  • Sleep duration and daytime napping in relation to incident inflammatory bowel disease : a prospective cohort study
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0269-2813 .- 1365-2036. ; 57:5, s. 475-485
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Sleep dysregulation has been linked to gastrointestinal dysfunction and inflammation.AIMS: To explore the associations between sleep duration, daytime napping and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC).METHODS: Exposure information was obtained from the baseline questionnaire. Sleep duration was coded as continuous and categorical (≤5, 6, 7, 8, ≥9 h/day) variables. Daytime napping was defined as yes (sometimes/usually) and no (never/rarely). Incident IBD cases were defined from primary care and hospital inpatient records. Polygenic risk scores (PRS) for the outcomes were constructed and categorised into low, intermediate and high risk. Hazard ratio (HR) and confidence interval (CI) were estimated using Cox proportional hazard regression.RESULTS: The analysis included 2604 incident IBD cases (806 CD and 1798 UC) with a median follow-up of 12.0 years. Comparing sleep duration ≤5 with 7 h/day, the HR of IBD, CD and UC was 1.36 (95% CI, 1.17-1.59), 1.53 (95% CI, 1.17-2.00) and 1.29 (95% CI, 1.07-1.56), respectively. Comparing participants with and without daytime napping, the HR of IBD, CD and UC was 1.13 (95% CI, 1.05-1.23), 1.25 (95% CI, 1.08-1.44) and 1.09 (95% CI, 0.90-1.20), respectively. No interaction of sleep duration and daytime napping with PRS was detected.  However, the associations appeared stronger in individuals with high rather than low PRS.CONCLUSIONS: This study reveals positive associations between short sleep duration and daytime napping and IBD risk.

  • PHANGS–JWST First Results : Stellar-feedback-driven Excitation and Dissociation of Molecular Gas in the Starburst Ring of NGC 1365?
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal Letters. - : American Astronomical Society. - 2041-8205 .- 2041-8213. ; 944:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We compare embedded young massive star clusters (YMCs) to (sub-)millimeter line observations tracing the excitation and dissociation of molecular gas in the starburst ring of NGC 1365. This galaxy hosts one of the strongest nuclear starbursts and richest populations of YMCs within 20 Mpc. Here we combine near-/mid-IR PHANGS–JWST imaging with new Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array multi-J CO (1–0, 2–1 and 4–3) and [C ı] (1–0) mapping, which we use to trace CO excitation via R42 = ICO(4−3)/ICO(2−1) and R21 = ICO(2−1)/ICO(1−0) and dissociation via RCICO = I[CI](1−0)/ICO(2−1) at 330 pc resolution. We find that the gas flowing into the starburst ring from northeast to southwest appears strongly affected by stellar feedback, showing decreased excitation (lower R42) and increased signatures of dissociation (higher RCICO) in the downstream regions. There, radiative-transfer modeling suggests that the molecular gas density decreases and temperature and [CI/CO] abundance ratio increase. We compare R42 and RCICO with local conditions across the regions and find that both correlate with near-IR 2 μm emission tracing the YMCs and with both polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (11.3 μm) and dust continuum (21 μm) emission. In general, RCICO exhibits ∼0.1 dex tighter correlations than R42, suggesting C ı to be a more sensitive tracer of changing physical conditions in the NGC 1365 starburst than CO (4–3). Our results are consistent with a scenario where gas flows into the two arm regions along the bar, becomes condensed/shocked, forms YMCs, and then these YMCs heat and dissociate the gas.

  • Resolved Kennicutt-Schmidt law in two strongly lensed star-forming galaxies at redshift 1
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 678
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study the star formation rate (SFR) vs. molecular gas mass ( M-mol) scaling relation from hundreds to thousands of parsec in two strongly lensed galaxies at redshift z similar to 1, the Cosmic Snake and A521. We trace the SFR using extinction-corrected restframe UV observations with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), and M-mol using detections of the CO(4-3) line with the Atacama Large Millimeter /submillimeter Array (ALMA). The similar angular resolutions of our HST and ALMA observations of 0:15 0:2 combined with magnifications reaching mu > 20 enable us to resolve structures in the galaxies of sizes lower than 100 pc. These resolutions are close to those of studies of nearby galaxies. This allows us to investigate for the first time the Kennicutt-Schmidt (KS) law (SFR-M-mol surface densities) at di fferent spatial scales, from galactic scales to similar to 100 pc scales, in galaxies at z similar to 1. At integrated scales we find that both galaxies satisfy the KS law defined by galaxies at redshifts between 1 and 2.5. We test the resolved KS (rKS) law in cells of sizes down to 200 pc in the two galaxies. We observe that this relationship generally holds in these z similar to 1 galaxies, although its scatter increases significantly with decreasing spatial scales. We check the scale dependence of the spatial correlation between the surface densities of SFR and M-mol by focusing on apertures centred on individual star-forming regions and molecular clouds. We conclude that star-forming regions and molecular clouds become spatially de-correlated at less than or similar to 1 kpc in the Cosmic Snake, whereas they appear de-correlated at all spatial scales (from 400 pc to 6 kpc) in A521.

