  • Combining New and Old Viewing Practices Uses and Experiences of the Transmedia Series “Skam”
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Nordicom Review. - : Walter de Gruyter GmbH. - 1403-1108 .- 2001-5119. ; 39:2, s. 63-78
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In 2015, the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK) released a new youth series, Skam, which was acclaimed for its accurate portrayal of Norwegian teenagers but, above all, for its distribution as a transmedia narrative spreading content across several platforms. Through focus-group interviews, this article investigates how Swedish Skam viewers took part in the content and perceived the role and relation between the platforms. While the interviewees followed Skam in different ways, they nevertheless accepted and appreciated the transmedia format. While they argued that the core content needed to be video based, other content was also seen as a natural part of the series and essential in building the narrative. Furthermore, the idea of contemporary media consumption as being less constrained by time and space was partly contradicted. Especially real-time content and discussions with peers motivated the participants to abide by a new kind of TV schedule, reminiscent of TV viewing practices of the past.

  • Young people’s experiences of political membership: from political parties to Facebook groups
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Information, Communication and Society. - 1369-118X .- 1468-4462. ; 22:2, s. 155-171
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • © 2017 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group In contemporary democracies, citizens’ political memberships are undergoing significant changes. Particularly young people are described as being less interested in long-term commitments in conventional political collectives, instead preferring to engage in cause-oriented activism in loosely organised groups, often sustained by online media. However, behind these general trends, there is a diversity of collective activities, where people are typically part of several ones. The shifting forms of memberships have rarely been investigated as such from the perspective of young citizens. Using a qualitative multi-method approach, this article investigates how young people with an interest in civic and political issues experience and reflect upon their involvements in various collectives. The analysis focuses on two aspects: the explorations that characterise the participants’ political memberships, and the meanings and motives of joining political collectives. On the whole, the participants’ involvement can be described as shifting and tentative. This can be related to the idea of adolescence as a formative period of life, where explorations of memberships constitute important processes in young people’s development of values, beliefs and identities. As for meanings and motives, three themes were found to be central: perceived efficacy, self-identity and peer relationships. The study suggests that political membership is multidimensional and usefully analysed as a process rather than a dichotomous category. As such, it involves explorations and changes over time. The study highlights the reflexive dimensions of membership, where affiliations to collectives is something that youth try out, work on, account for and reconsider in relation to their self-identities.

  • Framing the Swedish #metoo movement
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Nordmedia 2019.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The #metoo movement’s aim was to create awareness of and show how widespread and systematic sexual harassment is in working life. The movement received much attention in Swedish news media, especially in the initial phase between October and December 2017 (Eklund, 2018). However, we know less of what the reports looked like. Using quantitative content analysis, this papers investigates how Swedish news media reported on the metoo-movement in its initial phase, focusing specifically on what contexts and focus dominated (individual, extra-ordinary cases, or collective petitions of ordinary women), and whether the issues were framed as episodic or thematic.

  • ‘It’s only a pastime, really’: Young people’s experiences of social media as a source of news about public affairs
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Social media + Society. - : SAGE Publications. - 2056-3051. ; 1:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Western democracies have seen a decreased participation in activities traditionally associated with political participation. One aspect of participating politically is to keep up-to-date with what happens in society, for example, by following the news. Here, youth have been found to be less active than older generations. The decline in young people’s consumption of news media does not necessarily mean that they are disinterested in news or politics; they may get their information from other sources, for example, social media. Using a qualitative multi-method approach, this article investigates how young people who are interested in civic and political issues, and who regularly access news from various sources, experience and understand, specifically, Facebook and Twitter as sources of news about public affairs. The participants appreciated the immediateness of social media news, and felt that it could provide insights into new perspectives and make news stories feel more relevant. However, it was also experienced as one-sided, fragmented, and subjective, giving a biased, or even false, image of what happens in society. The consumption of news was strongly related to the idea of being a “good” citizen. However, since the participants did not regard social media news as “real news,” their image of themselves as citizens suffered. If young people in general resemble our participants in this respect, research that asks about their news consumption runs a risk of getting answers that underestimate it, thus reinforcing the idea that young people are less interested and informed about public affairs than is actually the case.
