  • Measurement of the sign of the spectroscopic quadrupole moment for the 2(1)(+) state in Se-70: No evidence for oblate shape
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 98:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using a method whereby molecular and atomic ions are independently selected, an isobarically pure beam of Se-70 ions was postaccelerated to an energy of 206 MeV using REX-ISOLDE. Coulomb-excitation yields for states in the beam and target nuclei were deduced by recording deexcitation gamma rays in the highly segmented MINIBALL gamma-ray spectrometer in coincidence with scattered particles in a silicon detector. At these energies, the Coulomb-excitation yield for the first 2(+) state is expected to be strongly sensitive to the sign of the spectroscopic quadrupole moment through the nuclear reorientation effect. Experimental evidence is presented here for a prolate shape for the first 2(+) state in Se-70, reopening the question over whether there are, as reported earlier, deformed oblate shapes near to the ground state in the light selenium isotopes.

  • Potential roles for the small leucine-rich proteoglycans biglycan and fibromodulin in ectopic ossification of tendon induced by exercise and in modulating rotarod performance
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Medicine & Science in Sports. - : Wiley. - 1600-0838 .- 0905-7188. ; 19:4, s. 536-546
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a detailed comparison of ectopic ossification (EO) found in tendons of biglycan (Bgn), fibromodulin (Fmod) single and double Bgn/Fmod-deficient (DKO) mice with aging. At 3 months, Fmod KO, Bgn KO and DKO displayed torn cruciate ligaments and EO in their quadriceps tendon, menisci and cruciate and patellar ligaments. The phenotype was the least severe in the Fmod KO, intermediate in the Bgn KO and the most severe in the DKO. This condition progressed with age in all three mouse strains and resulted in the development of large supernumerary sesmoid bones. To determine the role of exercise in the extent of EO, we subjected normal and DKO mice to a treadmill exercise 3 days a week for 4 weeks. In contrast to previous findings using more rigorous exercise regimes, the EO in moderately exercised DKO was decreased compared with unexercised DKO mice. Finally, DKO and Bgn KO mice tested using a rotarod showed a reduced ability to maintain their grip on a rotating cylinder compared with wild-type controls. In summary, we show (1) a detailed description of EO formed by Bgn, Fmod or combined depletion, (2) the role of exercise in modulating EO and (3) that Bgn and Fmod are critical in controlling motor function.

  • Annealing characteristics of electrically isolated InGaAsP devices
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Applied Physics Letters. - : AIP Publishing. - 0003-6951 .- 1077-3118. ; 91:6, s. 062112-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The authors report on the effects of fluorine implants on the sheet resistivity of n-type InGaAsP layers grown lattice matched to InP by metal organic molecular beam epitaxy. Projected range matched fluorine ions are implanted at multiple energies and single MeV energy at room temperature (RT) and 77 K in both cases. Hall and resistivity measurements are carried out for the van der Pauw samples and the evolution of sheet resistivity (R-s) as a function of annealing temperature was studied in both cases. Fluorine multienergy implantation at 77 K produces higher as-implanted resistivity layers of similar to 10(7) Omega/square compared to RT implants. It is further observed that RT and 77 K implants recover to their preimplanted sheet resistivity values as soon as they are annealed at temperatures higher than 500 degrees C. Substrate temperature and collision cascade density due to multiple energy implants are found to play an important role to optimize the isolation process.

  • Self-reported use of tobacco products in nine rural INDEPTH Health and Demographic Surveillance Systems in Asia
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Global Health Action. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1654-9716 .- 1654-9880. ; 2, s. 19-27
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Tobacco use is the most preventable cause of premature death and disability. Even though tobacco use is common in many Asian countries, reliable and comparable data on the burden imposed by tobacco use in this region are sparse, and surveillance systems to track trends are in their infancy.OBJECTIVE: To assess and compare the prevalence of tobacco use and its associated factors in nine selected rural sites in five Asian countries.METHODS: Tobacco use among 9,208 men and 9,221 women aged 25-64 years in nine Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS) sites in five Asian countries of the INDEPTH Network were examined in 2005 as part of a broader survey of the major chronic non-communicable disease risk factors. All sites used a standardised protocol based on the WHO STEPS approach to risk factor surveillance; expanded questions of local relevance, including chewing tobacco, were also included. Multivariable logistic regression was used to assess demographic factors associated with tobacco use.RESULTS: Tobacco use, whether smoked or chewed, was common across all sites with some notable variations. More than 50% of men smoked daily; this applied to almost all age groups. Few women smoked daily in any of the sites. However, women were more likely to chew tobacco than men in all sites except Vadu in India. Tobacco use in men began in late adolescence in most of the sites and the number of cigarettes smoked daily ranged from three to 15. Use of both forms of tobacco, smoked and chewed, was associated with age, gender and education. Men were more likely to smoke compared to women, smoking increased with age in the four sites in Bangladesh but not in other sites and with low level of education in all the sites.CONCLUSION: The prevalence of tobacco use, regardless of the type of tobacco, was high among men in all of these rural populations with tobacco use started during adolescence in all HDSS sites. Innovative communication strategies for behaviour change targeting adolescents in schools and adult men and women at work or at home, may create a mass awareness about adverse health consequences of tobacco smoking or chewing tobacco. Such efforts, to be effective, however, need to be supported by strong legislation and leadership. Only four of the five countries involved in this multi-site study have ratified the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, and even where it has been ratified, implementation is uneven.

