  • Enhancing the Performance of the p-n Heterostructure Electrolyte for Solid Oxide Fuel Cells via A-Site-Deficiency Engineering
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1944-8244 .- 1944-8252. ; 15:42, s. 49154-49169
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Semiconductor ionic electrolytes are attracting growing interest for developing low-temperature solid oxide fuel cells (LT-SOFCs). Our recent study has proposed a p-n heterostructure electrolyte based on perovskite oxide BaCo0.4Fe0.4Zr0.1Y0.1O3-δ (BCFZY) and ZnO, achieving promising fuel cell performance. Herein, to further improve the performance of the heterostructure electrolyte, an A-site-deficiency strategy is used to solely modify BCFZY for regulating the ionic conduction and catalytic activity of the heterostructure. Two new electrolytes, B0.9CFZY-ZnO and B0.8CFZY-ZnO, were developed and systematically studied. The results show that the two samples gain improved ionic conductivity and auxiliary catalytic activity after A-site deficiency as a result of the increment of the surface and interface oxygen vacancies. The single cells with B0.9CFZY-ZnO and B0.8CFZY-ZnO exhibit enhanced peak power outputs at 450-550 °C compared to the cell based on B1.0CFZY-ZnO (typically, 745 and 795 vs 542 mW cm-2 at 550 °C). Particular attention is paid to the impact of A-site deficiency on the interface energy band alignment between BxCFZY and ZnO, which suggests that the p-n heterojunction effect of BxCFZY-ZnO for charge carrier regulation can be tuned by A-site deficiency to enable high proton transport while avoiding fuel cell current leakage. This study thus confirms the feasibility of A-site-deficiency engineering to optimize the performance of the heterostructure electrolyte for developing LT-SOFCs.

  • Unexpected Dioxin Formation During Digestion of Soil with Oxidizing Acids
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Environmental Science and Technology. - : AMER CHEMICAL SOC. - 0013-936X .- 1520-5851. ; 57:39, s. 14717-14725
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Dioxins, such as polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), are among the most toxic unintentionally produced persistent organic pollutants, and their emission is of great concern. Herein, we discovered abundant dioxin formation in soil and various organic carbon-containing matrices after digestion with aqua regia. Sigma 17PCDD/Fs concentrations were in the range of 66.6-142,834 pg/g dw (5.6-17,021 pg WHO2005-TEQ/g dw) in 19 soil samples after digestion with aqua regia for 6 h. Sigma 17PCDD/Fs concentration was significantly and positively correlated with soil organic carbon content (R-2 = 0.89; p < 0.01). Compared with cellulose and lignin, humic acid served as an important organic matter component that was converted to PCDD/Fs during soil digestion. Strong oxidation and production of reactive chlorine by aqua regia may be the key factors in the formation of PCDD/Fs. The yearly emission of PCDD/Fs due to digestion with strong acids by the inspection and testing industry was estimated to be 83.8 g TEQ in China in 2021 based on the highest level, which was similar to 0.9% of the total dioxin inventory in China. Great attention should be paid to unexpected dioxin formation during digestion processes considering the potential risk of release from laboratories and enterprises.

  • Impact of Amine Additives on Perovskite Precursor Aging : A Case Study of Light-Emitting Diodes
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: The Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1948-7185. ; 12:25, s. 5836-5843
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Amines are widely employed as additives for improving the performance of metal halide perovskite optoelectronic devices. However, amines are well-known for their high chemical reactivity, the impact of which has yet to receive enough attention from the perovskite light-emitting diode community. Here, by investigating an unusual positive aging effect of CH3NH3I/CsI/PbI2 precursor solutions as an example, we reveal that amines gradually undergo N-formylation in perovskite precursors over time. This reaction is initialized by hydrolysis of dimethylformamide in the acidic chemical environment. Further investigations suggest that the reaction products collectively impact perovskite crystallization and eventually lead to significantly enhanced external quantum efficiency values, increasing from similar to 2% for fresh solutions to greater than or similar to 12% for aged ones. While this case study provides a positive aging effect, a negative aging effect is possible in other perovksite systems. Our findings pave the way for more reliable and reproducible device fabrication and call for further attention to underlying chemical reactions within the perovskite inks once amine additives are included.

