  • Novel loci for childhood body mass index and shared heritability with adult cardiometabolic traits.
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: PLoS genetics. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1553-7404. ; 16:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The genetic background of childhood body mass index (BMI), and the extent to which the well-known associations of childhood BMI with adult diseases are explained by shared genetic factors, are largely unknown. We performed a genome-wide association study meta-analysis of BMI in 61,111 children aged between 2 and 10 years. Twenty-five independent loci reached genome-wide significance in the combined discovery and replication analyses. Two of these, located near NEDD4L and SLC45A3, have not previously been reported in relation to either childhood or adult BMI. Positive genetic correlations of childhood BMI with birth weight and adult BMI, waist-to-hip ratio, diastolic blood pressure and type 2 diabetes were detected (Rg ranging from 0.11 to 0.76, P-values <0.002). A negative genetic correlation of childhood BMI with age at menarche was observed. Our results suggest that the biological processes underlying childhood BMI largely, but not completely, overlap with those underlying adult BMI. The well-known observational associations of BMI in childhood with cardio-metabolic diseases in adulthood may reflect partial genetic overlap, but in light of previous evidence, it is also likely that they are explained through phenotypic continuity of BMI from childhood into adulthood.

  • The Association of the Brief Dementia Risk Index and Incident Dementia among Finnish 70-Year-Olds: A 5-Year Follow-Up Study
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Gerontology. - : S. Karger AG. - 1423-0003 .- 0304-324X. ; 67:4, s. 441-444
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • <b><i>Background:</i></b> An accurate identification of older individuals at increased risk of developing dementia is very important. Various dementia risk prediction models have been developed, but not all models are applicable among older population. <b><i>Objectives:</i></b> To examine the association of the Brief Dementia Risk Index (BDRI) and incidence of dementia among community-dwelling Finnish older adults. <b><i>Methods:</i></b> Participants were community-dwelling nondemented 70-year-olds examined in 2011 (<i>n</i> = 943). Cox regression model with death as a competing risk was used to analyze the association of BDRI and incident dementia (ICD-10 codes F00-03 and G30) during the 5-year follow-up (<i>n</i> = 883). <b><i>Results:</i></b> The rate of dementia incidence was 4.9% during the follow-up. Having at least moderate risk according to BDRI significantly predicted incident dementia (hazard ratio 3.18, 95% confidence interval: 1.71–5.92, <i>p</i> &#x3c; 0.001), also after adjustment with education level (2.93, 1.52–5.64, <i>p</i> = 0.001). No interaction between gender and BDRI was found. <b><i>Conclusion:</i></b> BDRI could be an applicable tool for identification of older individuals at increased risk of developing dementia in clinical settings.

  • A 1.5-5-GHz Integrated RF Transmitter Front End for Active Matching of an Antenna Cluster
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: IEEE transactions on microwave theory and techniques. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 0018-9480 .- 1557-9670. ; 68:11, s. 4728-4739
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A recently proposed method for realizing frequency-reconfigurable antennas across a wideband is based on adjusting the feed amplitudes and phases of a multiport antenna. In this article, we demonstrate the feasibility of the method, for the first time, with a conjunction of an integrated RF transmitter and a four-element antenna cluster. The implementation performs on-chip amplitude and phase tuning with supply scaling and delay tuning circuits to tune the antenna cluster without requirement of matching network. The antenna cluster is built with four closely spaced antenna elements implemented on a printed circuit board. The transmitter integrated circuit (IC) is implemented in a 28-nm CMOS process with the chip size of 0.85 mm x 0.95 mm, including pads. The proof-of-concept implementation demonstrates tunability across a wideband from 1.5 to 5 GHz. CCBY

  • Bluetooth antenna for metal-cased smart jewellery
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Electronics Letters. - : Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). - 1350-911X .- 0013-5194. ; 56:3, s. 115-117
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This Letter presents a Bluetooth antenna for metal-cased smart jewellery. The designed antenna is competent enough to operate in free space; moreover, antenna performance is investigated with cubical shape model which has the electrical properties similar to human body tissue. The measured prototype achieves 68% total efficiency in the free space and 27% total efficiency when measured with a cubical model in the Bluetooth frequency range of 2.4-2.48 GHz.

  • Utilizing a Nordic Crosswalk for Occupational Coding in an Analysis on Occupation-Specific Prolonged Sickness Absence among 7 Million Employees in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International journal of environmental research and public health. - : MDPI AG. - 1660-4601. ; 19:23
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We identified occupations with a high incidence of prolonged sickness absence (SA) in Nordic employees and explored similarities and differences between the countries. Utilizing data from national registers on 25–59-year-old wage-earners from Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden, we estimated the gender- and occupation-specific age-adjusted cumulative incidence of SA due to any cause, musculoskeletal diseases and mental disorders. To increase the comparability of occupations between the countries, we developed a Nordic crosswalk for occupational codes. We ranked occupational groups with the incidence of SA being statistically significantly higher than the population average of the country in question and calculated excess fractions with the employee population being the reference group. We observed considerable occupational differences in SA within and between the countries. Few occupational groups had a high incidence in all countries, particularly for mental disorders among men. In each country, manual occupations typically had a high incidence of SA due to any cause and musculoskeletal diseases, while service occupations had a high incidence due to mental disorders. Preventive measures targeted at specific occupational groups have a high potential to reduce work disability, especially due to musculoskeletal diseases. Particularly groups with excess SA in all Nordic countries could be at focus.