  • PHANGS-JWST First Results : Rapid Evolution of Star Formation in the Central Molecular Gas Ring of NGC 1365
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal Letters. - : American Astronomical Society. - 2041-8205 .- 2041-8213. ; 944:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Large-scale bars can fuel galaxy centers with molecular gas, often leading to the development of dense ringlike structures where intense star formation occurs, forming a very different environment compared to galactic disks. We pair ∼0.″3 (30 pc) resolution new JWST/MIRI imaging with archival ALMA CO(2-1) mapping of the central ∼5 kpc of the nearby barred spiral galaxy NGC 1365 to investigate the physical mechanisms responsible for this extreme star formation. The molecular gas morphology is resolved into two well-known bright bar lanes that surround a smooth dynamically cold gas disk (R gal ∼ 475 pc) reminiscent of non-star-forming disks in early-type galaxies and likely fed by gas inflow triggered by stellar feedback in the lanes. The lanes host a large number of JWST-identified massive young star clusters. We find some evidence for temporal star formation evolution along the ring. The complex kinematics in the gas lanes reveal strong streaming motions and may be consistent with convergence of gas streamlines expected there. Indeed, the extreme line widths are found to be the result of inter-“cloud” motion between gas peaks; ScousePy decomposition reveals multiple components with line widths of 〈σ CO,scouse〉 ≈ 19 km s−1 and surface densities of 〈 Σ H 2 , scouse 〉 ≈ 800 M ⊙ pc − 2 , similar to the properties observed throughout the rest of the central molecular gas structure. Tailored hydrodynamical simulations exhibit many of the observed properties and imply that the observed structures are transient and highly time-variable. From our study of NGC 1365, we conclude that it is predominantly the high gas inflow triggered by the bar that is setting the star formation in its CMZ.

  • Characterizing prostate cancer risk through multi-ancestry genome-wide discovery of 187 novel risk variants
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nature Genetics. - : Springer Nature. - 1061-4036 .- 1546-1718. ; 55:12, s. 2065-2074
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The transferability and clinical value of genetic risk scores (GRSs) across populations remain limited due to an imbalance in genetic studies across ancestrally diverse populations. Here we conducted a multi-ancestry genome-wide association study of 156,319 prostate cancer cases and 788,443 controls of European, African, Asian and Hispanic men, reflecting a 57% increase in the number of non-European cases over previous prostate cancer genome-wide association studies. We identified 187 novel risk variants for prostate cancer, increasing the total number of risk variants to 451. An externally replicated multi-ancestry GRS was associated with risk that ranged from 1.8 (per standard deviation) in African ancestry men to 2.2 in European ancestry men. The GRS was associated with a greater risk of aggressive versus non-aggressive disease in men of African ancestry (P = 0.03). Our study presents novel prostate cancer susceptibility loci and a GRS with effective risk stratification across ancestry groups.

  • Integrated opposite charge grafting induced ionic-junction fiber
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - : NATURE PORTFOLIO. - 2041-1723. ; 14:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The emergence of ionic-junction devices has attracted growing interests due to the potential of serving as signal transmission and translation media between electronic devices and biological systems using ions. Among them, fiber-shaped iontronics possesses a great advantage in implantable applications owing to the unique one-dimensional geometry. However, fabricating stable ionic-junction on curved surfaces remains a challenge. Here, we developed a polyelectrolyte based ionic-junction fiber via an integrated opposite charge grafting method capable of large-scale continuous fabrication. The ionic-junction fibers can be integrated into functions such as ionic diodes and ionic bipolar junction transistors, where rectification and switching of input signals are implemented. Moreover, synaptic functionality has also been demonstrated by utilizing the fiber memory capacitance. The connection between the ionic-junction fiber and sciatic nerves of the mouse simulating end-to-side anastomosis is further performed to realize effective nerve signal conduction, verifying the capability for next-generation artificial neural pathways in implantable bioelectronics. Ionic-junction devices are difficult to integrate with fiber-shaped tissues like nerves and muscles for applications in implantable bioelectronics due to their large size and bulk structure. Authors realize here easy to implant fiber-shaped iontronics through an integrated opposite charge grafting process, enabling the construction of ionic logic gates and artificial neural pathways.
