  • Structural and photoluminescence study of TiO2 layer with self-assembled Si1-xGex nanoislands
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 0021-8979 .- 1089-7550. ; 128:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study the surface morphology and growth process of SiGe nanoislands on TiO2 films, deposited over Si (001) substrates by high power impulse magnetron sputtering, followed by varying annealing parameters (i.e., 500-750 degrees C for 30min to 20h). Structural analysis was performed by atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and grazing incidence x-ray diffraction. Two structural schemes were taken into consideration, i.e., SiGe grown over pre-annealed TiO2 (scheme I) and as-grown TiO2 (scheme II). Photoluminescence (PL) study of the structures revealed spectral features comprised of multiple peak features related to localized and surface states within the oxide layer, along with a peak due to the SiGe nano-islands. It was observed that the spectral feature and intensity depend on the surface morphology and the crystallinity of the underlying TiO2 layer. The structures were subjected to low temperature PL measurements, and the spectra were de-convoluted in order to validate the origin of the obtained spectra. Structural analysis revealed that pre-annealing the underlying polycrystalline TiO2 film, prior to deposition of SiGe layers (scheme I), facilitates the formation of SiGe nanoislands, preferably along the grain boundaries (due to their higher interfacial energy). In comparison, for the case of SiGe deposited over as-grown TiO2 (scheme II), annealing of the structure resulted in random distribution of nanoislands across the entire film. The size of the nanoislands grew with increased annealing time up until the point they started to coalesce, forming discontinuous SiGe layers and eventually leading to melting of the layer.

  • Processability of mesoporous materials in fused deposition modeling for drug delivery of a model thermolabile drug
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Pharmaceutics. - : Elsevier. - 2590-1567. ; 5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The incorporation of drug-loaded mesoporous materials in dosage forms prepared with fused deposition modeling (FDM) has shown the potential to solve challenges relating to additive manufacturing techniques, such as the stability of poorly-soluble drugs in the amorphous state. However, the addition of these non-melting mesoporous materials significantly affects the mechanical properties of the filament used in FDM, which in turn affects the printability of the feedstock material. Therefore, in this study a full-factorial experimental design was utilized to investigate different processing parameters of the hot melt extrusion process, their effect on various mechanical properties and the potential correlation with the filaments' printability. The thermolabile, poorly-soluble drug ibuprofen was utilized as a model drug to assess the potential of two mesoporous materials, Mesoporous Magnesium Carbonate (MMC) and a silica-based material (MCM-41), to thermally protect the loaded drug. Factorial and principal components analysis displayed a correlation between non-printable MCM-41 filaments and their mechanical properties where printable filaments had a maximum stress >7.5 MPa and a Young's modulus >83 MPa. For MMC samples there was no clear correlation, which was in large part attributed to the filaments' inconsistencies and imperfections. Finally, both mesoporous materials displayed a thermal protective feature, as the decomposition due to the thermal degradation of a significant portion of the thermolabile drug was shifted to higher temperatures post-loading. This highlights the potential capability of such a system to be implemented for thermosensitive drugs in FDM applications.

  • The SPARC Water Vapor Assessment II: assessment of satellite measurements of upper tropospheric humidity
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Atmospheric Measurement Techniques. - : Copernicus GmbH. - 1867-1381 .- 1867-8548. ; 15:11, s. 3377-3400
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nineteen limb-viewing data sets (occultation, passive thermal, and UV scattering) and two nadir upper tropospheric humidity (UTH) data sets are intercompared and also compared to frost-point hygrometer balloon sondes. The upper troposphere considered here covers the pressure range from 300-100 hPa. UTH is a challenging measurement, because concentrations vary between 2-1000 ppmv (parts per million by volume), with sharp changes in vertical gradients near the tropopause. Cloudiness in this region also makes the measurement challenging. The atmospheric temperature is also highly variable ranging from 180-250 K. The assessment of satellite-measured UTH is based on coincident comparisons with balloon frost-point hygrometer sondes, multi-month mapped comparisons, zonal mean time series comparisons, and coincident satellite-to-satellite comparisons. While the satellite fields show similar features in maps and time series, quantitatively they can differ by a factor of 2 in concentration, with strong dependencies on the amount of UTH. Additionally, time-lag response-corrected Vaisala RS92 radiosondes are compared to satellites and the frost-point hygrometer measurements. In summary, most satellite data sets reviewed here show on average similar to 30 % agreement amongst themselves and frost-point data but with an additional similar to 30 % variability about the mean bias. The Vaisala RS92 sonde, even with a time-lag correction, shows poor behavior for pressures less than 200 hPa.

