  • In-plane permeability measurements : stability, repeatability and reproducibility
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: ICCM-12 Europe. - Tours : ICCM. - 2951452624
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Three methods to measure the in-plane permeability have been compared by theoretical analysis and repeated measurements. Based on this comparison the saturated parallel flow technique is suggested for continued evaluation. The stability of this method is better than 1%. However when doing repeatable measurements with new samples the averaged standard deviation increases to 14 % and 20 % for the two fabrics tested. By a round-robin comparison at three laboratories it is found that the reproducibility of the saturated parallel flow technique is in the same range as the repeatability of the method. It is clear that the scatter is due to the sample preparation, variations in the material and the method of loading the sample. Accordingly, a continued work should be concentrated on improvements of the sample preparation, and developments of methods to reduce the influence, from small errors, in sample preparation and sample loading on the results.

    • Arg15 is a conserved active-site residue in class Alpha glutathione transferases. X-ray diffraction studies of human glutathione transferase Al-1 have shown that N-epsilon of this amino acid residue is adjacent to the sulfur atom of a glutathione derivati

  • Expression of the Arp protein, a member of the M protein family, is not sufficient to inhibit phagocytosis of Streptococcus pyogenes
  • 1995
  • Ingår i: Infection and Immunity. - 1098-5522. ; 63:1, s. 345-348
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many Streptococcus pyogenes immunoglobulin-binding proteins have structural similarities to the antiphagocytic M protein, including the well-known C repeats. One of these molecules is the immunoglobulin A-binding protein Arp, which is expressed by a serotype 4 strain for which no antiphagocytic M protein has yet been described. We expressed Arp4 in an S. pyogenes strain from which the structural gene for the M protein has been deleted and found that Arp4 is not sufficient to inhibit phagocytosis.

  • The picture superiority effect in a cross-modality recognition task
  • 1995
  • Ingår i: Memory & Cognition. - 0090-502X .- 1532-5946. ; 23:4, s. 425-441
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Words and pictures were studied, and recognition tests were given in which each studied object was to be recognized in both word and picture format. The main dependent variable was the latency of the recognition decision. The purpose was to investigate the effects of study modality (word or picture), of congruence between study and test modalities, and of priming resulting from repeated testing. Experiments 1 and 2 used the same basic design, but the latter also varied retention interval. Exp. 3 added a manipulation of instructions to name studied objects, and Exp. 4 deviated from the others by presenting both picture and word referring to the same object together for study. The results showed that congruence between study and test modalities consistently facilitated recognition. Furthermore, items studied as pictures were more rapidly recognized than items studied as words. With repeated testing, the second instance was affected by its predecessor, but the facilitating effect of picture-to-word priming exceeded that of word-to-picture priming. The findings suggest a two-stage recognition process, in which the first is based on perceptual familiarity, and the second uses semantic links for a retrieval search. Common-code theories which grant privileged access to the semantic code for pictures are supported by the findings, or alternatively dual-code theories which assume mnemonic superiority for the image code. Explanations of the picture superiority effect as resulting from dual encoding of pictures are not supported by the data.

  • Measurements of Gas Concentrations in a Fluidized Bed Combustor Using Laser-Induced Photoacoustic Spectroscopy and Zirconia Cell Probes
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Combustion and Flame. - 1556-2921 .- 0010-2180. ; 113:4, s. 477-486
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The dynamic combustion behavior of a circulating, fluidized bed boiler (CFB) was studied using two high-speed gas analysis systems during the combustion of coal, pear, and wood chips. Time-resolved concentrations of SO2 and NO were measured by laser-induced photoacoustic spectroscopy (LIPS). A zirconia-cell based probe (lambda-probe), synchronized with the LIPS probe, measured fluctuations between reducing and oxidizing conditions. The two probes were positioned in the same measurement volume on the centerline of the CFB combustion chamber. The purpose of the work was to investigate the behavior of the LIPS in a combustion chamber containing reacting gases in order to extend the previous h-probe measurements to other gas components. Correlations between oxidizing and reducing conditions and gas species concentrations in three locations in the combustion chamber are presented. The best correlations were found in the upper part of the CFB combustion chamber. In some cases the correlation between reducing conditions and the LIPS signal was caused by unburnt hydrocarbons. Average values of [NO] and [SO2] obtained by the LIPS system were compared with the results from a sampling probe connected to on-line analyzers. The measurements of [NO] and [SO2] were disturbed by interfering gases during reducing conditions. During a sufficiently long time of oxidizing conditions, however, reasonable agreement was obtained between LIPS measurements of [NO] and [SO2] and those of the on-line analyzers. On some occasions (low SO2 concentration) the concentration of the OH radical was also measured.
