  • Alcohol, tobacco and breast cancer - collaborative reanalysis of individual data from 53 epidemiological studies, including 58515 women with breast cancer and 95067 women without the disease
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: British Journal of Cancer. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1532-1827 .- 0007-0920. ; 87, s. 1234-45
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Alcohol and tobacco consumption are closely correlated and published results on their association with breast cancer have not always allowed adequately for confounding between these exposures. Over 80% of the relevant information worldwide on alcohol and tobacco consumption and breast cancer were collated, checked and analysed centrally. Analyses included 58515 women with invasive breast cancer and 95067 controls from 53 studies. Relative risks of breast cancer were estimated, after stratifying by study, age, parity and, where appropriate, women's age when their first child was born and consumption of alcohol and tobacco. The average consumption of alcohol reported by controls from developed countries was 6.0 g per day, i.e. about half a unit/drink of alcohol per day, and was greater in ever-smokers than never-smokers, (8.4 g per day and 5.0 g per day, respectively). Compared with women who reported drinking no alcohol, the relative risk of breast cancer was 1.32 (1.19 - 1.45, P < 0.00001) for an intake of 35 - 44 g per day alcohol, and 1.46 (1.33 - 1.61, P < 0.00001) for greater than or equal to 45 g per day alcohol. The relative risk of breast cancer increased by 7.1% (95% CI 5.5-8.7%; P<0.00001) for each additional 10 g per day intake of alcohol, i.e. for each extra unit or drink of alcohol consumed on a daily basis. This increase was the same in ever-smokers and never-smokers (7.1 % per 10 g per day, P < 0.00001, in each group). By contrast, the relationship between smoking and breast cancer was substantially confounded by the effect of alcohol. When analyses were restricted to 22 255 women with breast cancer and 40 832 controls who reported drinking no alcohol, smoking was not associated with breast cancer (compared to never-smokers, relative risk for ever-smokers= 1.03, 95% CI 0.98 - 1.07, and for current smokers=0.99, 0.92 - 1.05). The results for alcohol and for tobacco did not vary substantially across studies, study designs, or according to 15 personal characteristics of the women; nor were the findings materially confounded by any of these factors. If the observed relationship for alcohol is causal, these results suggest that about 4% of the breast cancers in developed countries are attributable to alcohol. In developing countries, where alcohol consumption among controls averaged only 0.4 g per day, alcohol would have a negligible effect on the incidence of breast cancer. In conclusion, smoking has little or no independent effect on the risk of developing breast cancer; the effect of alcohol on breast cancer needs to be interpreted in the context of its beneficial effects, in moderation, on cardiovascular disease and its harmful effects on cirrhosis and cancers of the mouth, larynx, oesophagus and liver. • Development of an ombrotrophic peat bog (low ash) reference material for the determination of elemental concentrations
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Journal of Environmental Monitoring. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 1464-0325 .- 1464-0333. ; 6:493, s. 501-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Given the increasing interest in using peat bogs as archives of atmospheric metal deposition, the lack of validated sample preparation methods and suitable certified reference materials has hindered not only the quality assurance of the generated analytical data but also the interpretation and comparison of peat core metal profiles from different laboratories in the international community. Reference materials play an important role in the evaluation of the accuracy of analytical results and are essential parts of good laboratory practice. An ombrotrophic peat bog reference material has been developed by 14 laboratories from nine countries in an inter-laboratory comparison between February and October 2002. The material has been characterised for both acid-extractable and total concentrations of a range of elements, including Al, As, Ca, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, P, Pb, Ti, V and Zn. The steps involved in the production of the reference material (i.e. collection and preparation, homogeneity and stability studies, and certification) are described in detail.

  • XPS and XAS investigation of condensed and adsorbed n-octane on a Cu(110) surface
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Journal of electron spectroscopy and related phenomena. - : Elsevier. - 0368-2048. ; 128:2-3, s. 179-191
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The electronic structure of n-octane adsorbed on Cu(110) is studied by using X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) in combination with cluster model calculations in the framework of density functional theory (DFT). The molecule is found to be well oriented on the surface, which is seen from the high degree of XAS dichroism. Saturated hydrocarbons are commonly considered to physisorb on metals such as Cu(110), but still the C 1s XAS spectra reveal large changes in the electronic structure of the adsorbed octane relative to the free molecule. We find that the XAS resonances corresponding to the molecular Rydberg-valence states are strongly quenched upon adsorption and that there is a significant hybridization of the molecular valence orbitals with the metal bands. In addition to a precise interpretation of the XAS spectra, we present details on the molecular orbital structure of the adsorbed octane molecule. We also discuss shifts in the relative binding energies of the chemically inequivalent carbon atoms in octane upon adsorption, which lead to a narrower XPS spectrum for the adsorbate than the condensed phase spectrum due to the existence of a new relaxation channel.

