- An (m, m, m)-array of order n is an n x n array such that each cell is assigned a set of at most m symbols from f 1,...,n g such that no symbol occurs more than m times in any row or column. An (m, m, m)-array is called avoidable if there exists a Latin square such that no cell in the Latin square contains a symbol that also belongs to the set assigned to the corresponding cell in the array. We show that there is a constant gamma such that if m <= gamma 2(k) and k >= 14, then any (m, m, m)-array of order n = 2(k) is avoidable. Such a constant gamma has been conjectured to exist for all n by Haggkvist.

- Materials that are hard to manufacture with conventional manufacturing routes can be fabricated by incorporating the advanced automation. This has motivated the authors to propose a new computational methodology which could help in quantitative and qualitative manufacturing of bulk metallic glasses (BMGs). The present model was designed to propose the critical cooling rate () based on glass transition temperature (), onset crystallization temperature () and liquidus temperature (). Available correlation between and parameters has been used to validate the modeled values of, and. It was observed that obtained results have shown a close resemblance to experimental values of . It was found that Pd-based BMGs exhibited better correlation fit than other families of BMGs. Authors believed that this investigation will be useful for processing of bulk metallic glasses in coming days.

A study of the relationship between social cognitive factors and career choice satisfaction within the technology career path : a gendered perspective

- The technology workforce is plagued by a diversity issue caused by women leaving the field at an alarming rate. This global phenomenon afflicts developing nations in particular, since women are believed to make up only 30% of the technology workforce. However, there is little empirical data from developing nations on the phenomenon since most studies on the topic have been conducted in industrialized countries. This paper therefore explores the relationship between socio-cognitive mechanisms (self-efficacy, outcome expectation, perceived social support, academia-family role conflict) and career choice satisfaction, which is posited to be one of the key influencers in an individual’s decision to continue along a particular career path. A questionnaire was used to collect data from students pursuing technology courses, such as in bachelor programmes in informatics and telecommunications, at a private university in Kenya. The findings reveal that self-efficacy, outcome expectations and perceived social support positively influence career choice satisfaction, especially among female students, whereas academic-family role conflict negatively influences career choice satisfaction of female students only. This means that government, higher education institutions and employers need to be attentive to socio-cognitive mechanisms that influence women and use this information to reduce the exodus of women from careers in technology.

Balancing the Waiting Times in a Simple Traffic Intersection Model

- We propose a novel dynamical model of a simple traffic intersection, where the state variables represent the queue lengths and the mean waiting times in the queues. Including the mean waiting times in the model allows for a more fair traffic control, where the waiting times of the individual vehicles in the various streets of the intersection are taken into account to some degree. The model is linearized and its parameters are estimated using real traffic data measured during one day in Prague. For the balancing of the waiting times, two different controllers are considered: a linear quadratic regulator and a nonlinear model predictive controller. The controllers are evaluated in simulations where real traffic data is used for the incoming flows.

- This article sheds light on some theoretical and analytical implications of defining interpreting as interaction – i.e., a specific form for human communication involving translation. Approaching interpreter-mediated encounters as interaction implies considering interlocutors’ (primary participants and interpreters) situated sense making and the complex nature of spontaneous spoken interpreter-mediated interaction. Exploring interpreting not just as a type of translation of source-language utterances into renditions but also as a specific kind of communicative situation opens up new research avenues such as exploring and explaining the interdependence between interpreters’ and monolingual participants’ verbal and non-verbal communicative behaviours. Moreover, this article highlights some practical implications of approaching interpreting as interaction in the education of interpreters and those they assist and in the professionalization process of public service interpreting.
