  • EuroTraining courses of microsystems technology and Nanotechnology for Electronics
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: 2010 IEEE 16th International Symposium for Design and Technology of Electronics Packages, SIITME 2010, Pitesti, 23-26 September 2010. - 9781424481248 ; :Article number 5653755,, s. 73-78
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • EuroTraining is the part of the EC initiated Europractice service, which aims to stimulate the wider exploitation of state-of-the-art micro/nano electronics and microsystem technologies by the European industry and academia. EuroTraining invites engineers and scientists from companies, SMEs, universities and institutes to upgrade their knowledge by professional and awareness courses entitled "Design Your Own Microsystem" and "Nanotechnology for Electronics". The courses were lectured by highly qualified experts in cooperation with local scientists, whose institutes were also invited to facilitate further scientific connection between the course participants and the national institute. A large emphasis were put on multidisciplinarity, as trends point to integration, therefore, the courses have been developed for engineers coming from a very different background (electrical-, biomedical-, chemical-, mechanical engineers) and for physicists, medical doctors, chemists, etc. The courses were very successful, participants benefited much from that they have learned: refreshed and widened their knowledge, and might open new opportunities in their studies and careers.

  • Computability and complexity of unconventional computing devices
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Natural Computing Series. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. - 1619-7127. ; , s. 185-229
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • We discuss some claims that certain UCOMP devices can perform hypercomputation (compute Turing-uncomputable functions) or perform super-Turing computation (solve NP-complete problems in polynomial time). We discover that all these claims rely on the provision of one or more unphysical resources.

  • Robustness of logic gates and reconfigurability of neuromorphic switching networks
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of 2010 IEEE International Symposium on Circuits and Systems (ISCAS). - 0271-4302. - 9781424453092 ; , s. 1671-1674
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nanoparticle networks with functional molecular links that show current- voltage characteristics (IVC) with negative differential resistance (NDR) can be trained to perform XOR-AND logic gates (Husband et al. [1]; Skoldberg and Wendin [2]). In this work we investigate the robustness of the Nanocell network by removing links until desired logic gates no longer can be configured or operated within our simulation of the network. We present results for the robustness of XOR-AND configured (halfadder) Nanocells, as well as the effects of varying the IVC and NDR characteristics of the linker molecules.

  • A generic simulator for large networks of memristive elements
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Nanotechnology. - : IOP Publishing. - 1361-6528 .- 0957-4484. ; 24:38
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This work develops a generic software tool for simulation of the dynamics of sparse multi-terminal memristive networks. The simulator is coded on one platform and relatively compact for easy work-flow and future extensions. Due to its relatively small size it should be easy to transfer (re-program) it using other computer languages. Future applications of the software include studies of various information processing scenarios.

  • On Information Processing with Networks of Nano-Scale Switching Elements
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Unconventional Computing. - 1548-7199 .- 1548-7202. ; 10:5-6, s. 405-428
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Unconventional computing explores multi-scale platforms connecting molecular-scale devices into networks for the development of scalable neuromorphic architectures, often based on new materials and components with new functionalities. We review some work investigating the functionalities of locally connected networks of different types of switching elements as computational substrates. In particular, we discuss reservoir computing with networks of nonlinear nanoscale components. In usual neuromorphic paradigms, the network synaptic weights are adjusted as a result of a training/learning process. In reservoir computing, the non-linear network acts as a dynamical system mixing and spreading the input signals over a large state space, and only a readout layer is trained. We illustrate the most important concepts with a few examples, featuring memristor networks with time-dependent and history dependent resistances.

  • Cumulene molecular wire conductance from first principles
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X .- 2469-9950 .- 2469-9969. ; 81:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present first principles calculations of current-voltage characteristics (IVC) and conductance of Au(111):S-2-cumulene-S-2:Au(111) molecular wire junctions with realistic contacts. The transport properties are calculated using full self-consistent ab initio nonequilibrium Green's function density-functional theory methods under external bias. The conductance of the cumulene wires shows oscillatory behavior depending on the number of carbon atoms (double bonds). Among all conjugated oligomers, we find that cumulene wires with odd number of carbon atoms yield the highest conductance with metalliclike ballistic transport behavior. The reason is the high density of states in broad lowest unoccupied molecular orbital levels spanning the Fermi level of the electrodes. The transmission spectrum and the conductance depend only weakly on applied bias, and the IVC is nearly linear over a bias region of +/- 1 V. Cumulene wires are therefore potential candidates for metallic connections in nanoelectronic applications.

  • Interference effects in phtalocyanine controlled by H-H tautomerization: Potential two-terminal unimolecular electronic switch
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B - Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 2469-9950 .- 2469-9969. ; 84:16, s. 165437-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigate the electrical transport properties of two hydrogen tautomer configurations of phthalocyanine (H(2)Pc) connected to cumulene and gold leads. Hydrogen tautomerization affects the electronic state of H(2)Pc by switching the character of molecular orbitals with the same symmetry close to the Fermi level. The near degeneracy between the HOMO and HOMO-1 leads to pronounced interference effects, causing a large change in current for the two tautomer configurations, especially in the low-bias regime. Two types of planar junctions are considered: cumulene-H(2)Pc-cumulene and gold-H(2)Pc-gold. Both demonstrate a prominent difference in molecular conductance between ON and OFF states. In addition, junctions with gold leads show pronounced negative differential resistance (NDR) at high bias voltage, as well as weak NDR at intermediate bias.

  • Bioinspired computing with synaptic elements
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Natural Computing Series. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. - 1619-7127. ; , s. 55-79
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Unconventional computing (UCOMP) paradigms have been suggested to address and overcome a range of limitations of ordinary digital classical computers.
