    • Two-dimensional (2D) metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have become a hot topic recently due to their high surface area, larger number of exposed active sites, and improved conductivity. Combining different 2D MOFs could introduce new physical and chemical properties. Here, we have synthesized a heteroepitaxially grown 2D zeolitic imidazolate framework with a leaf-like morphology (ZIF-L). ZIF-L has a layer-by-layer dense structure, which possesses a high content of N and metal ions as active sites. ZIF-L-Co is heteroepitaxially grown on ZIF-L-Zn, while ZIF-L-Zn@ZIF-Co has been successfully prepared. After pyrolysis, the heteroepitaxially grown MOF derived ultra-small Co nanoparticle immobilized nitrogen doped carbon (NC) material (HM-Co@NC) exhibits superior oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity (Eonset = 0.998 V, E1/2 = 0.905 V) and better stability than Pt/C, achieving well-qualified assemblies for use in rechargeable Zn–air batteries.

  • The Seventh Visual Object Tracking VOT2019 Challenge Results

    • The Visual Object Tracking challenge VOT2019 is the seventh annual tracker benchmarking activity organized by the VOT initiative. Results of 81 trackers are presented; many are state-of-the-art trackers published at major computer vision conferences or in journals in the recent years. The evaluation included the standard VOT and other popular methodologies for short-term tracking analysis as well as the standard VOT methodology for long-term tracking analysis. The VOT2019 challenge was composed of five challenges focusing on different tracking domains: (i) VOT-ST2019 challenge focused on short-term tracking in RGB, (ii) VOT-RT2019 challenge focused on "real-time" short-term tracking in RGB, (iii) VOT-LT2019 focused on long-term tracking namely coping with target disappearance and reappearance. Two new challenges have been introduced: (iv) VOT-RGBT2019 challenge focused on short-term tracking in RGB and thermal imagery and (v) VOT-RGBD2019 challenge focused on long-term tracking in RGB and depth imagery. The VOT-ST2019, VOT-RT2019 and VOT-LT2019 datasets were refreshed while new datasets were introduced for VOT-RGBT2019 and VOT-RGBD2019. The VOT toolkit has been updated to support both standard short-term, long-term tracking and tracking with multi-channel imagery. Performance of the tested trackers typically by far exceeds standard baselines. The source code for most of the trackers is publicly available from the VOT page. The dataset, the evaluation kit and the results are publicly available at the challenge website(1).

  • Boride-derived oxygen-evolution catalysts

    • Metal borides/borates have been considered promising as oxygen evolution reaction catalysts; however, to date, there is a dearth of evidence of long-term stability at practical current densities. Here we report a phase composition modulation approach to fabricate effective borides/borates-based catalysts. We find that metal borides in-situ formed metal borates are responsible for their high activity. This knowledge prompts us to synthesize NiFe-Boride, and to use it as a templating precursor to form an active NiFe-Borate catalyst. This boride-derived oxide catalyzes oxygen evolution with an overpotential of 167 mV at 10 mA/cm2 in 1 M KOH electrolyte and requires a record-low overpotential of 460 mV to maintain water splitting performance for over 400 h at current density of 1 A/cm2. We couple the catalyst with CO reduction in an alkaline membrane electrode assembly electrolyser, reporting stable C2H4 electrosynthesis at current density 200 mA/cm2 for over 80 h.

  • Energy-Efficient and Safe-Separation Operation for Successive Trains

    • Energy-efficient and safe-separation during train operation is of great significance for urban rail transit systems, particularly on lines with high traffic density. This paper integrates the two issues and proposes a general cooperative operation method for successive trains with no limit on the number of trains. The cooperation problem is formulated as an optimal control problem and then solved as a nonlinear program. By simultaneously optimizing the speed profiles of each train, the total traction energy of the multi-train system can be minimized, ensuring safety by imposing dynamic time headway constraints among adjacent trains throughout the entire distance horizon. Moreover, a dynamic programming method is developed for comparative study, to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • Temperature-dependent electronic properties of inorganic-organic hybrid halide perovskite (CH3NH3PbBr3) single crystal

