  • Sizing of MOS device in LC-tank oscillators

    • Since previous publications show conflicting results about sizing device, relationship between device size and 1/f(2) phase noise is studied and closed-form equations are derived in order to help designers to size devices in LC-tank oscillators for good phase noise performance. The analysis is divided into two steps. Firstly, periodic noise transfer functions of each VCO noise source to the output of switch FETs are derived, and the impact of sizing on these functions is discussed. Secondly, phase noise equations are derived with these functions. Experiments show that phase noise predicted by the equations agrees with that from simulations.

  • Local structure and electronic-spin transition of Fe-bearing MgSiO3 perovskite under conditions of the Earth's lower mantle

    • We report first-principles electronic structure calculations on the structural and electronic-spin behaviours of Fe-bearing MgSiO3 crystals up to the pressure of Earth's mantle. The transition pressure of the Fe-bearing MgSiO3 from the orthorhombic perovskite (OPv) to the orthorhombic post-perovskite (OPPv) phase decreases with increasing Fe concentration. The lattice distortion has impacts on the electronic-spin behaviour of the Fe ions in the PVs. The spin-polarizations of the Fe ions in the (Fe,Mg)SiO3 OPvs and OPPvs keep unchanged up to the pressures in the lower mantle. Meanwhile, the Fe-bearing MgSiO3 OPV Containing Fe-Mg-Fe-Si pairs exhibits multiple-magnetic moments co-existing in a large pressure range (from about 78 to 110 GPa), and finally becomes non-magnetic at pressure higher than 110 GPa. These results provide a mechanism to understand the recent experimental results about Fe valence states and the electronic transitions of the Fe-bearing MgSiO3 under high pressure.

  • Spiro[fluorene-9,9′-xanthene]-Based Hole-Transporting Materials for Photovoltaics : Molecular Design, Structure-Property Relationship, and Applications

    • Organic hole-transporting materials (HTMs) are of importance in the progress of new-generation photovoltaics, notably in perovskite solar cells (PSCs), solid-state dye-sensitized solar cells (sDSCs), and organic solar cells (OSCs). These materials play a vital role in hole collection and transportation, significantly impacting the power conversion efficiency (PCE) and overall stability of photovoltaic devices. The emergence of spiro(fluorene-9,9 '-xanthene) (SFX) as a novel building block for organic HTMs has gained considerable attention in the field of photovoltaics. Its facile one-pot synthetic approach, straightforward purification, and physiochemical properties over the prototype HTM spiro-OMeTAD have positioned SFX as a highly attractive alternative. In this Account, we present a comprehensive and in-depth summary of our research work, focusing on the advancements in SFX-based organic HTMs in photovoltaic devices with a particular emphasis on PSCs and sDSCs. Several key objectives of our research have been focused on exploring strategies to improve the properties of SFX-based HTMs. (i) One of the critical aspects we have addressed is the improvement of film quality. By carefully designing the molecular structure and employing suitable synthetic approaches, we have achieved HTMs with excellent film-forming ability, resulting in uniform and smooth films over large areas. This achievement is pivotal in ensuring the reproducibility and efficiency of photovoltaic devices. Furthermore, (ii) our investigations have led to an improvement in hole mobility within the HTMs. Through molecular engineering, such as increasing the molecular conjugation and introducing multiple SFX units, we have demonstrated enhanced charge-carrier mobility. This advancement plays a crucial role in minimizing charge recombination losses and improving the overall device efficiency. Additionally, (iii) we have explored the concept of defect passivation in SFX-based HTMs. By incorporating Lewis base structures, such as pyridine groups, we have successfully coordinated to Pb2+ in the perovskite layer, resulting in a passivation of surface defects. This defect passivation contributes to better stability and enhanced device performance. Throughout our review, we highlighted the potential and opportunities achieved through these steps. The combination of enhanced film quality, improved hole mobility, and defect passivation resulted in remarkable photovoltaic performance. Our findings have demonstrated promising short-circuit current densities, open-circuit voltages, fill factors, and PCEs, with some HTMs even outperforming the widely used spiro-OMeTAD. We believe that this review will not only provide a better understanding of SFX-based HTMs but also open new avenues for enhancing the performance of organic HTMs in photovoltaic and other organic electronic devices. By providing unique perspectives and exploring different strategies, we aim to inspire ongoing advancements in photovoltaic technologies and organic electronics. Meanwhile, the success of SFX-based HTMs in improving photovoltaic device performance holds great promise for the continued development of efficient and stable photovoltaic devices in the years to come.

