  • A Comparative Study of the Initial Corrosion of KCl and PbCl2 on a Low-Alloyed Steel
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Oxidation of Metals. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1573-4889 .- 0030-770X. ; 87:5-6, s. 779-787
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Heat exchange surfaces in biomass- and waste-fired boilers are exposed to corrosive species due to the considerable amounts of alkali chlorides and PbCl2 which are released during combustion. The corrosivity of alkali chlorides toward superheater alloys exposed at high temperature has been studied extensively. However, at lower material temperatures, i.e., at waterwall conditions, considerably less research has been performed. In order to investigate the effect of small amounts of KCl and PbCl2 during the initial stages of the corrosion attack, a Fe–2.25Cr–1Mo steel was exposed for 24 h in an atmospheres consisting of O2 + H2O + N2 at 400 °C. Both KCl and PbCl2 resulted in an increased corrosion rate compared to the reference. The aim of the present paper is to investigate the influence of KCl and PbCl2 on the initial oxidation of a Fe–2.25Cr–1Mo steel. The work involves a detailed microstructural investigation as well as thermodynamic equilibrium calculations.

  • Overview of the JET preparation for deuterium-tritium operation with the ITER like-wall
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Fusion. - : IOP Publishing. - 1741-4326 .- 0029-5515. ; 59:11
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • For the past several years, the JET scientific programme (Pamela et al 2007 Fusion Eng. Des. 82 590) has been engaged in a multi-campaign effort, including experiments in D, H and T, leading up to 2020 and the first experiments with 50%/50% D-T mixtures since 1997 and the first ever D-T plasmas with the ITER mix of plasma-facing component materials. For this purpose, a concerted physics and technology programme was launched with a view to prepare the D-T campaign (DTE2). This paper addresses the key elements developed by the JET programme directly contributing to the D-T preparation. This intense preparation includes the review of the physics basis for the D-T operational scenarios, including the fusion power predictions through first principle and integrated modelling, and the impact of isotopes in the operation and physics of D-T plasmas (thermal and particle transport, high confinement mode (H-mode) access, Be and W erosion, fuel recovery, etc). This effort also requires improving several aspects of plasma operation for DTE2, such as real time control schemes, heat load control, disruption avoidance and a mitigation system (including the installation of a new shattered pellet injector), novel ion cyclotron resonance heating schemes (such as the three-ions scheme), new diagnostics (neutron camera and spectrometer, active Alfven eigenmode antennas, neutral gauges, radiation hard imaging systems...) and the calibration of the JET neutron diagnostics at 14 MeV for accurate fusion power measurement. The active preparation of JET for the 2020 D-T campaign provides an incomparable source of information and a basis for the future D-T operation of ITER, and it is also foreseen that a large number of key physics issues will be addressed in support of burning plasmas.

  • A Laboratory Study of the in Situ Sulfation of Alkali Chloride Rich Deposits: Corrosion Perspective
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Energy & Fuels. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1520-5029 .- 0887-0624. ; 30:9, s. 7256-7267
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The initial corrosive effect of small (1.35 mu mol/cm(2)) and large (13.5 mu mol/cm(2)) amounts of KCl on 304L has been investigated. The investigations were performed in both the absence and presence of 300 ppm of SO2 at 600 degrees C. The results showed that in the absence of SO2 KCl accelerates the rate of corrosion by means of two types of corrosion attack: a general attack and a steel grain boundary attack. The general attack has been proved to be initiated by K2CrO4 formation. Meanwhile, the steel grain boundary attack is suggested to be accelerated by HCl released due to the chromate formation which increased with higher amounts of KCl. The presence of KCl and SO2 resulted in the simultaneous formation of K2SO4 and K2CrO4. The chromate formation resulted in a general corrosion attack. However, the oxide growth was significantly reduced due to the very fast sulfation reaction. In contrast, the steel grain boundary attack increased in the presence of SO2. It is suggested that the attack is accelerated by HCl released from the sulfation reaction and by sulfidation of the steel grain boundaries.

  • A Case Study of Offshore Advection of Boundary Layer Rolls over a Stably Stratified Sea Surface
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Advances in Meteorology. - : Hindawi Limited. - 1687-9309 .- 1687-9317. ; 2017
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Streaky structures of narrow (8-9 km) high wind belts have been observed from SAR images above the Baltic Sea during stably stratified conditions with offshore winds from the southern parts of Sweden. Case studies using the WRF model and in situ aircraft observations indicate that the streaks originate from boundary layer rolls generated over the convective air above Swedish mainland, also supported by visual satellite images showing the typical signature cloud streets. The simulations indicate that the rolls are advected and maintained at least 30-80 km off the coast, in agreement with the streaks observed by the SAR images. During evening when the convective conditions over land diminish, the streaky structures over the sea are still seen in the horizontal wind field; however, the vertical component is close to zero. Thus advected feature from a land surface can affect the wind field considerably for long times and over large areas in coastal regions. Although boundary layer rolls are a well-studied feature, no previous study has presented results concerning their persistence during situations with advection to a strongly stratified boundary layer. Such conditions are commonly encountered during spring in coastal regions at high latitudes.