  • Wideband spatial channel model for MIMO systems at 5 GHz in indoor and outdoor environments
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: IEEE Vehicular Technology Conference. ; , s. 2916-2921
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This work presents a spatial channel model developed within the EC WINNER1 project. The channel model is mainly based on double-directional measurement campaigns carried out in the 5 GHz ISM 2 band with bandwidths of up to 120 MHz. The model is based on a unified structure for indoor and outdoor environment. It covers 6 different propagation scenarios, namely indoor small office, indoor hall, urban microcell, urban macrocell, suburban macrocell, and rural environment. Both line-of-sight (LOS) and non-line-of-sight (NLOS) propagation conditions are modeled.

  • Taste responsiveness to two steviol glycosides in three species of nonhuman primates
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Current Zoology. - : Oxford University Press. - 1674-5507 .- 2396-9814. ; 64:1, s. 63-68
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Primates have been found to differ widely in their taste perception and studies suggest that a co-evolution between plant species bearing a certain taste substance and primate species feeding on these plants may contribute to such between-species differences. Considering that only platyrrhine primates, but not catarrhine or prosimian primates, share an evolutionary history with the neotropical plant Stevia rebaudiana, we assessed whether members of these three primate taxa differ in their ability to perceive and/or in their sensitivity to its two quantitatively predominant sweet-tasting substances. We found that not only neotropical black-handed spider monkeys, but also paleotropical black-and-white ruffed lemurs and Western chimpanzees are clearly able to perceive stevioside and rebaudioside A. Using a two-bottle preference test of short duration, we found that Ateles geoffroyi preferred concentrations as low as 0.05 mM stevioside and 0.01 mM rebaudioside A over tap water. Taste preference thresholds of Pan troglodytes were similar to those of the spider monkeys, with 0.05 mM for stevioside and 0.03 mM for rebaudioside A, whereas Varecia variegata was slightly less sensitive with a threshold value of 0.1 mM for both substances. Thus, all three primate species are, similar to human subjects, clearly more sensitive to both steviol glycosides compared to sucrose. Only the spider monkeys displayed concentration-response curves with both stevioside and rebaudioside A which can best be described as an inverted U-shaped function suggesting that Ateles geoffroyi, similar to human subjects, may perceive a bitter side taste at higher concentrations of these substances. Taken together, the results of the present study do not support the notion that a co-evolution between plant and primate species may account for between-species differences in taste perception of steviol glycosides.

  • Monitoring Ara h 1, 2 and 3-sIgE and sIgG4 antibodies in peanut allergic children receiving oral rush immunotherapy
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Pediatric Allergy and Immunology. - : Wiley. - 0905-6157 .- 1399-3038. ; 25:4, s. 323-328
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The aim was to study the clinical efficacy and safety of rush oral immunotherapy (OIT) for severe peanut-allergic children and to measure the antibody responses. Methods: Eighteen Japanese children were enrolled after a positive double-blind, placebo-controlled food challenge (DBPCFC). The patients ingested peanuts up to 3-5 times a day every 30 min, increasing the dose by 20% every time. The goal dose was 3.5-7 g. IgE, IgG, and IgG4 antibody levels to peanut, and peanut allergen components were measured during up to 3 yr of maintenance treatment. Results: Two children dropped out due to side effects. Sixteen patients (14 boys and two girls, median: 9 yr range: 5-14 yr) achieved the goal dose after a median of 11 days (range: 4-19 days). Their median threshold dose at DBPCFC was 0.20 g (range: 0.015-1.0 g). All were sensitized to Ara h 2. Fourteen of them had a history of previous anaphylaxis. In total, 173 adverse events were observed during the treatment (27% of the total ingestions) of which 74 needed medications. The median IgE, IgG, and IgG4 antibody levels to peanut increased during rush OIT. The IgG4 levels were high during the whole maintenance phase. IgE and IgG4 antibodies to Ara h 2 dominated the serological response during the treatment. Conclusions: The present rush OIT protocol for children with severe peanut allergy was effective and relatively safe. A sustained Ara h 2-specific IgG4 antibody response characterized the treatment.
