  • Functional and Structural Properties of a Novel Protein and Virulence Factor (sHIP) in Streptococcus pyogenes.

    • Streptococcus pyogenes is a significant bacterial pathogen in the human population. The importance of virulence factors for the survival and colonization of S. pyogenes is well established, and many of these factors are exposed to the extracellular environment enabling bacterial interactions with the host. In the present study we quantitatively analyzed and compared S. pyogenes proteins in the growth medium of a strain that is virulent to mice, with a non-virulent strain. Particularly one of these proteins was present at significantly higher levels in stationary growth medium from the virulent strain. We determined the three-dimensional structure of the protein that showed a unique tetrameric organization composed of four helix-loop-helix motifs. Affinity pull-down mass spectrometry analysis in human plasma demonstrated that the protein interacts with histidine-rich glycoprotein (HRG), and the name sHIP (streptococcal Histidine-rich glycoprotein Interacting Protein) is therefore proposed. HRG has antibacterial activity, and when challenged by HRG, sHIP was found to rescue S. pyogenes bacteria. This and the finding that patients with invasive S. pyogenes infection respond with antibody production against sHIP, suggest a role for the protein in S. pyogenes pathogenesis.

  • Measurement of prompt J/psi and beauty hadron production cross sections at mid-rapidity in pp collisions at root s=7 TeV

    • The ALICE experiment at the LHC has studied J/psi production at mid-rapidity in pp collisions at root s = 7 TeV through its electron pair decay on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity L-int = 5.6 nb(-1). The fraction of J/psi from the decay of long-lived beauty hadrons was determined for J/psi candidates with transverse momentum p(t) > 1,3 GeV/c and rapidity vertical bar y vertical bar < 0.9. The cross section for prompt J/psi mesons, i.e. directly produced J/psi and prompt decays of heavier charmonium states such as the psi(2S) and chi(c) resonances, is sigma(prompt J/psi) (p(t) > 1.3 GeV/c, vertical bar y vertical bar < 0.9) = 8.3 +/- 0.8(stat.) +/- 1.1 (syst.)(-1.4)(+1.5) (syst. pol.) mu b. The cross section for the production of b-hadrons decaying to J/psi with p(t) > 1.3 GeV/c and vertical bar y vertical bar < 0.9 is a sigma(J/psi <- hB) (p(t) > 1.3 GeV/c, vertical bar y vertical bar < 0.9) = 1.46 +/- 0.38 (stat.)(-0.32)(+0.26) (syst.) mu b. The results are compared to QCD model predictions. The shape of the p(t) and y distributions of b-quarks predicted by perturbative QCD model calculations are used to extrapolate the measured cross section to derive the b (b) over bar pair total cross section and d sigma/dy at mid-rapidity.

  • Underlying Event measurements in pp collisions at root s=0.9 and 7 TeV with the ALICE experiment at the LHC

    • We present measurements of Underlying Event observables in pp collisions at root s = 0 : 9 and 7 TeV. The analysis is performed as a function of the highest charged-particle transverse momentum p(T),L-T in the event. Different regions are defined with respect to the azimuthal direction of the leading (highest transverse momentum) track: Toward, Transverse and Away. The Toward and Away regions collect the fragmentation products of the hardest partonic interaction. The Transverse region is expected to be most sensitive to the Underlying Event activity. The study is performed with charged particles above three different p(T) thresholds: 0.15, 0.5 and 1.0 GeV/c. In the Transverse region we observe an increase in the multiplicity of a factor 2-3 between the lower and higher collision energies, depending on the track p(T) threshold considered. Data are compared to PYTHIA 6.4, PYTHIA 8.1 and PHOJET. On average, all models considered underestimate the multiplicity and summed p(T) in the Transverse region by about 10-30%.

    • Guidelines are given for setting up and running a voltage quality monitoring programme. These guidelines are published jointly by CEER and ECRB and contain among others recommendations on the number and location of monitors, on disturbances to be monitored and indices to be calculated, on reporting of the results and on financing of the programme. It is concluded that voltage quality monitoring programs are important tools for voltage quality regulation and that all other possible applications should be kept in mind when setting up such a programme. It is also concluded that such programmes should be funded through the network tariffs; that the results should be made available regularly and that diversification of indices and methods is to be avoided.