  • A window–space-directed assembly strategy for the construction of supertetrahedron-based zeolitic mesoporous metal–organic frameworks with ultramicroporous apertures for selective gas adsorption
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Chemical Science. - : Royal Society of Chemistry. - 2041-6520 .- 2041-6539. ; 12:16, s. 5767-5773
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite their scarcity due to synthetic challenges, supertetrahedron-based metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) possess intriguing architectures, diverse functionalities, and superb properties that make them in‑demand materials. Employing a new window–space-directed assembly strategy, a family of mesoporous zeolitic MOFs have been constructed herein from corner-shared supertetrahedra based on homometallic or heterometallic trimers [M3(OH/O)(COO)6] (M3 = Co3, Ni3 or Co2Ti). These MOFs consisted of close-packed truncated octahedral cages possessing a sodalite topology and large β-cavity mesoporous cages (~22 Å diameter) connected by ultramicroporous apertures (~5.6 Å diameter). Notably, the supertetrahedron-based sodalite topology MOF composed with the Co2Ti trimer exhibited high thermal and chemical stability as well as the ability to efficiently separate acetylene (C2H2) from carbon dioxide (CO2).

  • Gradient Heating Epitaxial Growth Gives Well Lattice-Matched Mo2C-Mo2N Heterointerfaces that Boost Both Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution and Water Vapor Splitting
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Angewandte Chemie International Edition. - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 1433-7851 .- 1521-3773. ; 61:47
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An optimized approach to producing lattice-matched heterointerfaces for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution has not yet been reported. Herein, we present the synthesis of lattice-matched Mo2C-Mo2N heterostructures using a gradient heating epitaxial growth method. The well lattice-matched heterointerface of Mo2C-Mo2N generates near-zero hydrogen-adsorption free energy and facilitates water dissociation in acid and alkaline media. The lattice-matched Mo2C-Mo2N heterostructures have low overpotentials of 73 mV and 80 mV at 10 mA cm(-2) in acid and alkaline solutions, respectively, comparable to commercial Pt/C. A novel photothermal-electrocatalytic water vapor splitting device using the lattice-matched Mo2C-Mo2N heterostructure as a hydrogen evolution electrocatalyst displays a competitive cell voltage for electrocatalytic water splitting.

  • Bidirectional optical signal transmission between two identical devices using perovskite diodes
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: NATURE ELECTRONICS. - : NATURE PUBLISHING GROUP. - 2520-1131. ; 3:3, s. 156-164
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A solution-processed perovskite diode that functions as both optical transmitter and receiver can be used to build a monolithic pulse sensor and a bidirectional optical communication system. The integration of optical signal generation and reception into one device-thus allowing a bidirectional optical signal transmission between two identical devices-is of value in the development of miniaturized and integrated optoelectronic devices. However, conventional solution-processable semiconductors have intrinsic material and design limitations that prevent them from being used to create such devices with a high performance. Here we report an efficient solution-processed perovskite diode that is capable of working in both emission and detection modes. The device can be switched between modes by changing the bias direction, and it exhibits light emission with an external quantum efficiency of over 21% and a light detection limit on a subpicowatt scale. The operation speed for both functions can reach tens of megahertz. Benefiting from the small Stokes shift of perovskites, our diodes exhibit a high specific detectivity (more than 2 x 10(12) Jones) at its peak emission (~804 nm), which allows an optical signal exchange between two identical diodes. To illustrate the potential of the dual-functional diode, we show that it can be used to create a monolithic pulse sensor and a bidirectional optical communication system.

  • Recent Advances in Oxidation Stable Chemistry of 2D MXenes
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Advanced Materials. - : Wiley-VCH Verlagsgesellschaft. - 0935-9648 .- 1521-4095. ; 34:13
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As an emerging star of 2D nanomaterials, 2D transition metal carbides and nitrides, named MXenes, present a large potential in various research areas owing to their intrinsic multilayer structure and intriguing physico-chemical properties. However, the fabrication and application of functional MXene-based devices still remain challenging as they are prone to oxidative degradation under ambient environment. Within this review, the preparation methods of MXenes focusing on the recent investigations on their thermal structure-stability relationships in inert, oxidizing, and aqueous environments are systematically introduced. Moreover, the key factors that affect the oxidation of MXenes, such as, atmosphere, temperature, composition, microstructure, and aqueous environment, are reviewed. Based on different scenarios, strategies for avoiding or delaying the oxidation of MXenes are proposed to encourage the utilization of MXenes in complicated environments, especially at high temperature. Furthermore, the chemistry of MXene-derived oxides is analyzed, which can offer perspectives on the further design and fabrication of novel 2D composites with the unique structures of MXenes being preserved.

