  • Observation of Bunched Blinking from Individual CdSe/CdS and CdSe/ZnS Colloidal Quantum Dots
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: The Journal of Physical Chemistry C. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1932-7447 .- 1932-7455. ; 116:23, s. 12786-12790
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Blinking and time correlation between fluorescences of neighboring negatively charged CdSe/CdS and CdSe/ZnS colloidal quantum dots have been studied experimentally. A tendency of synchronous blinking, that is, a bunching effect, is clearly observed from two neighboring QDs with a spatial separation up to 1.1 mu m. We believe that our observations will help to better understand the mechanisms for the blinking.

  • Pdx1 Maintains beta Cell Identity and Function by Repressing an alpha Cell Program
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Cell Metabolism. - : Elsevier BV. - 1550-4131 .- 1932-7420. ; 19:2, s. 259-271
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Pdx1 is a homeobox-containing transcription factor that plays a key role in pancreatic development and adult beta cell function. In this study, we traced the fate of adult beta cells after Pdx1 deletion. As expected, beta-cell-specific removal of Pdx1 resulted in severe hyperglycemia within days. Surprisingly, a large fraction of Pdx1-deleted cells rapidly acquired ultrastructural and physiological features of a cells, indicating that a robust cellular reprogramming had occurred. Reprogrammed cells exhibited a global transcriptional shift that included derepression of the alpha cell transcription factor MafB, resulting in a transcriptional profile that closely resembled that of alpha cells. These findings indicate that Pdx1 acts as a master regulator of beta cell fate by simultaneously activating genes essential for beta cell identity and repressing those associated with alpha cell identity. We discuss the significance of these findings in the context of the emerging notion that loss of beta cell identity contributes to the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes.

  • Understanding the behavior of in-memory computing workloads
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: IISWC 2014 - IEEE International Symposium on Workload Characterization. - 9781479964536 ; , s. 22-30
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • © 2014 IEEE. The increasing demands of big data applications have led researchers and practitioners to turn to in-memory computing to speed processing. For instance, the Apache Spark framework stores intermediate results in memory to deliver good performance on iterative machine learning and interactive data analysis tasks. To the best of our knowledge, though, little work has been done to understand Spark's architectural and microarchitectural behaviors. Furthermore, although conventional commodity processors have been well optimized for traditional desktops and HPC, their effectiveness for Spark workloads remains to be studied. To shed some light on the effectiveness of conventional generalpurpose processors on Spark workloads, we study their behavior in comparison to those of Hadoop, CloudSuite, SPEC CPU2006, TPC-C, and DesktopCloud. We evaluate the benchmarks on a 17-node Xeon cluster. Our performance results reveal that Spark workloads have significantly different characteristics from Hadoop and traditional HPC benchmarks. At the system level, Spark workloads have good memory bandwidth utilization (up to 50%), stable memory accesses, and high disk IO request frequency (200 per second). At the microarchitectural level, the cache and TLB are effective for Spark workloads, but the L2 cache miss rate is high. We hope this work yields insights for chip and datacenter system designers.

  • The carbon budget of terrestrial ecosystems in East Asia over the last two decades
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Biogeosciences. - : Copernicus GmbH. - 1726-4189. ; 9:9, s. 3571-3586
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This REgional Carbon Cycle Assessment and Processes regional study provides a synthesis of the carbon balance of terrestrial ecosystems in East Asia, a region comprised of China, Japan, North and South Korea, and Mongolia. We estimate the current terrestrial carbon balance of East Asia and its driving mechanisms during 1990-2009 using three different approaches: inventories combined with satellite greenness measurements, terrestrial ecosystem carbon cycle models and atmospheric inversion models. The magnitudes of East Asia's terrestrial carbon sink from these three approaches are comparable: -0.293 +/- 0.033 PgC yr(-1) from inventory-remote sensing model-data fusion approach, -0.413 +/- 0.141 PgC yr(-1)(not considering biofuel emissions) or -0.224 +/- 0.141 PgC yr(-1) (considering biofuel emissions) for carbon cycle models, and -0.270 +/- 0.507 PgC yr(-1) for atmospheric inverse models. Here and in the following, the numbers behind +/- signs are standard deviations. The ensemble of ecosystem modeling based analyses further suggests that at the regional scale, climate change and rising atmospheric CO2 together resulted in a carbon sink of -0.289 +/- 0.135 PgC yr(-1), while land-use change and nitrogen deposition had a contribution of -0.013 +/- 0.029 PgC yr(-1) and -0.107 +/- 0.025 PgC yr(-1), respectively. Although the magnitude of climate change effects on the carbon balance varies among different models, all models agree that in response to climate change alone, southern China experienced an increase in carbon storage from 1990 to 2009, while northern East Asia including Mongolia and north China showed a decrease in carbon storage. Overall, our results suggest that about 13-27% of East Asia's CO2 emissions from fossil fuel burning have been offset by carbon accumulation in its terrestrial territory over the period from 1990 to 2009. The underlying mechanisms of carbon sink over East Asia still remain largely uncertain, given the diversity and intensity of land management processes, and the regional conjunction of many drivers such as nutrient deposition, climate, atmospheric pollution and CO2 changes, which cannot be considered as independent for their effects on carbon storage.
