  • Trends and Challenges in Nordic Gender Geography
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Socio-Spatial Theory in Nordic Geography. - Cham : Springer. - 9783031042331 - 9783031042348 - 9783031042362 ; , s. 127-146
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The development of Nordic gender geography is closely related to societal transformation. The way the gendered labour market is structured and re-structured is a recurrent theme for investigation. In this chapter, we discuss Nordic gender geography since its establishment in the 1980s, with the aim of scrutinising long-term and contemporary trends and challenges. We discern an engagement in issues based on socio-spatial conditions, where agency, identity and intersectional perspectives work together with materiality, institutions and structures. Nordic gender geography thereby contributes with a contextual gender theory, emphasising space as both a designer and an interpreter of gender relations. Regional and local gender relations become a player in the structure-agency relationship, and we argue that socio-spatial gender theorising can modify the idea of universal and all-embracing theoretical explanation of how gender is constructed. Nordic gender geography constitutes a prevailing and growing potential for a significant contribution to gender theory and to socio-spatial analysis of power.

  • ‘A spanner in the works’: exploring the relationship between provision of welfare and integration in rural areas
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Assessing the social impact of immigration in Europe. - : Edward Elgar Publishing. - 978 1 80392 768 8 ; , s. 201-217
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Nordic welfare model is built on the logic of equality and equal access to welfare goods. However, the rollback of the state from rural areas in the Nordic countries has been significant, and unequal access to essential welfare services such as schools, infrastructure, and healthcare is pronounced. The relationship between the provision of welfare services and refugee settlement, including integration measures and policy, is the departure point when investigating and explaining possibilities to provide the prerequisites needed to achieve ‘full economic, social, cultural, and political participation’, the goal of the prevailing European Commission Action Plan on Integration and Inclusion 2021-2027. While refugees are often placed and encouraged to settle in rural areas, these areas may not always be well equipped to fulfil the population’s needs in the first place. The chapter builds on a qualitative case study from the Swedish rural region of Dalarna, and the results are analysed within the framework of rural justice.

  • Chasing Moving Targets in Rural Spaces : Local Policing and Drug-Related Interventions
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Professional Geographer. - : Taylor & Francis. - 0033-0124 .- 1467-9272. ; 74:2, s. 377-383
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Globalization in rural areas is commonly described in terms of both challenges and opportunities. Opportunities include increased communication and reduced distance. These factors, however, are also favorable for illicit activities such as increased opportunities for marketing drugs on the Internet and reduced barriers for transporting drugs. The drug industry is global and involves cross-site processes, but the drug problem is very local. This article discusses how drug activities infiltrate the work of professionals in rural places and the way this affects rural people and their living environment. In local communities, the police have the authority to counteract the spread and use of drugs, an authority that is described as geographically thinned. That is, police as well as other professionals combating the effects of drug abuse are affected as local cooperation, which is often encouraged by short distances, dense networks, and local knowledge, is weakened. Using a qualitative interview approach, this study argues that local practices related to prevention of drug-related crime are poorly equipped to deal with the speed and range of the contemporary drug trade.

  • Integration and rural space in Sweden : a three-dimensional approach
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: New methods and theory on immigrant integration. - Cheltenham; Northampton : Edward Elgar Publishing. - 9781803929811 - 9781803929828 ; , s. 33-50
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter discusses the three-fold model of rural space. Its three dimensions of integration are discussed to examine how integration takes shape and works within diverse layers of society: spatial practice or perceived material space (distance, physical context, population density, institutions, rules and regulations); representations of space or conceived or imagined space (how the integration of migrants in rural areas is expressed in e.g. public documents or media); and spaces of representation or lived space (how integration is practiced in lived life). Also, the coherence between the dimensions is of interest, in terms of how they might connect or disconnect. This analysis is based on a Swedish case of refugee migration to rural areas. Based on the premise that integration is a multidimensional process, this chapter presents a theoretical approach with the capacity to both separate and bring the dimensions together. The empirical material consists of policy documents, official reports and qualitative interviews. The added value of this chapter is how policy formulation and implementation interact with representations and lived life, and how these dimensions find expression and interact.

  • 2020
  • Ingår i: New rural geographies in Europe. - : LIT publishing. - 9783643913029 ; , s. 173-186
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Europe is a meaningful frame and research topic for rural geography. This edited volume assembles 14 contributions from various countries that shed light on the variety, as well as the differences and commonalities of rural regions in Europe. The book aims at initiating general reflections about common development mechanisms and structures in the European context in contrast with specific national conditions and path dependencies. By assembling both regional and country case studies as well as cross-national comparisons, the volume provides a sound basis for future European research in rural geography. It pleads for more cross-national and comparative approaches. This edited volume is the sixth publication of the series “Rural areas: Issues of local and regional development”. It aims at intensifying scholarly exchange on topical questions of social, political, economic and landscape-related transformations of rural areas in Germany and Europe.
