  • Identification of genes predominantly expressed in human macrophages
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Atherosclerosis. - : Elsevier BV. ; 177, s. 287-290
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Identification of cell and tissue specific genes may provide novel insights to signaling systems and functions. Macrophages play a key role in many diseases including atherosclerosis. Using DNA microarrays we compared the expression of approximately 10,000 genes in 56 human tissues and identified 23 genes with predominant expression in macrophages. The identified genes include both genes known to be macrophage specific and genes previously not well described in this cell type. Tissue distribution of two genes, liver X receptor (LXR) alpha and interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL1RN), was verified by real-time RT-PCR. We conclude that comparison of expression profiles from a large number of tissues can be used to identify genes that are predominantly expressed in certain tissues. Identification of novel macrophage specific genes may increase our understanding of the role of this cell in different diseases.

  • Electric field aligned growth of single-walled nanotubes
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Current Applied Physics. - : Elsevier BV. - 1567-1739. ; 4, s. 595-598
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Electric field aligned, single-walled carbon nanotubes are grown between electrodes using thermal chemical vapour deposition (CVD) of methane. The growth occurs on a thin film layered catalyst of aluminium, iron and molybdenum patterned on top of electrodes. The nanotubes bridge 10 μm sized electrode gaps and have a typical diameter of less than 2 nm as measured by Raman spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy. We present electrical transport measurements on a directly grown nanotube which shows p-type semiconducting behaviour.

  • Increased orderliness of growth hormone (GH) secretion in GH-deficient adults with low serum insulin-like growth factor I.
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: The Journal of clinical endocrinology and metabolism. - : The Endocrine Society. - 0021-972X .- 1945-7197. ; 87:6, s. 2863-9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Available studies suggest that a proportion of GH-deficient (GHD) adults maintain serum IGF-I concentrations within the age- and sex-matched normal range. The basis for this distinction is not known. In this study 24-h GH profiles (sampling every 30 min) were appraised in five GHD adults with low serum IGF-I concentrations (<2 SD of the age- and sex-matched normal range), five GHD adults with normal serum IGF-I levels (within +/-2 SD), and five healthy subjects. Serial GH concentrations, measured using a chemiluminescence assay, were analyzed by deconvolution and approximate entropy (ApEn; regularity) analyses. The apparent half-duration of GH secretory bursts was longer in both GHD groups than in the healthy controls, as determined by deconvolution analysis (P < 0.05 each). The GH burst frequency was higher, the interburst interval was shorter, and the GH burst amplitude was lower in GHD adults with normal serum IGF-I than in healthy controls (P < 0.05, P < 0.05, and P < 0.01, respectively). The percentage of total daily GH secretion that was pulsatile was also reduced in the GHD adults with normal serum IGF-I compared with the other two groups (P < 0.05 and P < 0.05, respectively). In contrast, ApEn ratios were lower in the GHD adults with low serum IGF-I than in the GHD adults with normal IGF-I and controls (P < 0.01 and P < 0.05, respectively). Serum IGF-I concentrations correlated positively with ApEn ratios in the total study population (n = 15) and in the GHD adults (n = 10). In conclusion, 24-h patterns of GH release differed in GHD adults with low vs. normal serum IGF-I concentrations. GHD adults with low IGF-I levels maintain low ApEn ratios (denoting greater relative orderliness of GH secretion), whereas GHD patients with normal IGF-I values generate a high frequency, low amplitude GH output. The foregoing contrasts point to distinct neuroendocrine features of the GH-deficient state of adults, which can be related to concurrent IGF-I production.

  • Integrerad planering och kollektivtrafik : ny spårvägslinje i Norrköping
  • 2004
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Changing the modal split in urban transport systems towards an increasingshare for public transport is generally seen as a necessary prerequisite forsustainability. However, it is not an easy task to improve thecompetitiveness of public transport with only traditional system internalmeasures, e.g. fares, vehicle design, comfort, safety. There is a strongassumption that efficient public transport systems demand a supportive andintegrated urban planning. Measures such as car restrictions, trafficpriorities, high densities in residential areas, "anti-sprawl" policies etc,are important if the target is to create a more competitive alternative tothe private car in urban settings. In Sweden there is a growing awareness atthe national political level that integrated planning is a measure that mustbe used to reach the targets associated with the very ambitious environmentalpolicy. But there is a lack of ideas and knowledge about the existingobstacles to integrated planning at the local level in the present system. This report will discuss the results from a research and development projectwith the focus on integrated planning. In the Swedish middle-sized city ofNorrköping, an extension of the already existing tramway network was exploredin the project. The extension was conceptualised as a transport solution anda city renewal project, bringing new life and economic vitality to older citydistricts. The results clearly indicate that integrated planning, i.e.combining traffic and town planning, is a tool with a very strong capabilityto change the present situation in cities into something substantiallydifferent. But this can not be done without a far-reaching reorganisation andan institutional renewal of local planning and policy procedures, whichincludes the relations between local, regional and national levels in thepolitical and planning system.
