and clinical studies are warranted to evaluate the applicability of this AMP for local treatment of infections in man.

  • Assisted self-healing in ripped graphene
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 82:19, s. 195434-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A monolayer of sp(2)-bonded carbon (graphene) is a material with great technological promise because of, for example, its transport, electrical, optical, and mechanical properties. In this work noble gas diffusion through ripped graphene sheets is explored. The motivation is improved detection systems used worldwide to verify compliance of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty. It is demonstrated that even ripped graphene sheets and/or nonoverlapping graphene flakes inhibit noble gas diffusion. The latter has been shown for He and Xe where an infinitely long rip was constructed to have Stone-Wales edges. It is also shown that the ripped graphene layer self-heal in an alternating pentagon, hexagon, heptagon (5-6-7) and 7-6-5 pattern perpendicular to the rip. Moreover, the noble gas (He and Xe) assists in the healing process of wider rips.

  • Investigations of surface coatings to reduce memory effect in plastic scintillator detectors used for radioxenon detection
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0168-9002 .- 1872-9576. ; 656:1, s. 84-91
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this work Al(2)O(3) and SiO(2) coatings are tested as Xe diffusion barriers on plastic scintillator substrates. The motivation is improved beta-gamma coincidence detection systems, used to measure atmospheric radioxenon within the verification regime of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty. One major drawback with the current setup of these systems is that the radioxenon tends to diffuse into the plastic scintillator material responsible for the beta detection, resulting in an unwanted memory effect. Here, coatings with thicknesses between 20 and 900 nm have been deposited onto plastic scintillators, and investigated using two different experimental techniques. The results show that all tested coatings reduce the Xe diffusion into the plastic. The reduction is observed to increase with coating thickness for both coating materials. The 425 nm Al(2)O(3) coating is the most successful one, presenting a diffusion reduction of a factor 100, compared to uncoated plastic. In terms of memory effect reduction this coating is thus a viable solution to the problem in question.

  • Local proliferation and mobilization of CCR3(+) CD34(+) eosinophil-lineage-committed cells in the lung.
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Immunology. - : Wiley. - 1365-2567 .- 0019-2805. ; 132:1, s. 144-54
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Emerging evidence suggests that haematopoietic CD34(+) progenitor cells migrate from bone marrow (BM) to sites of allergen exposure where they can undergo further proliferation and final maturation, potentially augmenting the degree of tissue inflammation. In the current study we used a well-characterized mouse model of allergen-induced airway inflammation to determine the role of CCR3 receptor-ligand interactions in the migration and function of CD34(+) cells. Allergen exposure significantly increased BM, blood and airway CD34(+) CCR3(+) cells as well as airway CD34(+) CCR3(+) stem cell antigen-1-positive (Sca-1(+) ) and CD34(+) CD45(+) interleukin-5 receptor-α-positive (IL-5Rα(+) ) cells. A portion of the newly produced CD34(+) CCR3(+), Sca-1(+) CCR3(+) and IL-5Ralpha(+) lung cells showed a significant proliferative capacity in response to allergen when compared with saline-treated animals. In addition, in vitro colony formation of lung CD34(+) cells was increased by IL-5 or eotaxin-2 whereas eotaxin-2 had no effect on BM CD34(+) cells. Furthermore, both eotaxin-1 and eotaxin-2 induced migration of BM and blood CD34(+) CCR3(+) cells in vitro. These data suggest that the CCR3/eotaxin pathway is involved in the regulation of allergen-driven in situ haematopoiesis and the accumulation/mobilization of eosinophil-lineage-committed progenitor cells in the lung. Hence, targeting both IL-5 and CCR3-mediated signalling pathways may be required to control the inflammation associated with allergen-induced asthma.