  • A Genetic Locus within the FMN1/GREM1 Gene Region Interacts with Body Mass Index in Colorectal Cancer Risk

    • Colorectal cancer risk can be impacted by genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors, including diet and obesity. Gene-environment interactions (G × E) can provide biological insights into the effects of obesity on colorectal cancer risk. Here, we assessed potential genome-wide G × E interactions between body mass index (BMI) and common SNPs for colorectal cancer risk using data from 36,415 colorectal cancer cases and 48,451 controls from three international colorectal cancer consortia (CCFR, CORECT, and GECCO). The G × E tests included the conventional logistic regression using multiplicative terms (one degree of freedom, 1DF test), the two-step EDGE method, and the joint 3DF test, each of which is powerful for detecting G × E interactions under specific conditions. BMI was associated with higher colorectal cancer risk. The two-step approach revealed a statistically significant G×BMI interaction located within the Formin 1/Gremlin 1 (FMN1/GREM1) gene region (rs58349661). This SNP was also identified by the 3DF test, with a suggestive statistical significance in the 1DF test. Among participants with the CC genotype of rs58349661, overweight and obesity categories were associated with higher colorectal cancer risk, whereas null associations were observed across BMI categories in those with the TT genotype. Using data from three large international consortia, this study discovered a locus in the FMN1/GREM1 gene region that interacts with BMI on the association with colorectal cancer risk. Further studies should examine the potential mechanisms through which this locus modifies the etiologic link between obesity and colorectal cancer.SIGNIFICANCE: This gene-environment interaction analysis revealed a genetic locus in FMN1/GREM1 that interacts with body mass index in colorectal cancer risk, suggesting potential implications for precision prevention strategies.

    • Primary liver tumours have a high incidence and mortality. The most important forms are hepatocellular carcinoma and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma, both can occur together in the mixed phenotype hepatocellular-cholangiocarcinoma. Liver progenitor cells (LPCs) are bipotential stem cells activated in case of severe liver damage and are capable of forming both cholangiocytes and hepatocytes. Possibly, alterations in Wnt, transforming growth factor-, Notch and hypoxia pathways in these LPCs can cause them to give rise to cancer stem cells, capable of driving tumourigenesis. In this review, we summarize and discuss current knowledge on the role of these pathways in LPC activation and differentiation during hepatocarcinogenesis.

  • Increased fitness of a key appendicularian zooplankton species under warmer, acidified seawater conditions

    • Ocean warming and acidification (OA) may alter the fitness of species in marine pelagic ecosystems through community effects or direct physiological impacts. We used the zooplanktonic appendicularian, Oikopleura dioica, to assess temperature and pH effects at mesocosm and microcosm scales. In mesocosms, both OA and warming positively impacted O. dioica abundance over successive generations. In microcosms, the positive impact of OA, was observed to result from increased fecundity. In contrast, increased pH, observed for example during phytoplankton blooms, reduced fecundity. Oocyte fertility and juvenile development were equivalent under all pH conditions, indicating that the positive effect of lower pH on O. dioica abundance was principally due to increased egg number. This effect was influenced by food quantity and quality, supporting possible improved digestion and assimilation at lowered pH. Higher temperature resulted in more rapid growth, faster maturation and earlier reproduction. Thus, increased temperature and reduced pH had significant positive impacts on O. dioica fitness through increased fecundity and shortened generation time, suggesting that predicted future ocean conditions may favour this zooplankton species. © 2018 Bouquet et al.   • Optimization of Curing Behavior of Si3N4 UV Resin for Photopolymerization 3D Printing

    • Silicon nitride (Si3N4) ceramics are widely used in mechanical and thermal management applications due to their excellent properties. To overcome the difficulties in traditional Si3N4 ceramic forming techniques, it is interesting to see the possibility of making complex-shaped silicon nitride ceramic component with novel 3D printing methods. In this study, we aim to study the effect of photo-initiators on the curing behavior of pre-formulated Si3N4 ceramic UV resin suspension. To elucidate the potential multi-factor interactions, a statistic experiment design was implemented in a sequence of screening and optimization by using Modde software. It was found that the kinds of photo-initiators, total amount of initiators and the mixture ratio between initiators have a great influence on the curing properties of silicon nitride UV ceramic resin. Based on these results, a formula was selected based on the criterion of using least amount photo-initiator while reaching the highest curing thickness.

