  • Nanowire-Based Electrode for Acute In Vivo Neural Recordings in the Brain
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: PLoS ONE. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1932-6203. ; 8:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present an electrode, based on structurally controlled nanowires, as a first step towards developing a useful nanostructured device for neurophysiological measurements in vivo. The sensing part of the electrode is made of a metal film deposited on top of an array of epitaxially grown gallium phosphide nanowires. We achieved the first functional testing of the nanowire-based electrode by performing acute in vivo recordings in the rat cerebral cortex and withstanding multiple brain implantations. Due to the controllable geometry of the nanowires, this type of electrode can be used as a model system for further analysis of the functional properties of nanostructured neuronal interfaces in vivo.

  • Early multidisciplinary assessment was associated with longer periods of sick leave : A randomized controlled trial in a primary health care centre
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Primary Health Care. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0281-3432 .- 1502-7724. ; 31:3, s. 141-146
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ObjectiveTo study the effects on sick leave from an early multidisciplinary assessment at a primary health care centre. Design. Randomized controlled trial.SettingPatients who saw GPs at a primary health care centre in mid-Sweden and asked for a sickness certificate for psychiatric or musculoskeletal diagnoses were invited to participate. Patients included were sick-listed for less than four weeks; 33 patients were randomized either to an assessment within a week by a physiotherapist, a psychotherapist, and an occupational therapist or to "standard care". The therapists used methods and tools they normally use in their clinical work.Main outcome measureProportion of patients still sick-listed three months after randomization, total and net days on sick leave, and proportion who were on part-time sick leave.ResultsAt follow-up after three months, in contrast to the pre-trial hypothesis, there was a trend toward a higher proportion of patients still sick-listed in the intervention group (7/18) as compared with the control group (3/15). The intervention group also had significantly longer sick-listing periods (mean 58 days) than the control group (mean 36 days) (p = 0.038). The proportion of patients who were part time sick-listed was significantly higher in the intervention group (10/18) than in the control group (2/15) (p = 0.027).ConclusionsIn this study an early multidisciplinary assessment was associated with longer periods on sick leave and more individuals on part-time sick leave.

  • Den svala svenska tilliten : Förutsättningar och utmaningar
  • 2013

  • Fabrication and Characterization of Ultra-Thin PIN Silicon Detectors for Counting the Passage of MeV Ions
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Nuclear Science. - 0018-9499. ; 60:2, s. 1182-1188
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper describes the fabrication and initial characterization of an ultra-thin silicon PIN detector using a new technique in silicon nanotechnology. In collaboration with the Nuclear Physics Division and the Lund Nano Lab at Lund University, we have developed and manufactured ultra thin Delta E-detectors for spectroscopic applications. The fabrication process has been carried out using a double-polished silicon substrate n-type wafer and locally thinning by means of a 10:1 solution of 25% tetramethyl ammonium hydroxide (TMAH) with Isopropyl alcohol. More than 100 detectors of different thicknesses, down to 5 mu m with active areas ranging from 0.71 to 0.172 mm(2), have been fabricated. The main design considerations of our thin detectors were a very low leakage current below 12 nA and a low full depletion voltage at a reverse bias less than 1.5 V. Finally, most of our thin detectors offer an energy resolution (FWHM) as low as 31 keV for 5.487 MeV alpha particles from a Am-241 source.

  • It is possible to resolve micrometer movements in B-mode images
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: 2012 IEEE International Ultrasonics Symposium (IUS). ; , s. 2536-2539
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have proposed an echo localization estimator which theoretically gives infinite resolution in the axial direction in ultrasonic B-mode images during 1) echo structure tracking and 2) distance measurements of distinct echoes. The performance of the estimator was evaluated using a HDI5000 (Philips Medical Systems, Bothell, WA, USA) with a 35 mm 5-12 MHz linear array transducer. The resulting pixel size in the B-mode image was 100 mu m. The controlled setup consisted of a small water container lined with ultrasound absorber carpet and placed on a micrometer table, a triangulation laser (M5L/2, MEL Mikroelektronik GmbH, Eching, Germany) connected to a high-performance digital multimeter HP 34401A (Agilent Technologies, USA) and a thermometer TESTO 925 (Testo AG, Germany). In each of the three measurement series the micrometer table was moved approximately 15 mu m in 10-12 steps. The echo localization estimator succeeded to resolve the minute movement (< 20 mu m) with high agreement with the reference method in all three series. The correlation was (R>0.998; p <10-e38; 0.86

  • A polymer based electrode array for recordings in the cerebellum
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: 2011 5th International IEEE/EMBS Conference on Neural Engineering (NER). - 9781424441402 ; , s. 376-379
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A polymer foil based array with 9 gold electrodes for chronic electrophysiological recordings in the CNS has been developed. A polymer, SU-8, is pattered using photolithography techniques used every day in micro fabrication. This is beneficial if the electrode would be manufactured on a large scale basis. The technique makes it easy to adapt the array to best fit the structure of interest at the time, in this study the rat cerebellar cortex. The use of SU-8 as the base of the array makes the array very flexible, hence lets it stay close to the same cells following the movement of the brain. The electrodes can then be modified with platinum black to lower the impedance of the electrode up to one order of magnitude, making us able to create smaller electrodes but keeping the low impedance necessary to get a get the signal to noise ratio required. Platinum black modified arrays were also implanted chronically and showed excellent signal recording capabilities in rat cerebellum.
