  • Modification of the human-broiler relationship and its potential effects on production
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Acta Agriculturae Scandinavica, Section A - Animal Science. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0906-4702 .- 1651-1972. ; 66, s. 161-167
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present study was designed to investigate the effects of additional human contact (AHC) on the human-animal relationship (HAR) in broilers and on the birds' productivity. A total of 1558 broiler one-day-old chicks were distributed into 12 equally sized pens at two different stocking densities (SDs), calculated on estimated weight at slaughter (4 pens with 32kg/m(2) and 8 pens with 16kg/m(2)). Six groups (2 high and 4 low SDs) received AHC, which consisted of 30-min sessions with visual human contact three days/week. The remaining six groups received as little human contact as possible and served as controls. A touch test was used to assess the human-broiler relationship and the production parameters measured were growth rate, mortality, feed consumption and feed conversion. The AHC treatment had a positive effect on the quality of the HAR but failed to affect any production parameter.

  • Individual identification of pigs during rearing and at slaughter using microchips
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Livestock Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 1871-1413 .- 1878-0490. ; 180, s. 233-236
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Identification  of individual pigs is essential for management, traceability, breeding, trading and disease control in commercial pig production. Conventional identification methods used for pigs, such as ear tags and tattoos, are not sufficiently reliable due to losses and code erasing. This study investigated the retention rate, functionality and tissue damage of microchips compared with conventional electronic ear tags and assessed the effects of chip size and pig age at microchip injection. A larger proportion of small (95.2%) than large(82.5%) microchips were readable throughout the rearing period (p˂0.031). It was better to inject microchips when the piglets were 9-10 weeks old compared with 1-2 weeks (p=0.058). Ear tags caused significantly more tissue damage than microchips (p=0.001). However, although microchips met the requirements of an identification system for pigs that is unique, easy to read, does not produce apparent disturbance to the animals and causes minimal pathological changes, the proportion of lost microchips was unacceptably high. Further research on chip type, pig age at marking and marking site is needed to find suitable methods for identification of individual pigs.

  • Norwegian dairy farmers' preferences for breeding goal traits and associations with herd and farm characteristics
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Acta Agriculturae Scandinavica, Section A - Animal Science. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0906-4702 .- 1651-1972. ; 68, s. 117-123
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aims of this study were to investigate variation and clustering in breeding goal trait preferences among Norwegian dairy farmers and to identify factors with a systematic influence on their preferences. An internet-based questionnaire was sent out to dairy farmers connected to the Norwegian co-operative breeding organization Geno (N = 8222), of which 10.8% answered (N = 888). Of the 15 suggested traits fertility had the highest overall ranking, while parasite resistance and methane emission had the lowest. Four distinct preference clusters were identified by the means of cluster analysis, of which two had a high preference for milk production. Differences in terms of farm and herd characteristics between clusters suggests a mixture of systematic and intrinsic effects on breeding goal trait priorities. This study shows that Norwegian dairy farmers' preferences for breeding goal traits fall into four distinct clusters, both affected by herd and farm characteristics along with intrinsic values.

  • Effects of hybrid and dietary mussel meal on broiler performance during 10 weeks of rearing
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Annual meeting of the European Association for Animal Production. - 1382-6077. ; , s. 564-564
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Organic broiler production is characterised by a long rearing period (>10 weeks) and diets based on locally available feedstuff. Until recently, conventional fast growing broilers hybrids have been used exclusively in organic broiler production in Sweden. Rearing fast growing hybrids during long periods has resulted in e.g. ascites and leg disorders and the need for alternative slow growing hybrids for these production systems has been outspoken. Moreover, the nutrient composition (especially protein quality) in the organic diets does not meet the high demands of the conventional fast growing hybrid. This study investigated broiler production performance in the fast growing hybrid Ross 308 (R) and the slower growing hybrid Rowan Ranger (RR) fed either a standard organic diet (O, 11.3 MJ ME and 164 g protein/kg feed) or an organic diet with mussel meal as protein source (M, 11.2 MJ ME and 156 g protein/kg feed) during a 10 weeks rearing period. The study included in total 389 birds housed in groups of 20-21 birds per group divided over the treatment combinations; 5 RO, 4 RM, 5 RRO and 4 RRM groups. During the rearing period, 22 birds were culled due to leg weakness and 16 died or were culled due to other reasons. The statistical analyses were performed with linear mixed models in SAS. Preliminary results indicated that R birds grew faster when fed the mussel meal diet while this difference in the response to protein quality was less pronounces in RR birds (4,586a±55.3, 3,961b±49.5, 2,919c±55.3 and 2,891c±49.5 g live weight at 71 d in the RM, RO, RRM and RRO treatment respectively, LSM±SE; different subscript letters indicate pairwise differences of P<0.05). A significantly higher proportion of RM birds were culled due to leg weakness compared to the other treatments (P<0.05). Dressing percentage was higher in R than RR birds (P<0.05), but there were no effect of diet treatment.
