The aim of our research was to examine teachers develop when they were part of collaborative discussions based on video recordings and video edited material from specific lessons in their own practice. Our study had two focus; one was to investigate methods and tools that teachers can use to develop their ability in assessment when their students where working with multimodal tasks and the other was to examine how video can be used by teachers wanting to obtain knowledge about assessing.Our study is based on several theories about when teachers collaborate to create new knowledge. The first is the design theoretical approach – where visual ethnography and a semiotic approach contribute to problematize the use and mixture of different modes. A basic assumption of the framework here is that meanings are made and communicated in mathematics through a wide range of semiotic modes. By using video as an essential tool in our research our framework theories concerning visual ethnography, video documentation and individuals as reflective practitioners are also needed.We will choose to highlight some findings that concern the following themes: The use of tasks for assessment, The collaborative talk, The equipment, Ethical dilemmas. Most common was one choice of esthetical mode at a time (combined with written and verbal text), but there were also lessons with mixtures such as stations with different activities. Collaborative talks were evaluated as a meaningful way of sharing knowledge, and the video tool for this, although it raised important ethical discussions. Working with the assessment framework was of great interest to the teachers but it took a lot of time from their ordinary work. In this way the project highlighted more general aspects of school development.The relevance to Nordic educational research also concerns teachers´ use of collaborative talks in assessment work, multimodal tasks in mathematics and video as a research tool in general.

The aim of the research was to examine teachers´ professional development when they participated in collaborative discussions based on video recordings and video edited material from specific lessons in their own practice. The study had two foci one was to investigate methods and tools that teachers can use to develop their ability to assess their students while working on multimodal tasks. The other was to examine how video can be used by teachers wanting to obtain knowledge about assessing students. The study is based on several theories about when teachers collaborate to create new knowledge.   • Relationship between folate concentration and expression of folate-associated genes in tissue and plasma after intraoperative administration of leucovorin in patients with colorectal cancer

    • PURPOSE: The aim of study was to investigate the relationship between folate concentration and expression of folate-associated genes in tumour, mucosa and plasma of patients with colorectal cancer, after intraoperative administration of bolus leucovorin (LV). METHODS: Eighty patients were randomized into four groups to receive 0, 60, 200, or 500 mg/m(2) LV, respectively. Tissue and plasma folate concentrations were assessed by LC-MS/MS. Gene expression of ABCC3/MRP3, FPGS, GGH, MTHFD1L, SLC46A1/PCFT, and SLC19A1/RFC-1 was determined using quantitative PCR. RESULTS: The folate concentration in tumour increased with increasing dosage of LV. Half of the patients treated with 60 mg/m(2) did not reach a level above the levels of untreated patients. A significant correlation between folate concentration in tumour and mucosa was found in untreated patients, and in the group treated with 60 mg/m(2) LV. The 5-MTHF/LV ratio correlated negatively with folate concentration in mucosa, whereas a positive correlation was found in tumour of patients who received 200 or 500 mg/m(2) LV. A positive correlation was found between folate concentration and expression of all genes, except MTHFD1L, in patients who received LV. There was a negative correlation between 5-MTHF concentration in plasma of untreated patients and expression of GGH and SLC46A1/PCFT in tumour. CONCLUSIONS: The results indicate the possibility of using the individual plasma 5-MTHF/LV ratio after LV injection as a surrogate marker for tissue folate concentration. Expression of several folate-associated genes is associated with folate concentration in tissue and plasma and may become useful when predicting response to LV treatment.

  • The impact of increased immigration to Sweden on the incidence and treatment of patients with HCC and underlying liver disease

    • Background: Sweden has traditionally been considered a country with a low incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, the increasing number of immigrants from areas with a high incidence of HCC might affect the number of HCC patients in Sweden. Aim: To examine trends in the incidence, treatment and overall survival of patients with HCC and an underlying liver disease (ULD) from a restricted, well-defined region of Sweden, between 2000 and 2014. Patients and methods: Nine hundred and eight patients with HCC were identified. Subjects were grouped into 5-year periods, and analysed for HCC diagnosis, ULD, staging and treatment selection in populations born outside Sweden versus non-immigrants and patient survival. The regions were Africa, Asia, EU-28 together with America and the Nordic countries, eastern Europe and Sweden. Results: Over the time periods, the patients with HCC and ULD increased. More patients from Africa had HCC and ULD than what would have been expected based on the number of immigrants from this region and they were also significantly younger than Sweden-born patients. For patients from Africa, Asia and eastern Europe; viral hepatitis was dominating ULDs. Patients from Africa, Asia and eastern Europe were subjected to liver transplantation (LT) in higher proportions than patients from Sweden. The survival rate for patients from eastern Europe was significantly better. Conclusions: Immigration increased the incidence of HCC and the need for active treatment such as LT. This fact raises the question of whether immigrants from regions with a high incidence of HCC ought to be subjected to mandatory hepatitis B and C virus (HBV and HCV) diagnosis and consequent liver ultrasounds for diagnosis of occult HCC. With such strategies, the morbidity and mortality of HCC could be reduced.