  • Survival of habitable planets in unstable planetary systems

    • Many observed giant planets lie on eccentric orbits. Such orbits could be the result of strong scatterings with other giant planets. The same dynamical instability that produces giant planet scatterings can also alter the orbits of terrestrial planets. For example, a habitable rocky planet in the system can be ejected or transported to an orbit outside the habitable zone. Therefore, there is a link between observed giant planets and the habitability of smaller planets in the system. We say that a habitable planet has resilient habitability if it is able to avoid ejections and collisions and its orbit remains inside the habitable zone. Here we model the orbital evolution of rocky planets in planetary systems where giant planets become dynamically unstable. We measure the resilience of habitable planets as a function of the observed, present-day masses and orbits of the giant planets. We find that the survival rate of habitable planets depends strongly on the giant planet architecture. Systems with three Jupiters (3J) are far more destructive than systems with four giant planets of unequal masses (4G), akin to the architecture of the solar system. In terms of observables, we find that giant planets with eccentricity above 0.4 originate only in 3J systems and very rarely have habitable interior planets. For a giant planet with an present-day eccentricity of 0.2 and semimajor axis of 5 AU orbiting a Sun-like star, 50% of the orbits in the habitable zone are resilient to the instability. As semimajor axis increases and eccentricity decreases, a higher fraction of habitable planets survive and remain habitable. However, if the habitable planet has rocky siblings, there is a significant risk of rocky planet collisions that would sterilize the planet.

  • Microsurgical Salvage of Acute Lower Limb Ischemia after Iatrogenic Femoral Injury during Orthopedic Surgery in a Pediatric Patient

    • Acute lower limb ischemia (ALLI) in the pediatric population is rare but may lead to limb loss and life-long complications. We report the technique and outcomes of microsurgical salvage of ALLI in a preterm newborn after open reduction of congenital hip dysplasia. A 2-month-old girl was born premature at week 36 with congenital bilateral hip dysplasia. The initial management attempted was conservative and entailed placement of bilateral Von Rosen splints. The treatment was successful on the left side, but the patient had recurrent unstable hip dislocation on the right side. Subsequently, 2 attempts at close reduction under general anesthesia were done and both were unsuccessful in maintaining the right hip in the acetabulum. Therefore, an open reduction of the right hip was planned through a medial/obturator approach. During the surgical procedure, the neurovascular femoral bundle (including the superficial femoral artery [SFA], femoral vein [FV], and femoral nerve) was accidently transected with subsequent development of ALLI. Therefore, the FV was harvested distally to the injury site and a 4-cm long healthy segment was obtained. It was reversed, flushed with heparin, spatulated at both extremities, and interposed to the SFA in end-to-end fashion using two 9/0 polypropylene interrupted sutures under microscope. Reperfusion of the limb was noted immediately after releasing the vascular clamps. The final ischemia time at completion of the surgical procedure was 6 hr. Thereby, prophylactic 4-compartment fasciotomies were performed in the right leg. The patient tolerated the procedure well and the postoperative clinical course was free from adverse events. Duplex ultrasound examination at 6 weeks after the intervention confirmed sustained clinical success and showed no signs of venous thromboembolism. At the same time, X-ray examination of the right hip confirmed adequate and stable reduction of the joint in the acetabulum. ALLI due to accidental arterial injury during orthopedic surgical procedures for congenital defects in newborns is a rare but potentially devastating complication. Microsurgical salvage is a safe, feasible, and effective option to restore limb flow. Multidisciplinary expertise and meticulous technique are mandatory in order to achieve satisfactory and durable outcomes.
