  • Anatomical variations of the human vestibular aqueduct : Part II. A radioanatomical study
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Acta Radiologica, Supplement. - 0365-5954. ; 403, s. 33-41
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The human vestibular aqueducts are classified into 3 types and into the types hyper-, normo- and hypoplastic. The types correspond with each other up to over 85%. For a better understanding of the radioanatomy and for the proper interpretation of radiograms, we describe the presence of a flat recess-like widening of the peripheral portion of the aqueduct, as well as other findings.

  • Anatomical variations of the human vestibular aqueduct : Part I. A radioanatomical study
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Acta Radiologica, Supplement. - 0365-5954. ; 403, s. 21-32
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Variations in the size and shape of the human vestibular aqueduct were evaluated in 118 plastic casts of unselected specimens of human temporal bones. They were examined by conventional radiography and by high resolution CT. The degree of the mastoid and perilabyrinthine pneumatization was defined and classified into 3 types. The dimensions of the peripheral portion of the aqueduct were found to be related to the extent of the perilabyrinthine pneumatization.

  • Anatomical variations of the tympanic and mastoid portions of the facial nerve canal. A radioanatomical investigation
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Acta Radiologica, Supplement. - 0365-5954. ; 403, s. 49-59
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The measurement results agree with those of previous investigations. The course of the tympanic portion is S-shaped and has an impression on its upper surface. High resolution CT reproduces dehiscences of the bony canal in a percentage similar to that of microscopical methods and in relevant sites. Pneumatization does not influence the dimensions of the 2 portions.

  • 2D inflow MR angiography in severe chronic leg ischemia
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Acta Radiologica. - 0284-1851 .- 1600-0455. ; 39:6, s. 663-668
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to compare 2D inflow MR angiography (MRA) with selective X-ray angiography (XRA) in patients with severe chronic leg ischemia. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In a blinded prospective study, 2D inflow MRA and XRA were compared with regard to evaluation of the arteries distal to the knee in 24 patients (median age 72 years) with severe ischemia; 23 of them had either rest pain or tissue loss. Statistics were calculated with XRA as the reference method. RESULTS: The interpretations of 2D inflow MRA and XRA showed moderate agreement in the calf arteries but poor agreement in the foot arteries. Of the discrepancies, two-thirds were observer-related and only one-third method-related. Of all the comparable arteries, 9% showed method-related differences between the two methods. An assessment of MRA using only maximum intensity projections (MIP) resulted in 19% of findings being judged inconclusive whereas all the arteries could be classified when the cross-sectional images were studied on the viewing console. CONCLUSION: The agreement between MRA and XRA was good in the calf but questionable in the foot.

  • Quantitation of atherosclerosis by magnetic resonance imaging and 3-D morphology operators
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Magnetic Resonance Imaging. - 0730-725X .- 1873-5894. ; 17:4, s. 585-591
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The objective was to ascertain whether MRI and image processing can be used to quantify atherosclerosis by measuring wall thickness in rabbit aorta. The abdominal aortas of 2 healthy and 5 atherosclerotic rabbits were examined with a gradient-echo inflow angiography sequence (2DI) and a proton density weighted turbo-spin-echo sequence (PDW). Using thresholding by four observers and 3D morphology operators, segmentation of the artery and vein lumina was performed from the 2DI sequence, and of surrounding fat and muscle from the PDW sequence. Remaining voxels adjacent to the aortic lumen were classified as vessel wall. By measuring the vessel wall volume and the lumen volume, the wall percentage was calculated. The values were significantly higher for the diseased animals than for unaffected individuals (p < 0.01). It is concluded that aortic wall thickening in atherosclerotic rabbits can be measured quantitatively by using MRI combined with 3D morphology image processing operators.