  • Effects of short-term motor training on accuracy and precision of simple jaw and finger movements after orthodontic treatment and orthognathic surgery : A case-control study
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Oral Rehabilitation. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 1365-2842. ; 50:8, s. 635-643
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Orthognathic surgery has been performed with increasing frequency for the treatment of severe malocclusion, yet the postsurgical neuromuscular recovery of patients has been inadequately studied.OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of short-term and simple jaw motor training on accuracy and precision of jaw motor control in patients following orthodontic treatment and orthognathic surgery.METHODS: ) to describe the motor performance. Furthermore, the changes in amplitude before and after training were measured in percentage.RESULTS: of simple jaw and finger movements significantly decreased after motor training (p ≤ .018) in all groups. The relative changes in finger movements were higher than jaw movements (p < .001) but with no differences among the groups (p ≥ .247).CONCLUSION: Both accuracy and precision of simple jaw and finger movements improved after short-term motor training in all three groups, demonstrating the inherent potential for optimization of novel motor tasks. Finger movements improved more than jaw movements but with no differences between groups, suggesting that changes in occlusion and craniofacial morphology are not associated with impaired neuroplasticity or physiological adaptability of jaw motor function.

  • The deubiquitinase OTUB1 augments NF-κB-dependent immune responses in dendritic cells in infection and inflammation by stabilizing UBC13
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Cellular & Molecular Immunology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1672-7681 .- 2042-0226. ; 18, s. 1512-1527
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Dendritic cells (DCs) are indispensable for defense against pathogens but may also contribute to immunopathology. Activation of DCs upon the sensing of pathogens by Toll-like receptors (TLRs) is largely mediated by pattern recognition receptor/nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-kappa B) signaling and depends on the appropriate ubiquitination of the respective signaling molecules. However, the ubiquitinating and deubiquitinating enzymes involved and their interactions are only incompletely understood. Here, we reveal that the deubiquitinase OTU domain, ubiquitin aldehyde binding 1 (OTUB1) is upregulated in DCs upon murine Toxoplasmagondii infection and lipopolysaccharide challenge. Stimulation of DCs with the TLR11/12 ligand T. gondii profilin and the TLR4 ligand lipopolysaccharide induced an increase in NF-kappa B activation in OTUB1-competent cells, resulting in elevated interleukin-6 (IL-6), IL-12, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF) production, which was also observed upon the specific stimulation of TLR2, TLR3, TLR7, and TLR9. Mechanistically, OTUB1 promoted NF-kappa B activity in DCs by K48-linked deubiquitination and stabilization of the E2-conjugating enzyme UBC13, resulting in increased K63-linked ubiquitination of IRAK1 (IL-1 receptor-associated kinase 1) and TRAF6 (TNF receptor-associated factor 6). Consequently, DC-specific deletion of OTUB1 impaired the production of cytokines, in particular IL-12, by DCs over the first 2 days of T. gondii infection, resulting in the diminished production of protective interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) by natural killer cells, impaired control of parasite replication, and, finally, death from chronic T.encephalitis, all of which could be prevented by low-dose IL-12 treatment in the first 3 days of infection. In contrast, impaired OTUB1-deficient DC activation and cytokine production by OTUB1-deficient DCs protected mice from lipopolysaccharide-induced immunopathology. Collectively, these findings identify OTUB1 as a potent novel regulator of DCs during infectious and inflammatory diseases.

  • 8-Oxoguanine targeted by 8-oxoguanine DNA glycosylase 1 (OGG1) is central to fibrogenic gene activation upon lung injury
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nucleic Acids Research. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0305-1048 .- 1362-4962. ; 51:3, s. 1087-1102
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are implicated in epithelial cell-state transition and deposition of extracellular matrix upon airway injury. Of the many cellular targets of ROS, oxidative DNA modification is a major driving signal. However, the role of oxidative DNA damage in modulation profibrotic processes has not been fully delineated. Herein, we report that oxidative DNA base lesions, 8-oxoG, complexed with 8-oxoguanine DNA glycosylase 1 (OGG1) functions as a pioneer factor, contributing to transcriptional reprogramming within airway epithelial cells. We show that TGFβ1-induced ROS increased 8-oxoG levels in open chromatin, dynamically reconfigure the chromatin state. OGG1 complexed with 8-oxoG recruits transcription factors, including phosphorylated SMAD3, to pro-fibrotic gene promoters thereby facilitating gene activation. Moreover, 8-oxoG levels are elevated in lungs of mice subjected to TGFβ1-induced injury. Pharmacologic targeting of OGG1 with the selective small molecule inhibitor of 8-oxoG binding, TH5487, abrogates fibrotic gene expression and remodeling in this model. Collectively, our study implicates that 8-oxoG substrate-specific binding by OGG1 is a central modulator of transcriptional regulation in response to tissue repair.
