- Gender equity at technical and engineering faculties within our universities is very seldom found. There are a number of reasons why it is preferable and indeed necessary to have women as well as men in relatively equal numbers attending and developing technical faculties. After decades of initiatives supporting equal opportunities for women and men, we still find few strategies with sustainable impact concerning gender equity at levels of higher education and research in the technical sector. This situation is shared among countries both in the north and south. A presentation of experiences from Sweden will thus have some potential to apply to other countries as well. In this paper the problem of gender inequity is discussed by identifying the problem from statistical data and considering possible answers to questions about “why and how gender equity?”. The discussion concerns both undergraduate and postgraduate education at technical faculties.
