  • Integrating life cycle assessment into simulation-based decision support
  • 2022
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Increasing marketing and legislative requirements put heavy demands on the environmental performance of future transportation solutions. The resulting need to reduce total environmental impacts presents both challenges and opportunities to the transport sector as a whole, including the automotive industry. Life cycle assessment (LCA) is commonly used to evaluate environmental performance in the automotive industry. However, the static nature of LCAlimits its usefulness for capturing dynamic environmental consequences in the manufacturing and operational phase. This thesis proposes a simulation-based approach to LCA that addresses this problem. Selected real-world case studies demonstrate the potential of the approach in both vehicle production processes and end-user applications. The work was preceded by a comprehensive review of the potential benefits and challenges of using simulation-based LCA in production processes. This review laid the foundation for the development and implementation of this method inthe automotive industry. Two real-world case studies demonstrate its value. The first was a waste collection case study in which LCA was integrated in an existing simulation-based decision support tool to optimize the company’s activities froma life cycle environmental impact perspective. A simultaneously developed simulation-based LCA model of an iron foundry production line extended the applicability of the method with a proposed decision support interpretation approach. The study shows that data and information from both simulation model and LCA databases can be integrated and utilized in the developed simulation-based LCA method. This allows different systems with different configurations to be combined to assess the relevant parameters, and eventually to provide information about overall environmental impacts to decision makers to improvethe environmental sustainability of the automotive industry.

  • 2023

  • Applying Life Cycle Assessment to Simulation-Based Decision Support : A Swedish Waste Collection Case Study
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Advances and New Trends in Environmental Informatics. - Cham : Springer. - 9783030308629 - 9783030308612 - 9783030308643 ; , s. 165-178
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A method of integrating life cycle assessment into a simulation-based decision support system has been developed to help decision-makers take environmental impact into account during daily operations. The method was demonstrated in a real-world case study involving eight different trucks, which were selected and maintained by the case company. The trucks used different fuels, namely diesel, biodiesel, vehicle gas, and electricity. Compared to conventional diesel trucks, those using biodiesel emitted 37% less greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Gas trucks reduced GHG emissions by a further 40%. Overall, electric trucks have the lowest emissions. This paper also addresses the development of the methodology for this study. In particular, comparisons are made regarding the selection of different functional units and system activity mapping. Ways of achieving more accurate conclusions in future studies are discussed.

  • What are the effects of implementing patient-controlled admissions in inpatient care? : A study protocol of a large-scale implementation and naturalistic evaluation for adult and adolescent patients with severe psychiatric conditions throughout Region Stockholm
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: BMJ Open. - : BMJ Publishing Group Ltd. - 2044-6055. ; 12:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction Patient-controlled admissions (PCAs) represent a change in psychiatric inpatient care where patients are allowed to decide for themselves when hospitalisation might be required. Prior research has demonstrated that PCA increase the number of admissions, but decrease days in inpatient care, while both the admissions to and days in involuntary care decrease. However, investigations have been restricted to specific patient groups arid have not examined other possible benefits, such as effects on symptoms, quality of life and autonomy. Methods and analysis This study explores the implementation process and effects of PCA in Region Stockholm, who is currently introducing PCA for all patients with severe psychiatric conditions and extensive healthcare utilisation. In total, the study comprises approximately 45 inpatient wards, including child and adolescent psychiatry. In a naturalistic evaluation, patients assigned PCA will be followed up to 36 months, both with regard to hospitalisation rates and self-reported outcomes. In addition, qualitative studies will explore the experiences of patients, caregivers of adolescents and healthcare providers. Ethics and dissemination Approval has been granted by the Swedish Ethical Review Authority (Dnr: 2020-06498). The findings from this study will be disseminated via publications in international peer-reviewed journals, at scientific conferences, as part of two doctoral theses, and through the Swedish Partnership for Mental Health.

  • The effects of information relevancy on driving behavior A simulator study on professional bus drivers
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Cognition Technology & Work. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1435-5558 .- 1435-5566. ; 23, s. 429-437
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Bus driving is a complex and cognitively challenging task that places high demands on bus drivers' working memory. Increasing use of "In-Vehicle Information Systems" leads to driver distraction and is a contributing factor to many road accidents globally, and with systems for tickets, navigation, and timetables, bus drivers are more exposed to this additional workload than other actors in the traffic. This study provides insights into how bus drivers' driving behavior is affected by auditory traffic information through a driving simulator study at the Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute. A pre-study showed that many bus drivers in Gothenburg experience that a majority of the messages they receive are irrelevant to them. Difference in driving behavior was identified for conditions in which the drivers received messages irrelevant to their route, which might indicate that irrelevancy is an important factor for the workload imposed to the drivers. We hypothesize that irrelevant messages require processing in the visuospatial sketchpad, which might increase workload more than just auditory information processing. The results of this study implies that the routines for traffic communication between traffic controllers and bus drivers should be considerate, as to reduce the number of irrelevant messages that are cognitively loading the bus drivers.

