  • A CNN-based approach to measure wood quality in timber bundle images
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: 2021 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference (I2MTC). - : IEEE. - 9781728195391
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • At present, the Smart Industry is becoming a field of great interest for many worldwide researchers since it allows to experiment and research new advanced techniques. One of the most common explored approaches in operations where image processing has already been a milestone is the use of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN). Those networks have enhanced the current image processing algorithms, achieving an improvement in decision processes usually based on human experience, where an analytical model is not always available. This paper proposes a novel approach for measuring the number of rotted logs in timber bundles using a CNN trained on thousands of timber log images extracted from bundles. Today, the Swedish forest industry bases the selling price of timber bundles on the evaluation of a visual inspection. This operation is based on human experience to evaluate and measure timber bundles' features, which is necessary to categorize them. The proposed approach has shown promising results compared to the actual visual inspection made by operators showing an F1 score with the best CNN architecture of 0.89.

  • A Sound Level Meter featured with automatic estimation of the measurement uncertainty
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Measurement. - : Elsevier BV. - 0263-2241 .- 1873-412X. ; 188
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the area of measuring the environmental noise the equivalent sound pressure level LA,eq is adopted and compared with legal thresholds in order to characterize the site of interest. The paper describes an innovative Sound Level Meter (SLM) able to provide information about the measurand contribution to the measurement uncertainty estimation. This measurement technology is made possible thanks to an approach based on bootstrap method for selecting the suitable measurement episode for an estimation of LAeq. The firmware implementation of the developed SLM is disclosed with reference to a low-cost platform for real-time execution of the proposed methodology. Finally, a metrological characterization of the prototype performed in laboratory is reported as well as the performance comparison with a class 1 SLM in a real scenario. As a result, the smart features of the new SLM may be easily implemented by including commercial devices into the instrument schematics.

  • Cold-stimulated brown adipose tissue activation is related to changes in serum metabolites relevant to NAD + metabolism in humans
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Cell Reports. - 2211-1247. ; 42:9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cold-induced brown adipose tissue (BAT) activation is considered to improve metabolic health. In murine BAT, cold increases the fundamental molecule for mitochondrial function, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+), but limited knowledge of NAD+ metabolism during cold in human BAT metabolism exists. We show that cold increases the serum metabolites of the NAD+ salvage pathway (nicotinamide and 1-methylnicotinamide) in humans. Additionally, individuals with cold-stimulated BAT activation have decreased levels of metabolites from the de novo NAD+ biosynthesis pathway (tryptophan, kynurenine). Serum nicotinamide correlates positively with cold-stimulated BAT activation, whereas tryptophan and kynurenine correlate negatively. Furthermore, the expression of genes involved in NAD+ biosynthesis in BAT is related to markers of metabolic health. Our data indicate that cold increases serum tryptophan conversion to nicotinamide to be further utilized by BAT. We conclude that NAD+ metabolism is activated upon cold in humans and is probably regulated in a coordinated fashion by several tissues.

  • Explorative study on quality of life in relation to salivary secretion rate in head and neck cancer patients treated with radiotherapy up to 2 years post treatment.
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: International journal of dental hygiene. - : Wiley. - 1601-5037 .- 1601-5029. ; 17:1, s. 46-54
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to analyse quality of life (QoL) pretreatment and up to 24months post radiation therapy (RT) in patients with head and neck (H&N) cancer.Twenty-nine patients (19 men and 10 women) with a mean age of 59±8years were included. The stimulated salivary secretion was measured and the patients completed the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life questionnaires (EORTC QLQ-C30 and H&N35) and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale (HADS) pretreatment and at 6, 12 and 24months post RT.At all time-points after RT (6, 12, and 24months), patients with hyposalivation (stimulated secretion rate ≤0.7mL/min) reported clinically significant differences (> 10 points) regarding insomnia, swallowing, social eating, dry mouth, and sticky saliva. Statistically significant differences were found for emotional functioning and insomnia at 12months (P<0.05 for both) and for sticky saliva at both 12 and 24months (P<0.05 and P<0.01). The number of clinically significant differences increased from 10 at both 6 and 12months post-RT to 14 functioning/symptom scales and single items at the 24months follow-up. At 24months post RT, 21% of patients with hyposalivation had HADS scores suggesting anxiety problems compared to 7% for those with stimulated salivary secretion rates >0.7mL/min.Patients with hyposalivation showed deterioration in health related quality of life (QoL) at 24months compared with 12months post RT. Most pronounced were problems with insomnia, swallowing, social eating, dry mouth, and sticky saliva.

  • Leveraging networks, capabilities and opportunities for international success : A study on returnee entrepreneurial ventures
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0956-5221 .- 1873-3387. ; 34:1, s. 51-62
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • By integrating social capital theory with a capability-based view on performance, this paper aims to examine the extent to which returnee entrepreneurial ventures (REVs) gain international performance advantages from the founding entrepreneurs’ experience with international networks. Using data on 200 Chinese REVs, the paper proposes and tests a structural model with a focus on the link between individual entrepreneurs and the subsequent development of firm capabilities. The results provide evidence that it is important that the returnee entrepreneurs have an international social network for the REV to develop an international network capability, which, in turn, mediates the effects on opportunity knowledge and the international performance of the REVs. The findings highlight the concurrent effect of the role of entrepreneurs and organizational learning in internationalization, and they provide an understanding as to the importance of the returnee-specific advantages for the international performance of these firms.

  • Detection of train passages during forced vibration testing of bridge structure using energy harvesting technology
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: The Civil Engineering Research in Ireland 2016 (CERI2016).
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Through integration with civil infrastructure, smart systems have the potential to provide real time health monitoring of the host structure. Such systems can be designed so as to be power independent while, providing such detection, using energy jarvesting technology. The use of piezoelectric energy harvesters are particularly attractive for this purpose. This is due to the dynamics of the host structure being reflected in the power output of such harvesters. It is therefore possible to identify not only the nature of the host, but also the loading to which it is being subjected through the power output. This paper investigates the detection of train passages over a host bridge structure during full scale forced vibration testing using piezoelectric energy harvesters. The use of a shaker unit to subject the bridge to controlled forced vibrations is outlined. The deployment of an energy harvesting device to the bridge during such testing is outlined and its performance analysed. A time domain power output from the harvester during testing is provided and the host characteristics identified. Incident based events were identified from the power output and corresponded with train passages which occured during the forced vibration testing. The potential use of energy harvesters to identify event based incidents are discussed and future applications identified. This paper further establishes the potential applications of energy harvesting technology with civil infrastructure through full scale experimental validation.