  • Orbital rehybridization in n-octane adsorbed on Cu(110)
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Journal of Chemical Physics. - : American Institute of Physics. - 0021-9606. ; 118:8, s. 3782-3789
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have investigated the local electronic structure of n-octane adsorbed on the Cu(110) surface using symmetry-resolved x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and x-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) in combination with density functional theory (DFT) spectrum calculations. We found new adsorption-induced states in the XE spectra, which we assign to interaction between the bonding CH orbitals and the metal surface. By performing a systematic investigation of the influence of different structural parameters on the XA and XE spectra, we conclude that the molecular geometry is significantly distorted relative to the gas-phase structure. The bonding to the surface leads to a strengthening of the carbon–carbon bonds and a weakening of the carbon–hydrogen bonds, consistent with a rehybridization of the carbons from sp3 to sp2.8. ©2003 American Institute of Physics.

  • Long-term clinical effects of a peritoneal dialysis fluid with less glucose degradation products
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Kidney Int. - : Elsevier BV. ; 59:1, s. 348-357
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Glucose degradation products (GDPs) are cytotoxic in vitro and potentially toxic in vivo during peritoneal dialysis (PD). We are presenting the results of a two-year randomized clinical trial of a new PD fluid, produced in a two-compartment bag and designed to minimize heat-induced glucose degradation while producing a near neutral pH. The effects of the new fluid over two years of treatment on membrane transport characteristics, ultrafiltration (UF) capacity, and effluent markers of peritoneal membrane integrity were investigated and compared with those obtained during treatment with a standard solution. DESIGN: A two-group parallel design with 80 continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis patients was used. The patients were randomly assigned to either the new fluid (N = 40) or to a conventional one (N = 40), and were stratified with respect to age, diabetes, and time on PD. Peritoneal transport characteristics were assessed by the Personal Dialysis Capacity (PDCtrade mark) test at 1, 6, 12, 18, and 24 months after inclusion and by weighing the overnight bag daily. Infusion pain and handling were evaluated using a questionnaire. Peritoneal mesothelial and interstitial integrity were evaluated by analyzing overnight effluent dialysate concentrations of CA 125, hyaluronan (HA), procollagen-1-C-terminal peptide (PICP), and procollagen-3-N-terminal peptide (PIIINP) at 1, 6, 12, 18, and 24 months. RESULTS: The handling of the new two-compartment bag was considered easy, and there were no indications of increased discomfort with the new system. Furthermore, no changes in peritoneal fluid or solute transport characteristics were observed during the study period for either fluid, and neither were there any differences with regard to peritonitis incidence. However, significantly higher dialysate CA 125 (73 +/- 41 vs. 25 +/- 18 U/mL), PICP (387 +/- 163 vs. 244 +/- 81 ng/mL), and PIIINP (50 +/- 24 vs. 29 +/- 13 ng/mL) and significantly lower concentrations of HA (395 +/- 185 vs. 530 +/- 298 ng/mL) were observed in the overnight effluent during treatment with the new fluid. CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that the new fluid with a higher pH and less GDPs is safe and easy to use and has no negative effects on either the frequency of peritonitis or peritoneal transport characteristics as compared with conventional ones. Our results indicate that the new solution causes less mesothelial and interstitial damage than conventional ones; that is, it may be considered more biocompatible than a number of conventional PD solutions currently in use.

  • Geometric structure and chemical bonding of acetylene adsorbed on Cu(110)
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Surface Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 0039-6028 .- 1879-2758. ; 565:2-3, s. 206-222
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The chemical bonding and geometric structure of acetylene adsorbed on Cu(I 10) is analyzed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) in combination with density functional theory (DFT) total energy geometry optimizations and spectral calculations. XPS reveals two different adsorbed species at liquid nitrogen temperature. The molecular alignment is deduced from angle-resolved XAS, revealing that in one site the molecules are aligned with the C-C axis along the [0 0 1] direction and in the other site with an average angle of 35degrees to the Cu rows. The position of the shape resonance is used to deduce a C-C bond length of 1.35 Angstrom, which is close to the values obtained from the DFT geometry optimizations. XES reveals strong sigma-pi mixing and new occupied states close to the Fermi level, originating from the out-of-plane pi* orbital, which becomes occupied upon adsorption in agreement with the Dewar-Chatt-Duncanson model of the bonding.
