  • Neutrinos below 100 TeV from the southern sky employing refined veto techniques to IceCube data
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Astroparticle physics. - : ELSEVIER. - 0927-6505 .- 1873-2852. ; 116
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many Galactic sources of gamma rays, such as supernova remnants, are expected to produce neutrinos with a typical energy cutoff well below 100 TeV. For the IceCube Neutrino Observatory located at the South Pole, the southern sky, containing the inner part of the Galactic plane and the Galactic Center, is a particularly challenging region at these energies, because of the large background of atmospheric muons. In this paper, we present recent advancements in data selection strategies for track-like muon neutrino events with energies below 100 TeV from the southern sky. The strategies utilize the outer detector regions as veto and features of the signal pattern to reduce the background of atmospheric muons to a level which, for the first time, allows IceCube searching for point-like sources of neutrinos in the southern sky at energies between 100 GeV and several TeV in the muon neutrino charged current channel. No significant clustering of neutrinos above background expectation was observed in four years of data recorded with the completed IceCube detector. Upper limits on the neutrino flux for a number of spectral hypotheses are reported for a list of astrophysical objects in the southern hemisphere.

  • TOI-332 b: a super dense Neptune found deep within the Neptunian desert
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. - 0035-8711 .- 1365-2966. ; 526:1, s. 548-566
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To date, thousands of planets have been discovered, but there are regions of the orbital parameter space that are still bare. An example is the short period and intermediate mass/radius space known as the 'Neptunian desert', where planets should be easy to find but discoveries remain few. This suggests unusual formation and evolution processes are responsible for the planets residing here. We present the discovery of TOI-332 b, a planet with an ultra-short period of 0.78 d that sits firmly within the desert. It orbits a K0 dwarf with an effective temperature of 5251 ± 71 K. TOI-332 b has a radius of R, smaller than that of Neptune, but an unusually large mass of 57.2 ± 1.6 M. It has one of the highest densities of any Neptune-sized planet discovered thus far at g cm-3. A 4-layer internal structure model indicates it likely has a negligible hydrogen-helium envelope, something only found for a small handful of planets this massive, and so TOI-332 b presents an interesting challenge to planetary formation theories. We find that photoevaporation cannot account for the mass-loss required to strip this planet of the Jupiter-like envelope it would have been expected to accrete. We need to look towards other scenarios, such as high-eccentricity migration, giant impacts, or gap opening in the protoplanetary disc, to try and explain this unusual discovery.

  • Effect of the 2018 European drought on methane and carbon dioxide exchange of northern mire ecosystems
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B-Biological Sciences. - : The Royal Society. - 0962-8436 .- 1471-2970. ; 375:1810
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We analysed the effect of the 2018 European drought on greenhouse gas (GHG) exchange of five North European mire ecosystems. The low precipitation and high summer temperatures in Fennoscandia led to a lowered water table in the majority of these mires. This lowered both carbon dioxide (CO2) uptake and methane (CH4) emission during 2018, turning three out of the five mires from CO(2)sinks to sources. The calculated radiative forcing showed that the drought-induced changes in GHG fluxes first resulted in a cooling effect lasting 15-50 years, due to the lowered CH(4)emission, which was followed by warming due to the lower CO(2)uptake. This article is part of the theme issue 'Impacts of the 2018 severe drought and heatwave in Europe: from site to continental scale'.

  • High-frequency power loss mechanisms in ultra-thin amorphous ribbons
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials. - : Elsevier B.V.. - 0304-8853 .- 1873-4766. ; 519
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Soft magnetic amorphous materials with ultra-low power loss are highly desirable for high-frequency drive applications. The present work demonstrates the high-frequency power loss performance and underlying loss mechanisms in ultra-thin amorphous alloys. This is achieved by rapid-quenching amorphous alloys of Co-, CoFe- and Fe-rich systems, investigating their amorphous atomic structure, quantifying the saturation magnetostriction constants (λs), imaging magnetic domains at remanent magnetization, analyzing magnetization reversal from various magnetization levels, and finally, investigating the material loss performance over a broad frequency range (f = 50 kHz–2 MHz) at various excitation levels (Bm = 25–100 mT). The ultra-high performance of ultra-thin Co-rich amorphous ribbons, as compared to CoFe- and Fe-rich alloys, was attributed to the significantly low eddy current loss, due to the reduced thickness, and a minimal amount of excess loss, owning to minimal magnetoelastic contributions and magnetization reversal by rotation. The underlying loss mechanisms were analyzed by decomposing material loss into primary components and identifying the magnetization reversal mechanisms using minor hysteresis loops. In the Co-rich amorphous alloys, we suggest that magnetization reversal by rotation dominates, at least at low excitations, while in CoFe- and Fe-rich alloys domain wall displacement prevails and contributes significantly to the excess loss up to the MHz frequency range. Magnetization reversal by rotation in Co-rich alloys could be attributed to the zero/near-zero λs, and eventually low residual stress, leading to a homogeneous magnetic domain structure, as compared to the inhomogeneous “fingerprint-like” complex domains in highly magnetostrictive CoFe-rich alloys.

  • Relationship between cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) concentration and aerosol optical depth in the Arctic region
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Atmospheric Environment. - : Elsevier BV. - 1352-2310 .- 1873-2844. ; 267
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To determine the direct and indirect effects of aerosols on climate, it is important to know the spatial and temporal variations in cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) concentrations. Although many types of CCN measurements are available, extensive CCN measurements are challenging because of the complexity and high operating cost, especially in remote areas. As aerosol optical depth (AOD) can be readily observed by remote sensing, many attempts have been made to estimate CCN concentrations from AOD. In this study, the CCN-AOD relationship is parameterized based on CCN ground measurements from the Zeppelin Observatory (78.91 degrees N, 11.89 degrees E, 474 m asl) in the Arctic region. The AOD measurements were obtained from the Ny-Alesund site (78.923 degrees N, 11.928 degrees E) and Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications, Version 2 reanalysis. Our results show a CCN-AOD correlation with a coefficient of determination R-2 of 0.59. Three additional estimation models for CCN were presented based on the following data: (i) in situ aerosol chemical composition, (ii) in situ aerosol optical properties, and (iii) chemical composition of AOD obtained from reanalysis data. The results from the model using in situ aerosol optical properties reproduced the observed CCN concentration most efficiently, suggesting that the contribution of BC to CCN concentration should be considered along with that of sulfate.

  • Electrokinetic wall effect mechanisms and applications
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: MicroTAS 2020 - 24th International Conference on Miniaturized Systems for Chemistry and Life Sciences. - 9781733419017 ; , s. 42-43
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Under the application of longitudinal electric fields in microchannels, microparticles experience lift forces that push them away from the channel walls and affect their trajectories. At high frequencies (>100KHz) the dielectrophoretic forces dominate and are well understood but at lower frequencies there is little agreement as to the exact nature of the forces, how they are generated and how they vary due to the many different experimental conditions that are used in microfluidics devices. Here we present an experimental study of these mechanisms.
