  • DUALITY FOR COALGEBRAS FOR VIETORIS AND MONADICITY
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of Symbolic Logic (JSL). - 0022-4812 .- 1943-5886.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We prove that the opposite of the category of coalgebras for the Vietoris endofunctor on the category of compact Hausdorff spaces is monadic over $\mathsf {Set}$ . We deliver an analogous result for the upper, lower, and convex Vietoris endofunctors acting on the category of stably compact spaces. We provide axiomatizations of the associated (infinitary) varieties. This can be seen as a version of Jonsson-Tarski duality for modal algebras beyond the zero-dimensional setting.

  • Disposable microfluidic chip with integrated light sheet illumination enables diagnostics based on membrane vesicles
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: 17th International Conference on Miniaturized Systems for Chemistry and Life Sciences, MicroTAS 2013; Freiburg; Germany; 27 October 2013 through 31 October 2013. - 9781632666246

    • Cell-derived membrane vesicles that are released in body fluids are emerging as potential non-invasive biomarkers for diseases like cancer. Techniques capable of measuring the size and concentration of such membrane vesicles directly in body fluids are urgently needed. Here we report on a microfluidic chip with integrated light sheet illumination, and demonstrate accurate fluorescence Single Particle Tracking measurements of the size and concentration of membrane vesicles in cell culture medium and in interstitial fluid collected from primary human breast tumours.

  • Novel approach in investigating the rotor lamination iron losses
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: 2017 IEEE International Electric Machines and Drives Conference (IEMDC). - : IEEE conference proceedings.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents a 2-D design of a measurement setup that subjects laminated steel to field conditions corresponding to the ones of the rotor in a Salient Pole Synchronous Machine (SPSM). This stationary setup exposes the test samples to traveling magnetic waves in an air-gap. The purpose of this setup is to simulate the eddy current losses that result from high frequency magnetic fields within the volume of the test samples. The investigation of the design and the dimensioning of the model is conducted in a 2-D Finite Element Method (FEM) model. The study shows that it is possible to emulate traveling sinusoidal magnetic flux in the air-gap of a setup excluding motion. A rectangular shape of the setup was chosen due to the expected flexibility of the design as well as easy manufacturing. It was found that in order to achieve a constant amplitude of the traveling wave in the air-gap an implementation of an auxiliary winding is an effective solution.

  • Herbivore-induced branching increases sapling survival in temperate forest canopy gaps
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Ecology. - : Wiley. - 0022-0477 .- 1365-2745. ; 110, s. 1390-1402
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Tree architectures reflect the main abiotic and biotic selection pressures determining tree growth and survival. Studies have shown that trees growing in herbivore-dominated ecosystems, such as savannas, develop denser, more divaricate 'cage'-like architectures in response to chronic browsing pressure (also known as 'brown world' architectures). In contrast, trees growing under resource-limited conditions develop traits that allow them to better compete for abiotic resources (referred to as 'green world' architectures); for example, light limitation can induce trees to form more pole-like structures that allow them to grow faster in height. In temperate forests, abiotic drivers have traditionally been assumed to be the main factors affecting plant architecture. However, gap dynamics typically characterize old-growth temperate forests, where disturbances such as storms create gaps with temporary high-light availability, but also attracting intense mammalian browsing. Under such conditions, one would expect tree saplings to exhibit high architectural plasticity enabling them to develop a 'cage' in response to high herbivore pressure, but when herbivore pressure declines switch to a more pole-like structure that allows them to grow quickly in height and compete for light. We tested the ability of five dominant European tree species to induce a 'cage' architecture (hereafter referred to as 'cage plasticity') under contrasting light and herbivory regimes in a full-factorial experiment in Bialowieza Forest. We planted 720 young tree saplings in six replicated blocks in which we manipulated ungulate browsing (exclosure vs. control) and light levels (gap vs. closed forest). Two out of the five species (hornbeam Carpinus betulus and lime Tilia cordata) were able to develop a cage when exposed to ungulate herbivores but only under high-light conditions. These two species had the highest survival rates in the herbivory treatment over a 10-year period. Synthesis. Cage plasticity in temperate forest tree species may reflect an overlooked adaptation to mammal herbivory originating in a past when large mammals exerted strong selection pressures in European ecosystems. Our findings challenge the view of closed-canopy forest communities being solely driven by abiotic drivers and call for a re-evaluation of the importance of large herbivores in shaping the functional traits of temperate tree species.

  • Self-rated joint hypermobility : the five-part questionnaire evaluated in a Swedish non-clinical adult population
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders. - : BioMed Central. - 1471-2474. ; 21:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: The conventional way to identify generalised joint hypermobility is by a physical examination according to the Beighton Score. However, a physical examination is time-consuming in clinical practise and may be unfeasible in population-based studies. The self-assessment five-part questionnaire on hypermobility (5PQ) offers a more practicable way to identify GJH. The aim of this study was to test validity and reliability of the five-part questionnaire on hypermobility (5PQ) translated into Swedish on a non-clinical adult population.METHODS: A structured procedure was used for the translation of the 5PQ into Swedish. The Beighton Score was used as reference standard for generalised joint hypermobility. Test-retest reliability was tested in a separate group who filled in the questionnaire twice with a ten-week interval. Participants consisted of a convenience sample recruited in Stockholm, Sweden (2017).RESULTS: A total of 328 participants were included in the study, 297 participants in the validity group and 31 participants in the reliability group. When evaluated against a present Beighton Score with an age-dependent cut-off, the Swedish 5PQ attained a sensitivity of 91%, a specificity of 75% and an area under the curve of 0.87. The Swedish 5PQ showed substantial to almost perfect test-retest reliability.CONCLUSIONS: The Swedish 5PQ is a valid and reliable instrument to screen for or to identify generalised joint hypermobility.