  • Enhancing Manual Assembly Training using Mixed Reality and Virtual Sensors
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Procedia CIRP. - : Elsevier. - 2212-8271 .- 2212-8271.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In recent years Mixed Reality technology has been widely used to enhance operators in manual assembly operations. This paper introduces a Mixed Reality environment for assembly operations and describes how the process can be supported by virtual sensors. The structure of the environment allows seamless adaption from a fully virtual training scenario, only using virtual assets, to a full production scenario supporting operators in assembling physical products in actual production. The training system which has been developed together with the company Skandia Elevator in Sweden enables the operators to train with much less disturbance to the real production line compared to training using the actual production equipment. In fact, the training can be done only using virtual assets.

  • Making the Digital Strategy a Bridge Between Industry 4.0 Initiatives and the Business Plan – Reports from Two Case Studies Towards Manufacturing SMEs
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Sustainable Production through Advanced Manufacturing, Intelligent Automation and Work Integrated Learning. - : IOS Press. - 9781643685106 - 9781643685113 ; , s. 628-639
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we discuss the results of two extensive case studies targeted towards Swedish SMMEs, partly aimed at investigating the current state of practice regarding the strategic work in the companies and its alignment to digitalization initiatives. The case studies were conducted during 2022 and 2023 and includes a vast empirical material, including several site visits, more than 30 interviews, several meetings with the managerial boards of the two companies and workshops, as well as studies of strategic document, product portfolios and Gemba walks. The paper presents a suggestion for how to formulate a one-page digital strategy, which aligns the digitalization initiative with the overall strategy of the company, as well as a vision for the digital transformation initiative. In addition, the one-pager also includes prioritized stakeholder groups, expected effects and prioritized activities. Moreover, we also motivate the reasons behind a one-pager, as well as the topics included therein. Finally, we give some ideas for future work, including the importance of implementing the one-pager in more companies, as a way to further validate its applicability and long-term influence on and relevance for the strategic work in SMMEs.

  • Migration background, eating disorder symptoms and healthcare service utilisation : findings from the Stockholm Public Health Cohort
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: BJPsych Open. - : Cambridge University Press. - 2056-4724. ; 9:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: From a global perspective, eating disorders are increasingly common, probably because of societal transformation and improved detection. However, research on the impact of migration on the development of eating disorders is scarce, and previously reported results are conflicting.Aims: To explore if eating disorder symptom prevalence varies according to birth region, parents' birth region and neighbourhood characteristics, and analyse if the observed patterns match the likelihood of being in specialist treatment.Method: This study uses data from a large population-based health survey (N = 47 662) among adults in Stockholm, Sweden. A general linear model for complex samples, including adjustment for gender and age, was used to explore self-reported eating disorder symptoms. Odds ratios were calculated for individual symptoms. Results: Eating disorder symptoms are substantially more common in individuals born abroad, especially for migrants from a non-European country. This holds true for all surveyed symptoms, including restrictive eating (odds ratio 5.5, 95% CI 4.5-6.7), compensatory vomiting (odds ratio 6.1, 95% CI 4.6-8.0), loss-of-control eating (odds ratio 2.6, 95% CI 2.3-3.1) and preoccupation with food (odds ratio 2.3, 95% CI 1.9-2.8). Likewise, symptoms are more common in individuals with both parents born abroad and individuals living in districts with a high percentage of migrant residents. A gap exists between district-level symptom scores and the likelihood of being in specialist eating disorder treatment. Conclusions: These findings call for oversight of current outreach strategies, and highlight the need for efforts to reduce stigma and increase eating disorder symptom recognition in broader groups.

  • Mukbang and Disordered Eating : A Netnographic Analysis of Online Eating Broadcasts
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Culture, Medicine and Psychiatry. - : Springer. - 0165-005X .- 1573-076X. ; 44:4, s. 586-609
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mukbang is a recent Internet phenomenon in which video recordings of hosts eating large amounts of food are streamed on an online video platform. It originated in South Korea around 2014 and has since become a global trend. The aim of this study was to explore how viewers of mukbang videos relate their audience experiences to symptoms of disordered eating. A qualitative analysis of YouTube comments and Reddit posts on the topic of mukbang and disordered eating was performed, employing a netnographic approach. Two overarching themes were identified: a viewer perspective, by which users discuss mukbang without describing any personal involvement, and a participant perspective, by which users describe their own experiences of affects and behaviors in response to watching mukbang. Several topical categories emerged, describing how watching mukbang can both limit and increase eating, reduce loneliness and guilt, and become self-destructive. For some, mukbang appears to be a constructive tool in increasing food intake, preventing binge eating, or reducing loneliness; for others, it is clearly a destructive force that may motivate restrictive eating or trigger a relapse into loss-of-control eating. Notably, watching mukbang is not necessarily experienced as either helpful or destructive, but instead as simultaneously useful and hurtful.
