• Formation of dense partonic matter in relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions at RHIC: Experimental evaluation by the PHENIX Collaboration
• 2005
• Ingår i: Nuclear Physics, Section A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0375-9474. ; 757:1-2, s. 184-283
• Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
• Extensive experimental data from high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions were recorded using the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The comprehensive set of measurements from the first three years of RHIC operation includes charged particle multiplicities, transverse energy, yield ratios and spectra of identified hadrons in a wide range of transverse momenta (PT), elliptic flow, two-particle correlations, nonstatistical fluctuations, and suppression of particle production at high PT. The results are examined with an emphasis on implications for the formation of a new state of dense matter. We find that the state of matter created at RHIC cannot be described in terms of ordinary color neutral hadrons.

• Evolution of Organic Aerosols in the Atmosphere
• 2009
• Ingår i: Science. - : American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). - 0036-8075 .- 1095-9203. ; 326:5959, s. 1525-1529
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• Organic aerosol (OA) particles affect climate forcing and human health, but their sources and evolution remain poorly characterized. We present a unifying model framework describing the atmospheric evolution of OA that is constrained by high-time-resolution measurements of its composition, volatility, and oxidation state. OA and OA precursor gases evolve by becoming increasingly oxidized, less volatile, and more hygroscopic, leading to the formation of oxygenated organic aerosol (OOA), with concentrations comparable to those of sulfate aerosol throughout the Northern Hemisphere. Our model framework captures the dynamic aging behavior observed in both the atmosphere and laboratory: It can serve as a basis for improving parameterizations in regional and global models.

• Hydrogen storage behavior in C15 Laves phase compound TiCr2 by first principles
• 2009
• Ingår i: Journal of Applied Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 0021-8979 .- 1089-7550. ; 105:4
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• Hydrogen storage in TiCr2 alloy of AB(2) type with C15 Laves phase structure has been studied using density functional theory and plane-wave pseudopotential technique. The H atom interacts stronger with Cr atoms than with Ti and tends to occupy the g (2A2B) site due to the largest interstitial space. The g sites together with e (1A3B) sites form a three-dimensional clathratelike network, providing a diffusion pathway for H atoms, and the energy barriers for the H diffusion along these paths were computed. Interaction between two interstitial H atoms inside the TiCr2 lattice can be considered as a screened Coulomb repulsion, which seems to control the maximum hydrogen content in the metal hydrides. The absorption energies and electronic structures of metal hydrides TiCr2Hx with x=0.5-12 have been computed, and the theoretical maximum hydrogen storage capacity (between 2.6 and 3.8 wt %) agrees with experiments. The effects of the lattice expansion due to hydrogen absorption of different amounts have also been investigated.

• A novel cement-based hybrid material
• 2009
• Ingår i: New Journal of Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 1367-2630. ; 11
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and carbon nanofibers (CNFs) are known to possess exceptional tensile strength, elastic modulus and electrical and thermal conductivity. They are promising candidates for the next-generation high-performance structural and multi-functional composite materials. However, one of the largest obstacles to creating strong, electrically or thermally conductive CNT/CNF composites is the difficulty of getting a good dispersion of the carbon nanomaterials in a matrix. Typically, time-consuming steps of purification and fimctionalization of the carbon nanomaterial are required. We propose a new approach to grow CNTs/CNFs directly on the surface of matrix particles. As the matrix we selected cement, the most important construction material. We synthesized in a simple one-step process a novel cement hybrid material (CHM), wherein CNTs and CNFs are attached to the cement particles. The CHM has been proven to increase 2 times the compressive strength and 40 times the electrical conductivity of the hardened paste, i.e. concrete without sand. © IOP Publishing Ltd and Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft.

• Amerindian ancestry in Argentina is associated with increased risk for systemic lupus erythematosus
• 2008
• Ingår i: Genes and Immunity. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1466-4879 .- 1476-5470. ; 9:4, s. 389-393
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• Previous studies have demonstrated that in admixed populations, West African ancestry is associated with an increased prevalence of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). In the current study, the effect of Amerindian ancestry in SLE was examined in an admixed population in Argentina. The Argentine population is predominantly European with approximately 20% Amerindian admixture, and a very small (<2%) contribution from West Africa. The results indicate that Amerindian admixture in this population is associated with a substantial increase in SLE susceptibility risk (Odds Ratio=7.94, P=0.00006). This difference was not due to known demographic factors, including site of collection, age and gender. In addition, there were trends towards significance for Amerindian ancestry influencing renal disease, age of onset and anti-SSA antibodies. These studies suggest that populations with Amerindian admixture, like those with West African admixture, should be considered in future studies to identify additional allelic variants that predispose to SLE.

• Pulse wave velocity is associated with metabolic syndrome components in CAPD patients
• 2008
• Ingår i: American journal of nephrology. - : S. Karger AG. - 1421-9670 .- 0250-8095. ; 28:4, s. 641-646
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• Background: Overall, the proportion of deaths due to cardiovascular disease (CVD) reached 40–50% in dialysis patients. Pulse wave velocity (PWV) reflects arterial stiffness and may provide an integrated index of vascular status and CVD risk. Individual components of the metabolic syndrome (MetS) are well-established cardiovascular risk factors. Thus we conducted a cross-sectional study in continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) patients to explore the association of MetS components with PWV. Methods: Prevalent CAPD patients (n = 148, 63 M/85 F) were categorized according to the number of traits of the MetS into one of three groups (No MetS, Risk of MetS, MetS). Due to the effect of peritoneal dialysis (PD), waist circumference was not assessed. Aortic stiffness was assessed by carotid-femoral PWV (C-F PWV). Results: Patients’ MetS trait numbers were positively associated with C-F PWV (r = 0.301, p < 0.01), pulse pressure (r = 0.256, p < 0.01), systolic blood pressure (r = 0.233, p < 0.01), and serum albumin (r = 0.205, p < 0.05). In a multivariate regression analysis, PWV was independently determined by age (p < 0.01) and MetS score (p = 0.01). Adjusted R2 of the model was 0.24. Conclusion: MetS traits were closely associated with an increased C-F PWV, even after adjustment for confounders. This suggests that commonly recognized MetS criteria are useful also when predicting CVD in CAPD patients.

• Argentine population genetic structure : large variance in Amerindian contribution
• 2007
• Ingår i: American Journal of Physical Anthropology. - : Wiley. - 0002-9483 .- 1096-8644. ; 132:3, s. 455-462
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• Argentine population genetic structure was examined using a set of 78 ancestry informative markers (AIMs) to assess the contributions of European, Amerindian, and African ancestry in 94 individuals members of this population. Using the Bayesian clustering algorithm STRUCTURE, the mean European contribution was 78%, the Amerindian contribution was 19.4%, and the African contribution was 2.5%. Similar results were found using weighted least mean square method: European, 80.2%; Amerindian, 18.1%; and African, 1.7%. Consistent with previous studies the current results showed very few individuals (four of 94) with greater than 10% African admixture. Notably, when individual admixture was examined, the Amerindian and European admixture showed a very large variance and individual Amerindian contribution ranged from 1.5 to 84.5% in the 94 individual Argentine subjects. These results indicate that admixture must be considered when clinical epidemiology or case control genetic analyses are studied in this population. Moreover, the current study provides a set of informative SNPs that can be used to ascertain or control for this potentially hidden stratification. In addition, the large variance in admixture proportions in individual Argentine subjects shown by this study suggests that this population is appropriate for future admixture mapping studies.
