  • Inclusive V-0 production cross sections from 920 GeV fixed target proton-nucleus collisions
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044. ; 29:2, s. 181-190
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Inclusive differential cross sections dsigma(pA)/dx(F) and dsigma(pA)/dp(t)(2) for the production of K-S(0), Lambda, and (&ULambda;) over bar particles are measured at HERA in proton-induced reactions on C, Al, Ti, and W targets. The incident beam energy is 920 GeV, corresponding to roots = 41.6 GeV in the proton-nucleon system. The ratios of differential cross sections dsigma(pA)(K-S(0))/dsigma(pA)(Lambda) and dsigma(pA)((&ULambda;) over bar)/dsigma(pA) (Lambda) are measured to be 6.2 +/- 0.5 and 0.66 +/- 0.07, respectively, for x(F) approximate to -0.06. No significant dependence upon the target material is observed. Within errors, the slopes of the transverse momentum distributions da,Ald t also show no significant dependence upon the target material. The dependence of the extrapolated total cross sections sigma(pA) on the atomic mass A of the target material is discussed, and the deduced cross sections per nucleon sigma(pN) are compared with results obtained at other energies.

  • Measurement of the b(b)over-bar production cross section in 920 GeV fixed-target proton-nucleus collisions
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044. ; 26:3, s. 345-355
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using the HERA-B detector, the b (b) over bar production cross section has been measured in 920 GeV proton collisions on carbon and titanium targets. The b (b) over bar production was tagged via inclusive bottom quark decays into J/psi by exploiting the longitudinal separation of J/psi --> l(+)l(-) decay vertices from the primary proton-nucleus interaction. Both e(+)e(-) and mu(+)mu(-) channels have been reconstructed and the combined analysis yields the cross section sigma(b (b) over bar) = 32(-12)(+14)(stat) (+6)(-7)(sys) nb/nucleon.

  • Electrospray and tandem mass spectrometry in biochemistry
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: The Biochemical journal. - : Portland Press Ltd.. - 0264-6021 .- 1470-8728. ; 355:Pt 3, s. 545-561
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Over the last 20 years, biological MS has changed out of all recognition. This is primarily due to the development in the 1980s of ‘soft ionization’ methods that permit the ionization and vaporization of large, polar, and thermally labile biomolecules. These developments in ionization mode have driven the design and manufacture of smaller and cheaper mass analysers, making the mass spectrometer a routine instrument in the biochemistry laboratory today. In the present review the revolutionary ‘soft ionization’ methods will be discussed with particular reference to electrospray. The mass analysis of ions will be described, and the concept of tandem MS introduced. Where appropriate, examples of the application of MS in biochemistry will be provided. Although the present review will concentrate on the MS of peptides/proteins and lipids, all classes of biomolecules can be analysed, and much excellent work has been done in the fields of carbohydrate and nucleic acid biochemistry.

  • Characterization and cardiovascular actions of endothelin-1 and endothelin-3 from the American alligator
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: American journal of physiology. Regulatory, integrative and comparative physiology. - : American Physiological Society. - 0363-6119 .- 1522-1490. ; 282:2, s. R594-R602
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The structures and biological activities of the isoforms of endothelin (ET) in a reptile are unknown. ET-3, whose primary structure is identical to human ET-3 except for the substitution Phe4→ Tyr, and a peptide identical to human ET-1 were isolated from an extract of the lung of the alligator, Alligator mississipiensis. Bolus intravenous injections of alligator ET-3 (10, 30, and 100 pmol/kg) into anesthetized alligators produced dose-dependent decreases in systemic blood pressure (Psys) and systemic vascular resistance (Rsys) without change in heart rate (HR), systemic blood flow (Qsys), pulmonary pressure (Ppul), pulmonary vascular resistance (Rpul), or pulmonary blood flow (Qpul). At a dose of 300 pmol/kg, the initial vasodilatation was followed by an increase in Rsysand decreases in Qsysand Ppul. The response to intravenous human/alligator ET-1 (10, 30, 100, and 300 pmol/kg) was biphasic at all doses with initial decreases in Psysand Rsysbeing followed by sustained increases in these parameters. In the pulmonary circulation, ET-1 produced a dose-dependent decrease in Qpuland an increase in Rpulduring the first phase of the response but no significant change during the second phase. There was no change in HR in response to ET-1. The vasodilatator action of arginine, but not ET-1, was attenuated by Nω-nitro-l-arginine methyl ester, indicating that the effect of the peptide is probably not mediated through increased synthesis of nitric oxide. The data demonstrate that the structure of the ET isoforms has been strongly conserved during the evolution of vertebrates but that cardiovascular actions differ significantly between the alligator and mammals, especially in the magnitude and duration of the hypotensive response.

  • Nonradiative centers in InAs dots grown on GaAs substrates for 1.3 mu m emission
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters A. - : Elsevier Science B.V., Amsterdam.. - 0375-9601 .- 1873-2429. ; 315:02-Jan, s. 150-155
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nonradiative centers in InAs dots grown on GaAs substrates are investigated in this study. The emission from InAs dots close to 1.3 mum is monitored under different excitation densities and different excitation energy. The used samples were also treated by hydrogen plasma in order to suppress the nonradiative centers. The purpose of this work is to study how nonradiative centers influence the efficiency of InAs dots emission and whether the nonradiative centers can be reduced. Our results clearly illustrate that there indeed exist nonradiative centers, both at the interface between the InAs dots and surrounding layers and in the GaAs layers, which can be suppressed by H-treatments. A technique to estimate relative amount of nonradiative centers is also discussed.

  • Strong enhancement of the photoluminescence-efficiency from InAs quantum dots
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Physics. - : American Institute of Physics. - 0021-8979 .- 1089-7550. ; 93:3, s. 1533-1536
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • InAs quantum dots (QDs) have been investigated using optical spectroscopy, in order to understand the experimental observation of strong enhancement of their photoluminescence efficiency. When a tunneling barrier is introduced between the, InAs layer and the GaAs cap layer, the intensity of the InAs QD emission increases by more than an order of magnitude at the excitation density of 60 W/cm(2). The enhancement of the optical recombination efficiency is due to the suppression of the nonradiative transitions in the wetting layer. The strong enhancement of the InAs emission can lead to an increase in the optical gain of the InAs laser structure
