  • Entertainment as a Complex Form of Communication. Two Examples from Hemsöborna
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Nordic Theatre Studies. - : Det Kgl. Bibliotek/Royal Danish Library. - 0904-6380 .- 2002-3898. ; 28:1, s. 76-86
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An increasing interest in popular culture, entertainment, and leisure studies has resulted in a more thorough discussion of entertainment and its function in everyday life. That entertainment needs to be studied on its own terms, and not just in relation to some other area, is important. Instead of viewing entertainment as merely something connected with enjoyment and pleasure, the article looks at how entertainment renegotiates vital questions and topics from everyday life through its performance practice. Entertainment is used as an enhanced awareness, a de-familiarization, illustrating the function of different norms. The article examines two different scenes from two different productions of August Strindberg’s novel "The People of Hemsö". The first analyses the arrival of an outsider, coming from the mainland to the archipelago. The second underlines the seriousness of gender inequality. Both examples stress the importance of studying how entertainment functions as a specific performance style/practice that re-negotiates the content being communicated.

  • 2019

  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter examines the operetta as part of an intertextual framework and argues that transfers and shifts within this framework are important aspects for understanding the history and the function of the operetta. As primary empirical material, the article uses reviews from Swedish performances of Sidney Jones’ The Geisha, to discuss how an Asian themed operetta was developed and received in Sweden. The article further argues for the importance of studying how reviewers described the The Geisha. There seems to be a recurring theme, or trope, that treats the operetta as something in decline. A problematization of this emphasizes the operetta as part of an intertextual framework, where past, present, and future, becomes part of a dynamic exchange. The chapter also challenges the opposition between operetta and opera by showing how different artistes moved from one genre to another. This opens for a destabilization of the border between operetta as popular culture, and opera as high culture. All of this connects to the aim of the chapter, which is to argue for the importance of including popular culture when revising dominant beliefs about the past.

  • History Repeating Itself. The function of turning points and continuity in three historical narratives on operetta
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Nordic Theatre Studies. - : Det Kgl. Bibliotek/Royal Danish Library. - 0904-6380 .- 2002-3898. ; 29:1, s. 102-116
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article’s primary aim is to discuss the function of turning points and continuity within historiography. That a historical narrative, produced at a certain time and place, influence the way the historian shapes and develops the argument is problematized by an emphasis on the complex relationship between turning points and continuity as colligatory concepts within an argumentative framework. Aided by a number of examples from three historical narratives on operetta, the article stresses the importance of creating new narratives about the past. Two specific examples from the history of operetta, the birth of the genre and the role of music, are used to illustrate the need to revise not only the use of source material and the narrative strategy used, but also how the argument proposed by the historian gathers strength. The interpretation of turning points and continuity as colligatory concepts illustrate the need to revise earlier historical narratives when trying to counteract the repetitiveness of history.

  • Re-valuing Swedish Outdoor Theatre
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Popular Entertainment Studies. - 1837-9303. ; 8:1, s. 74-85
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The modern outdoor theatre in Sweden was created around 1910. A description of outdoor theatre is usually characterized by a governing dichotomy between good theatre of high aesthetic quality versus bad, entertainment of low quality. This article is inspired by a postnarrativist interpretation of historiography when seeking a re-valuation of the historical material regarding outdoor theatre. By mapping and connecting different source materials, outdoor theatre is treated as an important phenomenon challenging earlier historiographical narratives. A juxtaposition of ideas about theatre as education and theatre as entertainment offers an in-depth analysis that emphasises the relationship between outdoor and indoor theatre around the beginning of the 20th century and calls for new ways of studying the intertwined relationship between art and entertainment.
