  • Origin of octahedral tilting in orthorhombic perovskites
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 66:9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The adopted crystal structure of the ABO(3) perovskites is determined by the balance between the interaction of the semicore states of the A and B atoms and oxygen ions. Topological considerations show that the structural setup always stabilizes the cubic phase at large pressures, while small or negative pressures favor nonvanishing octahedral tiltings. As an example, we show that the structural distortion in CaSiO3 perovskite is slightly depressed with hydrostatic pressure, but it increases significantly with increasing volume.

  • Multicriteria optimization to develop cost-effective pes-schemes to restore multiple environmental benefits in the Brazilian Atlantic forest
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Ecosystem Services. - : Elsevier BV. - 2212-0416 .- 2212-0416. ; 60
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Understanding the cost-effectiveness of restoration initiatives is critical for their successful implementation. In this context, this study presents a new approach to investigating the cost-effectiveness of different forest landscape restoration strategies for achieving multiple restoration goals. The approach is based on an optimization model that allocates forest restoration to maximize three environmental benefits (biodiversity conservation, carbon stock increase, and soil loss reduction) while minimizing the cost. We explore scenarios based on the Brazilian Forest Code and the National Policy for Payment for Ecosystem Services. Our optimization approach simultaneously achieves high levels of multiple environmental benefits - more than 90% of the maximum possible biodiversity, carbon, and soil in a cost-effective manner for all scenarios. Variation among the scenarios in the absolute performance concerning the three objectives was small (within 2.5%) compared to variation in costs (up to 19.4%). These results reinforce the importance of quantifying trade-offs among objectives to a better understanding of the cost-effectiveness of restoration initiatives before their implementation.

  • Highly stable, mesoporous mixed lanthanum–cerium oxides with tailored structure and reducibility
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Science. - : Springer. - 0022-2461 .- 1573-4803. ; 46:9, s. 2928-2937
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Pure and mixed lanthanum and cerium oxides were synthesized via a reverse microemulsion-templated route. This approach yields highly homogeneous and phase-stable mixed oxides with high surface areas across the entire range of La:Ce ratios from pure lanthana to pure ceria. Surprisingly, all mixed oxides show the fluorite crystal structure of ceria, even for lanthanum contents as high as 90%. Varying the La:Ce ratio not only allows tailoring of the oxide morphology (lattice parameter, pore structure, particle size, and surface area), but also results in a fine-tuning of the reducibility of the oxide which can be explained by the creation of oxygen vacancies in the ceria lattice upon La addition. Such finely controlled syntheses, which enable the formation of stable, homogeneous mixed oxides across the entire composition range, open the path towards functional tailoring of oxide materials, such as rational catalyst design via fine-tuning of redox activity.

  • Infrared spectroscopy of two-dimensional electron systems
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal: Special Topics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1951-6401 .- 1951-6355. ; 228:3, s. 669-673
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • © 2019, EDP Sciences, Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature. We have used grazing-angle infrared spectroscopy with polarized radiation to detect the Berreman effect (BE) in the two-dimensional electron systems (2DES) which form spontaneously at two interfaces: one between an amorphous film LaAlO3 and its SrTiO3 substrate (LAO/STO), and another at the interface between the topological insulator (TI) Bi2Se3 and its sapphire substrate. In both systems we have thus extracted the 2DES parameters at different temperatures. In the quasi-2DES under amorphous LAO, the surface density ns is higher than under crystalline LAO, while the mobility is nearly the same and the thickness d is 7 nm. In ultrapure Bi2Se3 on sapphire, preliminary data provided d

  • Reduced Aerodynamic Drag for Truck-Trailer Configurations Using Parametrized CFD Studies
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: ASME 2012 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition, Volume 7: Fluids and Heat Transfer Parts A, B, C, and D. - New York, NY, USA : American Society of Mechanical Engineers. - 9780791845233 ; , s. 1213-1220
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the presented work, two studies using ComputationalFluid Dynamics (CFD) have been conducted on a generictruck-like model with and without a trailer unit at a speed of 80km/h. The purpose is to evaluate drag reduction possibilitiesusing externally fitted devices. A first study deals with a flapplaced at the back of a rigid truck and inclined at seven differentangles with two lengths. Results show that it is possible todecrease drag by 4%. In a second study, the flap has been fittedon the tractor and trailer units of a truck-trailer combination.Four settings were surveyed for this investigation, one of whichproved to decrease drag by up to 15%. A last configurationwhere the gap between the units has been closed has also beenevaluated. This configuration offers a 15% decrease in drag.Adding a flap to the closed gap configuration decreases drag by18%. New means of reducing aerodynamic drag of heavy-duty(HD) vehicles will be important in the foreseeable future inorder to improve the fuel economy. The possibilities of reducingdrag are prevalent using conceptual design.