  • Is there Really a Unit Root in the Inflation Rate? More Evidence from Panel Data Models
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Applied Economics Letters. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1466-4291 .- 1350-4851. ; 15:3, s. 161-164
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Time series unit root evidence suggests that inflation is nonstationary. By contrast, when using more powerful panel unit root tests, Culver and Papell (1997) find that inflation is stationary. In this article, we test the robustness of this result by applying a battery of recent panel unit root tests. The results suggest that the stationarity of inflation holds even after controlling for cross-sectional dependence and structural change.

  • Panel cointegration and the monetary exchange rate model
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Economic Modelling. - : Elsevier BV. - 0264-9993. ; 26:2, s. 506-513
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper re-examines the validity of the monetary exchange rate model during the post-Bretton Woods era for 18 OECD countries. Our analysis simultaneously considers the presence of both cross-sectional dependence and multiple structural breaks, which have not received much attention in previous studies of the monetary model. The empirical results indicate that the monetary model emerges only when the presence of structural breaks and cross-country dependence has been taken into account. Evidence is also provided suggesting that the breaks in the monetary model can be derived from the underlying purchasing power parity relation. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Tumor necrosis factor alpha stimulation of Rac1 activity. Role of isoprenylcysteine carboxylmethyltransferase
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: J Biol Chem. ; 280:19, s. 18790-18796
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have previously demonstrated that both isoprenylcysteine carboxylmethyltransferase (ICMT) and one of its substrates, the RhoGTPase Rac1, are critical for the tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF alpha) stimulation of vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 expression in endothelial cells (EC). Here, we have shown that ICMT regulates TNF alpha stimulation of Rac1 activity. TNF alpha stimulation of EC increased the membrane association of Rac1, an event that is essential for Rac1 activity. ICMT inhibitor N-acetyl-S-farnesyl-L-cysteine (AFC) blocked the accumulation of Rac1 into the membrane both in resting and TNF alpha-stimulated conditions. Similarly, the membrane-associated Rac1 was lower in Icmt-deficient versus wild-type mouse embryonic fibroblasts (MEFs). TNF alpha also increased the level of GTP-Rac1, the active form of Rac1, in EC. AFC completely suppressed the TNF alpha stimulation of increase in GTP-Rac1 levels. Confocal microscopy revealed resting EC Rac1 was present in the plasma membrane and also in the perinuclear region. AFC mislocalized Rac1, both from the plasma membrane and the perinuclear region. Mislocalization of Rac1 was also observed in Icmt-deficient versus wild-type MEFs. To determine the consequences of ICMT inhibition, we investigated the effect of AFC on p38 mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase phosphorylation, which is downstream of Rac1. AFC inhibited the TNF alpha stimulation of p38 MAP kinase phosphorylation in EC. TNF alpha stimulation of p38 MAP kinase phosphorylation was also significantly attenuated in Icmt-deficient versus wild-type MEFs. To understand the mechanism of inhibition of Rac1 activity, we examined the effect of ICMT inhibition on the interaction of Rac1 with its inhibitor, Rho guanine nucleotide dissociation inhibitor (RhoGDI). The association of Rac1 with its inhibitor RhoGDI was dramatically increased in the Icmt-deficient versus wild-type MEFs both in resting as well as in TNF alpha-stimulated conditions, suggesting that RhoGDI was involved in inhibiting Rac1 activity under the conditions of ICMT inhibition. These results suggest that ICMT regulates Rac1 activity by controlling the interaction of Rac1 with RhoGDI. We hypothesize that ICMT regulates the release of Rac1 from RhoGDI.
