  • Teaching Loyalty in the Late Ottoman Balkans: Educational Reform in the Vilayets of Manastir and Yanya, 1878-1912
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Comparative Studies of South Asia, Africa and the Middle East. - : Duke University Press. - 1089-201X .- 1548-226X. ; 21:1-2, s. 15-23
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Over the past thirty years scholars have paid a great deal of attention to how late-nineteenth-century educational reform affected the development of modern identities in Europe and the United States. Historians of the late Ottoman Empire have recently documented that the same theories of pedagogy that attracted much interest in Western Europe and America also influenced Ottoman thinking about education. Due to factors that I will discuss below, the Balkans in particular were the focus of educational reforms instituted during the reign of Sultan Abdülhamid II (1876-1909). The schools built in the Balkans, much like their European and American counterparts, were meant to inculcate a level of homogeneity over otherwise culturally diverse populations. While this interest in state-led education has subsequently influenced our understanding of the period, it may have obscured any potential appreciation for the very processes required for schools to actually complete their task of indoctrinating an entire population.

  • An Evaluation of the Relationship between Training of Health Practitioners in a Person-Centred Care Model and their Person-Centred Attitudes
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Integrated Care. - : Ubiquity Press. - 1568-4156. ; 23:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction: The Esther Network (EN) person-centred care (PCC) advocacy training aims to promote person-centred attitudes among health practitioners in Singapore. This study aimed to assess the relationship between the training and practitioners’ PCC attributes over a 3-month period, and to explore power sharing by examining the PCC dimensions of “caring about the service user as a whole person” and the “sharing of power, control and information”. Methods: A repeated-measure study design utilising the Patient-Practitioner Orientation Scale (PPOS), was administered to 437 training participants at three time points – before training (T1), immediately after (T2) and three months after training (T3). A five-statement questionnaire captured knowledge of person-centred care at T1 and T2. An Overall score, Caring and Sharing sub-scores were derived from the PPOS. Scores were ranked and divided into three groups (high, medium and low). Ordinal Generalised Estimating Equation (GEE) model analysed changes in PPOS scores over time. Results: A single, short-term training appeared to result in measurable improvements in person-centredness of health practitioners, with slight attenuation at T3. There was greater tendency to “care” than to “share power” with service users across all three time points, but the degree of improvement was larger for sharing after training. The change in overall person-centred scores varied by sex and profession (females score higher than males, allied health showed a smaller attenuation at T3). Conclusion: Training as a specific intervention, appeared to have potential to increase health practitioners’ person-centredness but the aspect of equalising power was harder to achieve within a hierarchical structure and clinician-centric culture. An ongoing network to build relationships, and a supportive system to facilitate individual and organisational reflexivity can reinforce learning.

  • Collective but Diverse: Preschool Teachers Networking to Develop Toddler Mathematics
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Mathematics Teacher Education and Development. - : Mathematics Education Research Group of Australasia (MERGA). - 1442-3901. ; 19:3, s. 3-16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article focuses on professional development among teachers within a Swedish national network on toddler mathematics education. The activities within this network can be understood as participant-oriented collective professional development based on a knowledge of practice approach. An inventory of toddler mathematics was performed within this network through observations of authentic mathematical activities. The inventory made diversity in the participating teachers’ perceptions of toddler mathematics visible; different activities were labelled similarly and opposite, similar activities were labelled differently. The inventory made clear the need for theoretical influence and discussions in practical inquiry. The addition of theoretical notions made previous invisible diversity among the network members visible, and strengthened the opportunities for further collective professional development. Diversity becoming visible contributed to the knowledge of practice approach, as well as the development of the professional language of the participating teachers.

  • Source-channel coding for wireless networks
  • 2006
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of source coding is to represent information as accurately as possible using as few bits as possible and in order to do so redundancy from the source needs to be removed. The aim of channel coding is in some sense the contrary, namely to introduce redundancy that can be exploited to protect the information when being transmitted over a nonideal channel. Combining these two techniques leads to the area of joint source–channel coding which in general makes it possible to achieve a better performance when designing a communication system than in the case when source and channel codes are designed separately. In this thesis two particular areas in joint source–channel coding are studied: multiple description coding (MDC) and soft decoding. Two new MDC schemes are proposed and investigated. The first is based on sorting a frame of samples and transmitting, as side-information/redundancy, an index that describes the resulting permutation. In case that some of the transmitted descriptors are lost during transmission this side information (if received) can be used to estimate the lost descriptors based on the received ones. The second scheme uses permutation codes to produce different descriptions of a block of source data. These descriptions can be used jointly to estimate the original source data. Finally, also the MDC method multiple description coding using pairwise correlating transforms as introduced by Wang et al is studied. A modification of the quantization in this method is proposed which yields a performance gain. A well known result in joint source–channel coding is that the performance of a communication system can be improved by using soft decoding of the channel output at the cost of a higher decoding complexity. An alternative to this is to quantize the soft information and store the pre-calculated soft decision values in a lookup table. In this thesis we propose new methods for quantizing soft channel information, to be used in conjunction with soft-decision source decoding. The issue on how to best construct finite-bandwidth representations of soft information is also studied.