  • Orsakande, tillräknande och luftstrupstransplantationer
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Svensk Juristtidning. - 0039-6591. ; , s. 225-239

  • ARISTOCRATIC WEALTH AND INEQUALITY IN A CHANGING SOCIETY: SWEDEN, 1750–1900
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of History. - : Routledge. - 0346-8755. ; 44:1, s. 27-52
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The role of the European nobility and their ability to retain their political and economic power are part of the debate on the modernization of Europe’s economy. This paper contributes to the literature by exploring the wealth of the Swedish nobility as the country evolved from an agrarian to an industrial economy. We use a sample of 200+ probate inventories of nobles for each of the benchmark years 1750, 1800, 1850 and 1900. We show that the nobility, less than 0.5 per cent of the population, was markedly dominant in 1750: the average noble was 60 times richer than the average person, and the nobles held 29 per cent of all private wealth. 90 per cent of the nobles were richer than the average person. By 1900 the advantage of the nobles’ wealth had declined; the group held only 5 per cent of total private wealth. At the same time, stratification within the nobility had increased dramatically. One group of super-rich Swedish nobles, often large land owners from the high nobility, possessed the biggest fortunes, but a large minority of nobles were no richer than the average Swede.

  • Wealth inequality in Sweden, 1750–1900†
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Economic history review. - 0013-0117. ; 71, s. 772-794
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article examines the evolution of wealth inequality in Sweden from 1750 to 1900, contributing both to the debate on early modern and modern inequality and to the general debate on the pattern of inequality during industrialization. The pre-industrial period (1750–1850) is for the first time examined for Sweden at the national level. The study uses a random sample of probate inventories from urban and rural areas across the country, adjusted for age and social class. Estimates are provided for the years 1750, 1800, 1850, and 1900. The results show a gradual growth in inequality as early as the mid-eighteenth century, with the sharpest rise in the late nineteenth century. Whereas the early growth in inequality was connected to changes in the countryside and in agriculture, the later growth was related to industrialization encompassing both compositional effects and strong wealth accumulation among the richest. The level of inequality in Sweden in 1750 was lower than for other western European countries, but by 1900 Sweden was just as unequal.

  • Improving environmental performance in shipping
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Shipping and the Environment: Improving Environmental Performance in Marine Transportation. - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer. - 9783662490457 ; , s. 399-418
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This book addresses the environmental issues related to shipping and the natural environment, including descriptions of and proposed solutions to the issues. Currently, challenges exist that must be addressed if shipping is to become sustainable and fulfil the zero vision of no harmful emissions to the environment. In this chapter, we evaluate the steps that have been taken (if any) to limit the various environmental issues and discuss possible steps to be taken to improve environmental performance. Furthermore, future challenges must also be addressed, e.g., the current trend of increasing ship operations in the Arctic. In general, three factors could be addressed in order to reach environmentally sustainable shipping: regulations, technical solutions, and increased environmental awareness. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2016. • Expression and regulation of CYP17A1 and 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase in cells of the nervous system : potential effects of vitamin D on brain steroidogenesis
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Neurochemistry International. - : Elsevier BV. - 0197-0186 .- 1872-9754. ; 113, s. 46-55
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Steroids are reported to have diverse functions in the nervous system. Enzymatic production of steroid hormones has been reported in different cell types, including astrocytes and neurons. However, the information on some of the steroidogenic enzymes involved is insufficient in many respects. Contradictory results have been reported concerning the relative importance of different cell types in the nervous system for expression of CYP17A1 and 3b-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3b-HSD). 3b-HSD is important in all basic steroidogenic pathways and CYP17A1 is required to form sex hormones. In the current investigation we studied the expression of these enzymes in cultured primary rat astrocytes, in neuron-enriched cells from rat cerebral cortex and in human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells, a cell line often used as an in vitro model of neuronal function and differentiation. As part of this study we also examined potential effects on CYP17A1 and 3b-HSD by vitamin D, a compound previously shown to have regulatory effects in steroid hormone-producing cells outside the brain. The results of our study indicate that astrocytes are a major site for expression of 3b-HSD whereas expression of CYP17A1 is found in both astrocytes and neurons. The current data suggest that neurons, contrary to some previous reports, are not involved in 3b-HSD reactions. Previous studies have shown that vitamin D can influence gene expression and hormone production by steroidogenic enzymes in some cells. We found that vitamin D suppressed CYP17A1-mediated activity by 20% in SH-SY5Ycells and astrocytes. Suppression of CYP17A1 mRNA levels was considerably stronger, about 50% in SH-SY5Y cells and 75% in astrocytes. In astrocytes 3b-HSD was also suppressed by vitamin D, about 20% at the enzyme activity level and 60% at the mRNA level. These data suggest that vitamin D-mediated regulation of CYP17A1 and 3b-HSD, particularly on the transcriptional level, may play a role in the nervous system.

  • Oxidation of a Dispersion-Strengthened Powder Metallurgical FeCrAl Alloy in the Presence of O2 at 1,100°C: The Influence of Water Vapour
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Oxidation of Metals. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1573-4889 .- 0030-770X. ; 83:5-6, s. 533-558
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The oxidation behaviour of the FeCrAl alloy Kanthal(A (R)) APMT in O-2 + N-2 and O-2 + N-2 + H2O environments at 1,100 A degrees C was investigated using thermogravimetry and detailed analyses of the scale morphology with SEM/EDX and STEM/EDX. Wrought FeCrAl alloy Kanthal(A (R)) AF was used as a reference. Exposure time was up to 168 h. Water vapour influenced the early oxide growth kinetics. This effect is explained in terms of water acting as an oxidant, simultaneously with O-2. During later stages of the exposures, H2O had no effect on the kinetics of oxidation.
