  • Isomeric States In 208Hg And 209Tl Populated In Fragmentation Of 238U
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Acta Physica Polonica. Series B: Elementary Particle Physics, Nuclear Physics, Statistical Physics, Theory of Relativity, Field Theory. - 0587-4254. ; 40:3, s. 871-874
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The nuclear structure of neutron-rich N > 126 nuclei has been investigated following their production via relativistic projectile fragmentation of a E/A = 1 GeV U-238 beam on a Be target. The preliminary analysis indicates the presence of previously unreported isomeric states in the N = 128 isotones Hg-208 and Tl-209.

  • Nuclear Structure "Southeast" of 208Pb: Isomeric states in 208Hg and 209Tl
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 80:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The nuclear structure of neutron-rich N>126 nuclei has been investigated following their production via relativistic projectile fragmentation of a E/A=1 GeV U-238 beam. Metastable states in the N=128 isotones Hg-208 and Tl-209 have been identified. Delayed gamma-ray transitions are interpreted as arising from the decay of I-pi=(8(+)) and (17/2(+)) isomers, respectively. The data allow for the so far most comprehensive verification of the shell-model approach in the region determined by magic numbers Z < 82 and N>126.

  • Angular Momentum Population In Fragmentation Reactions
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Acta Physica Polonica. Series B: Elementary Particle Physics, Nuclear Physics, Statistical Physics, Theory of Relativity, Field Theory. - 0587-4254. ; 40:3, s. 889-892
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Neutron-deficient nuclei with N = 126 have been populated following projectile fragmentation of a U-238 beam with energy 1 GeV/A. The decay of several previously reported isomers has been measured. This will allow us to calculate high-spin isomeric ratios and compare them with model calculations to allow a better understanding of the reaction mechanism.

  • beta -Delayed gamma -Ray Spectroscopy of Heavy Neutron Rich Nuclei "South" of Lead
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Acta Physica Polonica B. - 0587-4254. ; 40:3, s. 867-870
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Relativistic projectile fragmentation of a Pb-208 primary beam has been used to produce neutron-rich nuclei with proton-holes relative to the Z = 82 shell closure, i.e., "south" of Pb. beta-delayed gamma-ray spectroscopy allows to investigate the structural properties of such nuclei with A similar to 195 -> 205. The current work presents transitions de-exciting excited states in Au-204, which are the first spectroscopic information on this N = 125 isotone.

  • Structure of N≥126 Nuclei Produced in Fragmentation of 238U
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 13th International Symposium on Capture Gamma‐Ray Spectroscopy and Related Topics. - : AIP. - 0094-243X. ; 1090, s. 145-148
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The nuclear structure of neutron-rich N≥126 nuclei have been investigated following their production via relativistic projectile fragmentation of a E/A=l GeV 238U beam on a Be target. The cocktail of secondary beam products were separated and identified using the GSI FRagment Separator (FRS). The nuclei of interest were implanted in a high-granularity active stopper detector set-up consisting of 6 double sided silicon strip detectors. The associated gamma-ray transitions were detected with the RISING array, consisting of 15 Euroball cluster Ge-detectors. Time-correlated gamma decays from individually identified nuclear species have been recorded, allowing the clean identification of isomeric decays.

  • The pygmy hog is a unique genus : 19th century taxonomists got it right first time round
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution. - : Elsevier BV. - 1055-7903 .- 1095-9513. ; 45:2, s. 427-436
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The pygmy hog, Sus salvanius, the smallest and rarest extant suid was first described as the only member of the genus Porcula. It is currently regarded as member of the genus Sus and a sister taxon of the domestic pig/Eurasian wild boar (Sus scrofa). Phylogenctic analyses of 2316 bp from three mtDNA loci (control-region, cytochrome b, 16S) by Bayesian inference and statistical testing of alternative phylogenetic hypotheses all support the original classification of the pygmy hog as a unique genus. Thus, we propose that the species name Porcula salvania should be resurrected. The reclassification will heighten awareness of the need for the future protection and survival of this unique species.

  • Physical and anti-microbial characteristics of carbon nanoparticles prepared from lamp soot
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Nanotechnology. - : IOP Publishing. - 0957-4484 .- 1361-6528. ; 18:44
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Soot originating from the burning of butter and mustard oil in a lamp with a cotton wick was collected on a brass plate and dispersed in water and carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) as naked, and as Gum Arabic (GA, a anionic polyelectrolyte)-coated nanoparticles in water. They were physically characterized, and their anti-bacterial activities were probed on gram positive and negative bacterial colonies. TEM data revealed the presence of 35-55 nm diameter spherical carbon nanoparticles in water and CCl4. The dynamic light scattering determined the average hydrodynamic diameter for the same samples, which was found to be approximate to 100 nm ( in CCl4) and approximate to 240 nm ( in water), implying the packing of these nanoparticles into clusters. GA-coated particles yielded stable suspensions in water, but the clusters were almost the same in size (approximate to 250 nm). The zeta potential distributions of the naked and the GA-coated nanoparticles were found to be unimodal and bimodal, respectively, with both yielding mean zeta potential values nearly equal to zero. Results of energy-dispersive x-ray analysis (EDAX) confirmed the absence of toxic metallic elements inside the specimen. X-ray diffraction study confirmed the presence of amorphous as well as graphitized carbon in these nanostructures. The anti-microbial activities in terms of growth inhibition for the carbon nanoparticles against Staphylococcus aureus, ATCC 13709 ( native strain) and Klebsiella pneumonia ATCC 29655 ( native strain) were assayed in agar gel. In vitro testing revealed significant anti-microbial activity against Klebsiella pneumonia, but carbon nanoparticles were unable to kill Staphylococcus aureus.
