  • The population of metastable states as a probe of relativistic-energy fragmentation reactions
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters. Section B: Nuclear, Elementary Particle and High-Energy Physics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693. ; 723:4–5, s. 302-306
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Isomeric ratios have been measured for high-spin states in Po-198,200,206,208(84), At-208,209,210,211(85), Rn-210,211,212,213,214(86), Fr-208,211,212,213,214(87), Ra-210,211,212,214,215(88), and Ac-215(89) following the projectile fragmentation of a 1 AGeV U-238 beam by a Be-9 target at GSI Helmholtzzentrum fur Schwerionenforschung. The fragments were separated in the fragment separator (FRS) and identified by means of energy loss and time-of-flight techniques. They were brought to rest at the centre of the RISING gamma-ray detector array and intensities of gamma rays emitted in the decay of isomeric states with half-lives between 100 ns and 40 mu s and spin values up to 55/2 (h) over bar were used to obtain the corresponding isomeric ratios. The data are compared to theoretical isomeric ratios calculated in the framework of the abrasion-ablation model. Large experimental enhancements are obtained for high-spin isomers in comparison to expected values. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Direct generation of three-photon polarization entanglement
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Nature Photonics. - 1749-4885 .- 1749-4893. ; 8:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Non-classical states of light are of fundamental importance for emerging quantum technologies. All optics experiments producing multi-qubit entangled states have until now relied on outcome post-selection, a procedure where only the measurement results corresponding to the desired state are considered. This method severely limits the usefulness of the resulting entangled states. Here, we show the direct production of polarization-entangled photon triplets by cascading two entangled downconversion processes. Detecting the triplets with high-efficiency superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors allows us to fully characterize them through quantum state tomography. We use our three-photon entangled state to demonstrate the ability to herald Bell states, a task that was not possible with previous three-photon states, and test local realism by violating the Mermin and Svetlichny inequalities. These results represent a significant breakthrough for entangled multi-photon state production by eliminating the constraints of outcome post-selection, providing a novel resource for optical quantum information processing.

  • Half-Life Systematics across the N=126 Shell Closure: Role of First-Forbidden Transitions in the β Decay of Heavy Neutron-Rich Nuclei.
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 113:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This Letter reports on a systematic study of β-decay half-lives of neutron-rich nuclei around doubly magic ^{208}Pb. The lifetimes of the 126-neutron shell isotone ^{204}Pt and the neighboring ^{200-202}Ir, ^{203}Pt, ^{204}Au are presented together with other 19 half-lives measured during the "stopped beam" campaign of the rare isotope investigations at GSI collaboration. The results constrain the main nuclear theories used in calculations of r-process nucleosynthesis. Predictions based on a statistical macroscopic description of the first-forbidden β strength reveal significant deviations for most of the nuclei with N<126. In contrast, theories including a fully microscopic treatment of allowed and first-forbidden transitions reproduce more satisfactorily the trend in the measured half-lives for the nuclei in this region, where the r-process pathway passes through during β decay back to stability.

  • DNA binding activity of Helicobacter pylori DnaB helicase : the role of the N-terminal domain in modulating DNA binding activities
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: The FEBS Journal. - : Wiley. - 1742-464X .- 1742-4658. ; 279:2, s. 234-250
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Replicative helicases are major motor proteins essential for chromosomal DNA replication in prokaryotes. Usually hexameric in solution, their DNA binding property must have different roles at stages ranging from the loading onto a branched structure at initiation from the origin to the highly processive translocation during elongation. Here, we have analysed the DNA binding activity of Helicobacter pylori (Hp) replicative helicase, DnaB. The results indicate that while the C-terminal region is important for its DNA binding activity, the N-terminus appears to dampen the proteins affinity for DNA. The masking activity of the N-terminus does not require ATP or hexamerization of HpDnaB and can be overcome by deleting the N-terminus. It can also be neutralized by engaging the N-terminus in an interaction with a partner like the C-terminus of DnaG primase. The inhibitory effect of the N-terminus on DNA binding activity is consistent with the 3D homology model of HpDnaB. Electron microscopy of the HpDnaBssDNA complex showed that HpDnaB preferentially bound at the ends of linear ssDNA and translocated along the DNA in the presence of ATP. These results provide an insight into the stimulatory and inhibitory effects of different regions of HpDnaB on DNA binding activities that may be central to the loading and translocation functions of DnaB helicases.

  • Dynamo in protostars
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Pramana (Bangalore). - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0304-4289 .- 0973-7111. ; 81:6, s. 1037-1043
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we estimate the magnetic Reynolds number of a typical protostar before and after deuterium burning, and claim for the existence of dynamo process in both the phases, because the magnetic Reynolds number of the protostar far exceeds the critical magnetic Reynolds number for dynamo action. Using the equipartition of kinetic and magnetic energies, we estimate the steady-state magnetic field of the protostar to be of the order of kilogauss, which is in good agreement with observations.
