  • The impact of investments in innovation practices on competitive advantage.
  • 2014
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In an increasingly competitive environment, technical innovation in products and processes is by a vast number of manufacturing companies regarded as one of the most powerful enablers to differentiate from competitors and achieve competitive advantage. Accordingly, some manufacturing companies spend significant amounts of investments in innovation projects. In this paper, we examine the relationship between financial investments in innovation practices and competitive advantage. The results show that there is not a significant correlation between both constructs and higher financial investments do not necessarily lead to an increased competitive advantage.

  • Social responsible supply chain and packaging - A conceptual framework
  • 2013
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Purpose - To provide an integrative framework by developing a conceptual model of driving factors and outcomes of Socially Responsible Supply Chain-based orientation (SRSC) and the incorporation of this orientation to the Socially Responsible packaging. Design/methodology/approach - By reviewing the literature in SCM, Packaging, marketing and CSR, appropriate constructs and related scale items were identified. Then, a panel of experts from academia and industry were consulted due to further improvements of the design of the study. Findings - To this point, resources and capabilities as driving factors have been largely left unexplored and the effect of these forces on socially responsible supply chain-based orientation, packaging and competitive advantage are brought to surface as further fruitful perspectives for future research. Research limitations/implications (if applicable) - This research mainly addresses the managerial issues and assists industrial managers to better steer theirs supply chain management and packaging decisions in order to achieve a sustainable competitive advantage. Practical implications - Pre-existence of strategic resources could trigger a socially responsible supply chain and packaging orientation that in fact affect the competitive advantage for the entire supply chain. Social implications - Social responsibility can only yield positive benefits to competitive advantage as an opportunity and is truly embedded within the organization and developed according to the corporations and the supply chains characteristics. Originality/value - This paper provides an inimitable conceptual model, which merges two areas and provide a comprehensible proposal for future multi-disciplinary research in CSR and Packaging.

  • Models and software for corrugated board and box design
  • 2011
  • In: Proceedings of the 18th International Conference on Engineering Design (ICED 11) : Impacting Society through engineering design - Impacting Society through engineering design. ; 10, s. 392-401
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • To design and develop boxes which protect, and at the same time utilize fiber material efficiently, models and software for predicting corrugated board and box properties are needed. The purpose of this research is to provide propositions toward improving the use and development of models and software for corrugated board and box design. By using an abductive approach, 18 models and four software for predicting corrugated board and box properties were identified, compared, and categorized depending on the needs of different supply chain actors. Eight of the models use paper properties for predicting board properties while ten models predict corrugated box properties. In orderto decrease the gap between theory and practice new insights, in the form of propositions toward improving the use and development of models and software for corrugated box design, are suggested. A holistic perspective for modeling corrugated board and box is proposed and enables practitioners and researchers to identify causes to variation in predictions by considering control and noise factors.

  • Packaging Design and Development for Supply Chain Efficiency and Effectiveness
  • 2014
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • In the supply chain interactions with product and packaging systems, actors place various needs on packaging. Satisfying these needs eventually increases the supply chain efficiency and effectiveness. The aim of the research presented is to contribute to the packaging logistics body of knowledge on reducing the gap between the supply chain needs and satisfying them, through packaging design and development directed toward increasing supply chain efficiency and effectiveness. This research was carried out in a university-industry collaboration on problems in industrial practice and then matched to the academic literature in the field. A pre-investigation and four main investigations were conducted. Investigations 1, 2 and 3 were primarily related to the physical function of the supply chain toward increasing its efficiency. Investigation 4 was based on the market mediation function of the supply chain toward increasing its effectiveness. Toward increasing supply chain efficiency, this dissertation provides an expanded operational life cycle based on supply chain needs by exploring supply chain interactions with the product and packaging system. In addition, an improved packaging design and development method based on the expanded operational life cycle is provided to satisfy the actor’s needs. This was achieved by exploring and analyzing an existing packaging design and development method for satisfying the supply chain needs. By identifying available models and software for corrugated board packaging design and development and exploring their use in industrial practice, this dissertation suggests using a p-diagram as a method to provide a holistic perspective for modeling corrugated board packaging in the improved design and development method. Toward increasing supply chain effectiveness, the dissertation further provides improvement to a model for matching supply chain strategy and product while highlighting the role of packaging by describing the current state of supply chain strategy research in relation to product and packaging in order to map the lack of consideration of packaging. This dissertation concludes that packaging can contribute to both supply chain effectiveness and efficiency if it is matched to the supply chain strategy and if it is designed and developed to satisfy physical supply chain needs.

  • Packaging in developing countries – Identifying supply chain needs
  • 2012
  • In: Journal of Humanitarian Logistics and Supply Chain Management. - 2042-6755. ; 2:2, s. 183-205
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Purpose: To explore packaging in developing countries by means of identifying and describing supply chain needs regarding packaging. Design/methodology/approach: The research approach is qualitative and includes an embedded single case study of ambient milk supply chains in developing countries. Data collection is based on the review of internal company documents, semi-structured interviews with industrial experts and field observations. Findings: The paper shows that secondary packaging is a vital supply chain component in these countries and that there are extensive interactions between packaging and the supply chain. The findings constitute a list of supply chain needs regarding secondary packaging broken down into categories. Moreover, propositions for managing the supply chain needs and challenges of packaging in developing countries are presented. Research limitations/implications: In the supply chains investigated, the focus is on the actors from the filling point at the manufacturer to the point of sale at retail stores in the ambient milk sector. To understand general aspects, we suggest further studies to test propositions developed in other contexts. Practical implications: The proposed list of packaging supply chain needs and suggested propositions provides insights into the issues and challenges of packaging as a part of designing and planning supply chains in developing countries and, by implication, in humanitarian supply chains that often (but not always) operate in such environments. Originality/value: This research complements previous research in the areas of packaging and supply chain management by exploring supply chain needs regarding packaging in developing countries. It extends the traditional perspective of humanitarian logistics by linking supply chain thinking in developing countries to long-term development and disaster relief logistics.

  • Supply Chain Needs on Packaging in Developing Countries
  • 2010
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Purpose of this paper: To identify, describe and categorise supply chain needs on secondary packaging for ambient milk products in developing countries. Design/methodology/approach: The research approach is qualitative and includes an embedded single case study of ambient milk supply chains in developing countries. Data collection is based on the review of internal company documents and semi-structured interviews with industrial experts. Findings: The paper shows that secondary packaging is a vital supply chain component in developing countries and that there are extensive interactions between packaging and the supply chain. The findings also constitute a list of supply chain needs on secondary packaging broken down into six categories. Research limitations/implications: In the investigated supply chains, the focus is on the actors from the filling point at manufacturers to the point of sale at retail stores in the ambient milk sector. Furthermore, the focus is on aseptic carton packages as primary and regular slotted cartons as secondary packaging. Practical implications: The proposed list of packaging supply chains needs can serve as input to the package design process in order to improve the effectiveness of packages in the supply chain in developing countries. What is original/value of paper: This study complements previous research in the area of packaging and supply chain by exploring supply chain needs on packaging systems in developing countries as a less studied part of a globalised economy.
