  • Seeking explanations for recent changes in abundance of wintering Eurasian Wigeon (Anas penelope) in northwest Europe
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Ornis Fennica. - 0030-5685. ; 93:1, s. 12-25
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We analysed annual changes in abundance of Eurasian Wigeon (Anas penelope) derived from mid-winter International Waterbird Census data throughout its northwest European flyway since 1988 using log-linear Poisson regression modelling. Increases in abundance in the north and east of the wintering range (Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Switzerland), stable numbers in the central range (Belgium, Netherlands, UK and France) and declining abundance in the west and south of the wintering range (Spain and Ireland) suggest a shift in wintering distribution consistent with milder winters throughout the range. However, because over 75% of the population of over 1 million individuals winters in Belgium, the Netherlands, UK and France, there was no evidence for a major movement in the centre of gravity of the wintering distribution. Between-winter changes in overall flyway abundance were highly significantly positively correlated (P = 0.003) with reproductive success measured by age ratios in Danish hunter wing surveys and less strongly and inversely correlated (P = 0.05) with mean January temperatures in the centre of the wintering range, suggesting that winter severity may also contribute to influence survival. However, adding winter severity to a model predicting population size based on annual reproductive success alone did not contribute to more effectively modelling the observed changes in population size. Patterns in annual reproductive success seem therefore to largely explain the recent dynamics in population size of northwest European Wigeon. Summer NAO significantly and positively explained 27% of variance in annual breeding success. Other local factors such as eutrophication of breeding sites and changes in predation pressure undoubtedly contribute to changes in the annual production of young and differences in hunting pressure as well as winter severity affect annual survival rates. However, it seems likely that the observed flyway population trend since 1988 has been mostly influenced by climate effects on the breeding grounds affecting reproductive success and marginally on the winter quarters affecting survival. We urge improved demographic monitoring of the population to better assess annual survival and reproductive success. We also recommend development of an adaptive management framework to remove uncertainties in our knowledge of Wigeon population dynamics as information is forthcoming to better inform management, especially to attempt to harmonise the harvest with annual changes in demography to ensure sustainable exploitation of this important quarry species now and in the future.

  • Visceral Prostheses : Somatechnics and Posthuman Embodiment
  • 2022
  • Bok (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the postmodern era, when the interface of bodies, biologies and technologies increasingly challenges the very notion of what counts as human, Margrit Shildrick proposes new understandings of the limits and possible extensions of posthuman embodiment.Focusing on prostheses, Shildrick broadens our understanding of both what prostheses are and what they might mean for human embodiment. As well as rehabilitation devices used by disabled people to replace or augment impaired parts of the body, Shildrick introduces visceral organic prostheses, which involve any cellular material that cannot be identified with the self, from organ transplantation to the physiological processes of microchimerism and the microbiome. Beyond origin narratives that concentrate on 'host' and 'guest' and 'self' and 'other', she examines the transformative possibilities that prostheses offer as they extend the nature of the embodied self beyond genetic singularity.Building on cutting-edge interdisciplinary research in critical disability studies, transplantation studies, and bioscience, Visceral Prostheses argues that bodies with prostheses in whatever form should no longer be understood as irregular forms of normative embodiment, but as limit cases of a common experience. In doing so, it challenges the western understanding of the singular self and welcomes a new understanding of the human.

  • The effectiveness of a web-based psycho-social intervention for family carers of older people : a multicentre pilot study
  • 2016
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • AIMS. The goal of this study was to develop and test a new multilingual web platform for supporting family carers of older people by means of on-line information resources and peer and professional support.METHODS. A convenient sample of family carers was enrolled in three countries (Italy, Germany and Sweden) and could access services for 3 months. 94 family carers used the web platform. Data were collected through questionnaires and focus groups.FINDINGS. Active users were generally satisfied with support (information, advice, counselling) provided by moderators (social workers or psychologists) and peers. Usability and appropriateness were confirmed, although some refinements were suggested and users with low digital skills often needed technical support.CONCLUSIONS. The pilot study confirmed web-based support services can be a useful tool for family carers. Some challenges still exist for implementation in relation to digital skills required and users’ preferences on services at country level.

  • A combined study of source, detector and matter non-standard neutrino interactions at DUNE
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP). - : Springer. - 1126-6708 .- 1029-8479. ; 2016:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We simultaneously investigate source, detector and matter non-standard neutrino interactions at the proposed DUNE experiment. Our analysis is performed using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo exploring the full parameter space. We find that the sensitivity of DUNE to the standard oscillation parameters is worsened due to the presence of non-standard neutrino interactions. In particular, there are degenerate solutions in the leptonic mixing angle θ23 and the Dirac CP-violating phase δ. We also compute the expected sensitivities at DUNE to the non-standard interaction parameters. We find that the sensitivities to the matter non-standard interaction parameters are substantially stronger than the current bounds (up to a factor of about 15). Furthermore, we discuss correlations between the source/detector and matter non-standard interaction parameters and find a degenerate solution in θ23. Finally, we explore the effect of statistics on our results.