  • Phylogenetic Studies in Usnea (Parmeliaceae) and Allied Genera
  • 2004
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis deals with the phylogeny of the lichen genus Usnea (Parmeliaceae, Ascomycetes). The relationships and the morphological variation among Usnea species has been studied, as well as the relationship of Usnea to allied genera. Two species, U. florida and U. subfloridana, which earlier were regarded to form two separate species have been synonymized. In an analysis based on sequence data these two taxa formed a monophyletic group of intermixed specimens. Usnea florida and U. subfloridana have earlier been regarded to form a species pair, but the species pairs concept cannot be applied in this case. The morphological characters traditionally used for species recognition of a number of European Usnea species have been analyzed regarding their reliability. The evolution and distribution of the morphological characters was studied in relation to a phylogeny based on sequence data. Most characters proved to be homoplastic in relation to the phylogeny. Few characters were consistent in a clade, and the same character could be inconsistent in another clade. Therefore a combination of several characters is recommended for species recognition. The relationship of Neuropogon to Usnea was investigated based on sequence data. Neuropogon showed to be closely related to Usnea subg. Usnea. The subgenera Eumitria and Dolichousnea formed the sister group to the clade comprising subg. Usnea and Neuropogon. Usnea is paraphyletic in this investigation. Eumitria is treated as a genus and the subgenus Dolichousnea is elevated to generic rank. The position of Usnea, Neuropogon, Eumitria, and Dolichousnea in the family Parmeliaceae was investigated based on a phylogeny obtained by sequence data. Protousnea probably forms the sister group to the clade of Usnea, Neuropogon, Eumitria, and Dolichousnea. Several monophyletic groups in the family Parmeliaceae were identified.

  • Swimming capacity and pleopod beat rate as a function of sex, size and moult stage in Northern krill Meganyctiphanes norvegica
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Marine Ecology-Progress Series. - 0171-8630. ; 250, s. 205-213
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An experimental method to estimate the relative swimming capacity of pelagic crustaceans is proposed. Swimming capacity measured as propulsive force can be estimated by attaching the animal to a virtually friction free rotational displacement transducer with an arm allowing only forward and backward movements. The method also allows determination of beat rates of the pleopod cycle. Results from the use of the method on different sizes, sexes and moult stages of Northern krill Aleganyctiphanes norvegica indicate that the swimming capacity of krill increases with the size of the animal, although pleopod beat frequency decreases with increasing size of the animal. We found no difference in swimming capacity between females and males, but female krill had a higher pleopod beat frequency than males. The moult stage of the animal affects the swimming capacity, with newly moulted krill being weaker swimmers. It also affects pleopod beat frequency, with newly moulted krill having the lowest frequency. We argue that results of this kind may be useful in attempts to interpret observed demographic distribution patterns in migration studies as well as in studies of krill population dynamics.

  • Volunteer Angling and Technology-Based Solutions Provide the First Estimate of Sea Lice Infections for Wild Coastal Cutthroat Trout (Oncorhynchus Clarkii Clarkii)
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Fisheries. - : Wiley. - 0363-2415 .- 1548-8446. ; 48, s. 97-106
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Anadromous Coastal Cutthroat Trout Oncorhynchus clarkii clarkii are one of the least studied salmonids but are a highly prized target in sport fisheries in coastal waters of the Pacific Northwest. Despite an observed high prevalence of ectoparasite infections, described by sport anglers as "sea lice," there is a paucity of data available on the spatial and temporal occurrence of infections on Coastal Cutthroat Trout. We collaborated with the angling community through social media engagement and an online application to report ectoparasites observed on sport catch. In 2018, we received voluntary reports for 1,493 Cutthroat Trout and 416 salmon catch events in marine waters from the province of British Columbia and the states of Washington, Oregon, and California. These data demonstrated that the number of argulids and copepods per trout varied according to body size, capture month, and area. To evaluate accuracy of voluntary parasite counts, we compared results to parasite counts on cutthroat from sampling events conducted by trained biologists. For both voluntary angler reports and those of biologists, spring months had a lower prevalence of argulids and copepods, argulids were common on trout, but absent on salmon, and larger trout were associated with an increased number of argulid and copepod infections.