    • In this paper, the temperature-dependent electronic properties of inorganic-organic hybrid halide perovskite (CH3NH3PbBr3) single crystals are investigated. The dynamic current-time measurement results at different temperatures directly demonstrate that the electrical properties of the perovskite single crystal are dependent on the work temperature. We find that the Poole-Frankel conduction mechanism fits the current-voltage curves at small bias voltage (0-1 V) under darkness, which is mainly attributed to the surface defect states. The capability of carriers de-trapping from defects varies with different work temperatures, resulting in an increased current as the temperature increases under both darkness and illumination. In addition, the different transient photocurrent responses of incident light at two wavelengths (470 nm, 550 nm) further confirm the existence of defect states on the single crystal surface.     • Nanoscale metal–organic frameworks (nMOFs) have shown tremendous potential in cancer therapy and biomedical imaging. However, their small dimensions present a significant challenge in structure determination by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. We report here the structural determination of nMOFs by rotation electron diffraction (RED). Two isostructural Zr- and Hf-based nMOFs with linear biphenyldicarboxylate (BPDC) or bipyridinedicarboxylate (BPYDC) linkers are stable under intense electron beams to allow the collection of high-quality RED data, which reveal a MOF structure with M12(μ3-O)8(μ3-OH)8(μ2-OH)6 (M = Zr, Hf) secondary building units (SBUs). The nMOF structures differ significantly from their UiO bulk counterparts with M6(μ3-O)4(μ3-OH)4 SBUs and provide the foundation for clarifying the structures of a series of previously reported nMOFs with significant potential in cancer therapy and biological imaging. Our work clearly demonstrates the power of RED in determining nMOF structures and elucidating the formation mechanism of distinct nMOF morphologies.

  • Effect of gas distributor on gas–liquid dispersion and mass transfer characteristics in stirred tank

    • Aiming at the fact that the function of gas distributor is often neglected in the case of high viscosity conditions, a novel spherical micro-orifice gas distributor was proposed and investigated experimentally in water system and non-Newtonian viscous system, respectively. The comparisons of gas–liquid dispersion and mass transfer performance between novel spherical micro-orifice gas distributor and traditional ring distributor were also done. Furthermore, the effects of gas distributors on the gas–liquid dispersion and mass transfer characteristics of three wide-viscosity-range impellers including LDB impeller, FZ impeller and MB impeller were also researched, and an impeller-distributor configuration with good gas–liquid dispersion and mass transfer performance was achieved. The results show that, compared with ring gas distributor, the bubbles dispersed by novel spherical micro-orifice gas distributor are smaller, and the gas holdup and volumetric mass transfer coefficient are relatively higher under the same power consumption per unit volume. Meanwhile, the significant effect of gas distributor geometry on gas dispersion was found for high-viscosity liquid, but not relevant for low-viscosity batches. In addition, compared with other impeller-distributor configurations, the configuration consisting of FZ impeller and novel spherical micro-orifice gas distributor can achieve greater global gas holdup and higher oxygen mass transfer rate, which is recommended especially in viscous system with high gas flow rate. The research is beneficial to promote the application of novel spherical micro-orifice gas distributor in stirred tanks.

    • An experimental investigation into the micromixing performance of coaxial mixers in a viscous system is reported, in which the iodide-iodate reaction system is chosen to quantitatively characterize the product distributions. The effects of feeding time, feeding position, impeller speed, inner impeller configuration, and operation mode on the segregation index, Xs, are examined. It is revealed that the feeding near the inner impeller benefits micromixing and should be regarded as the preferred position. The presence of the rotating outer impeller causes the micromixing performance of the coaxial mixer to be significantly better than the single-shaft mixer. While an increase in the outer impeller speed has a limited influence on micromixing, the inner impeller speed is the dominant influencing factor, that is, the Xs decreases obviously when the inner impeller speed is increased. On the other hand, the coaxial mixers with multiple and axial inner impellers have a better micromixing performance at the same specific power consumption, PV, than that with single and radial inner impellers. Among the configurations consisting of a Rushton impeller (RT), six-straight-blade turbine impeller (SBT), and six-pitched (45°)-blade turbine impeller (PBT), the Xs of the coaxial mixer is always the smallest at the same PV when the PBT + RT configuration is used as the inner impeller. In addition, it is found that the difference in Xs that results from various operation modes is small in terms of power consumption; however, the co-rotation mode is still recommended for the micromixing of the coaxial mixer due to its excellent performance in general.