  • A halo-independent lower bound on the dark matter capture rate in the Sun from a direct detection signal
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics. - : Institute of Physics Publishing (IOPP). - 1475-7516. ; :05
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We show that a positive signal in a dark matter (DM) direct detection experiment can be used to place a lower bound on the DM capture rate in the Sun, independent of the DM halo. For a given particle physics model and DM mass we obtain a lower bound on the capture rate independent of the local DM density, velocity distribution, galactic escape velocity, as well as the scattering cross section. We illustrate this lower bound on the capture rate by assuming that upcoming direct detection experiments will soon obtain a significant signal. When comparing the lower bound on the capture rate with limits on the high-energy neutrino flux from the Sun from neutrino telescopes, we can place upper limits on the branching fraction of DM annihilation channels leading to neutrinos. With current data from IceCube and Super-Kamiokande non-trivial limits can be obtained for spin-dependent interactions and direct annihilations into neutrinos. In some cases also annihilations into tau tau or bb start getting constrained. For spin-independent interactions current constraints are weak, but they may become interesting for data from future neutrino telescopes.

  • The development is driven by our users not by ourselves-including users in the development of off-the-shelf software
  • 2003
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article describes a non-traditional approach to Participatory Design where distributed users have a serious impact on a software development process. The small software provider makes use of a non-traditional way of Participatory Design combined with an agile development approach. By using for among other things support service, user meetings, courses and news letter they are able to on a daily bases keep in contact with users. Users convey requirements for new functionalities, give feedback and report errors. Users’ feedback and proposals form the base for further development. Frequent re-leases allow the company to quickly implement improvements and bug-fixes. The article relates the observed practices to other research on Participatory Design in unconventional settings and discusses how to expand the Participatory Design toolbox.

  • Estimating the accumulation and transfer of Nodularia spumigena toxins by the blue mussel Mytilus edulis: An appraisal from culture and mesocosm experiments
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Toxicon. - : Elsevier BV. - 0041-0101 .- 1879-3150. ; 48:4, s. 359-372
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Accumulation of Nodularia spumigena toxins by Mytilus edulis was studied during laboratory and mesocosm experiments in order to investigate the possible pathways of nodularin in mussels and calculate toxin budgets. Mussels were exposed to 0.2-15.6 mu g nodularin 1(-1), fed for up to 5 days with Nodularia cells from culture, or blooming in different nutrient-treated seawater. Toxin concentration was monitored with LC-ESI-MS.During different exposures, the amount of nodularin detected in mussels increased linearly with increasing toxin concentration in food and attained 0.28-13.8 mu g of nodularin g dw(-1) of the mussel whole body tissue after 12h. The digestive gland was found to be the tissue with the highest toxin concentration. Nodularin concentration in faeces was not proportional to faeces production or to toxin concentration in food; however, it seemed to be mostly related to food quality as well as to food availability. The percentage of nodularin taken up by the mussels, relative to the amount contained in the offered food, varied from 10% to 20%, depending on food quality. During a 5-day toxin accumulation experiment, the acute reduction of the toxin in mussel tissues the second day and the following stabilization, showed that probably mussels maintain low toxin levels via efficient elimination and/or toxin metabolism. After a 72 h depuration period, mussels showed 75% reduction in their toxin content.

  • Primary care utilization among children with intellectual disabilities transitioning into adulthood
  • 2024
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: One of the most profound transitions in healthcare trajectories is when a person turns 18 years old and transfers from child to adult healthcare. Methods: We included all children and adolescents living in Skåne in 2014 and turning 18 years old during the study period. The ID cohort (n=2 072) comprised those with diagnosis of ID and/or service and support for people with ID, and the general population (gPop) cohort the remaining 73 681 children and adolescents. Information on all healthcare contacts to physicians in public and privately organized primary care during the study period was collected from the Skåne Healthcare Register. For each person, the yearly number of healthcare contacts was calculated and related to the year when the person turned 18 years old. Results: Prior to turning 18, 44-46% of the ID cohort and 44-50% of the gPop cohort had at least one yearly contact with primary care (RR 0.94-1.02, all non-significant). The year of turning 18, the number of people with at least one contact rose to 63% in the ID cohort, whereas it remained at 52% in the gPop cohort. After turning 18, the number with at least one contact decreased from 56% to 24% in the ID cohort and from 42% to 15% in the gPop cohort (RR 1.47-1.88, all significant). Conclusions: The results show a change in healthcare utilization patterns after becoming of age. This implies a need for more in-depth research concerning the underlying mechanisms for transition into adult healthcare.

  • Från gammal man till den gamle mannen : Definitmarkering i fornsvenska nominalfraser med adjektivattribut
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Arkiv för nordisk filologi. - Lund. - 0066-7668. ; 130, s. 101-138
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Modern Swedish uses both a free, pre-adjectival, definite article and a definite suffix on the noun to mark definiteness in noun phrases with adjectival attributes. The combination of two definite morphemes in a single noun phrase is commonly referred to as double definiteness. The definite inflexion of nouns, which applies to all the Scandinavian languages, probably arose around 1000, and the use of nouns in the definite form increases steadily over the following centuries, probably in a similar way all over Scandinavia. Interestingly, however, semantically definite noun phrases with adjectival attributes normally lack all definiteness marking in Old Swedish up to the beginning of the 14th century, which has not been brought to the attention in earlier research. During the latter half of the 14th century, nouns in the definite form could be preceded by adjectives, but only in the so-called weak form. A weakly inflected adjective could in turn be preceded by an article-like word, but a definite article in the strict sense is not developed until the 15th century. Norwegian has also developed double definiteness, but apparently via a different route. Already early Old Norwegian used a true definite article in pre-adjectival position, at first in combination with uninflected nouns, but later with nouns in the definite form.