    • Abstract BACKGROUND: New implant designs are continuously introduced to the market. It is important to evaluate and report on their clinical performance when used in everyday practice. PURPOSE: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the clinical performance of a novel hydrophilic dental implant for 1 year. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 49 patients previously treated with 102 hydrophilic dental implants (Neoss Proactive, Neoss Ltd, Harrogate, UK) were retrospectively evaluated with regard to survival rate and marginal bone loss. Fifty-four implants were installed in maxillae and 48 in mandibles to replace single teeth (n=21), to support partial bridges (n=26), total maxillary bridges (n=2), or mandibular overdentures (n=2). The majority of patients (n=37) had implants placed in healed sites without any adjunctive procedures. In 12 patients, implants were immediately placed in extraction sockets or in conjunction with maxillary sinus floor augmentation. All implant sites had been classified according to the Lekholm and Zarb index. Baseline and 1-year intraoral radiographs were used to calculate marginal bone levels and bone loss. Implant stability quotient (ISQ) measurements had been taken at placement and after 3 to 4 months of healing RESULTS: The implants became rapidly covered with blood at the first contact. One implant was lost, giving a cumulative survival rate (CSR) of 99.0% after 1 year. The marginal bone loss amounted to 0.7±0.6mm with 3.5% of the implants showing more than 2mm of bone loss and no implant more than 3mm bone loss after 1 year. The primary stability was found to be 72.7±7.5 ISQ, which slightly increased to 73.6±7.2 ISQ (NS) after 3 to 4 months of healing. The stability was significantly higher in the mandible than in the maxilla at placement and after healing. CONCLUSION: In this limited clinical study, the use of a novel hydrophilic dental implant results in favorable short-term outcomes.

  • Hand Function in Adults with Radial Longitudinal Deficiency.

    • Functional impairment in individuals with radial longitudinal deficiency can be influenced by several factors, including a short and bowed forearm, radial deviation of the wrist, a non-functional or absent thumb, limited finger motion, and impaired grip strength, but their relationship with activity and participation in adults with radial deficiency is not known.METHODS: Twenty individuals, eighteen to sixty years of age, who had Bayne type-II to V radial longitudinal deficiency, were examined in the context of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health. Body function and structure were evaluated by measures of range of motion, grip strength, key pinch, sensibility, and radiographic parameters. Activity was evaluated by the Box and Block Test and the Sollerman test, and participation was evaluated by QuickDASH (the short form of the Disabilities of Arm, Shoulder and Hand outcome measure) and by the Medical Outcomes Study 12-Item Short Form Health Survey. Statistical correlations among assessments of body function and structure, activity, and participation were examined.RESULTS: The mean total active motion of the wrist (43°) and mean total active motion of the digits (377°) were less than the norms. The mean radial deviation of the wrist was 31°. The mean grip strength (4.0 kg), key pinch (1.4 kg), and scores for the Box and Block Test (55 blocks per minute) and the Sollerman test on hand function (56 points) were considerably lower than the norms. The mean scores were 18 points for QuickDASH, 51 points for Short Form-12 physical component summary, and 53 points for Short Form-12 mental component summary. Significant relationships were found between the Box and Block Test and grip strength (p = 0.012), key pinch (p < 0.001), and total active motion of digits (p < 0.001); between the Sollerman test and the total active motion of elbow (p < 0.001) and the total active motion of digits (p < 0.001); between the QuickDASH and forearm length (p < 0.001), the total active motion of elbow (p = 0.001), and the total active motion of digits (p < 0.001); between the Short Form-12 physical component summary and grip strength (p = 0.016), forearm length (p < 0.001), total active elbow motion (p < 0.001), and total active digit motion (p < 0.001); and between the Short-Form-12 mental component summary and radial deviation of the wrist (p = 0.019). No significant correlations were found between the radiographic measurement of the radial deviation of the wrist (total forearm angle) and the Box and Block Test (p = 0.244), the Sollerman test (p = 0.775), QuickDASH (p = 0.156), Short Form-12 physical component summary (p = 0.107), or Short Form-12 mental component summary (p = 0.129).CONCLUSIONS: In individuals with radial longitudinal deficiency, grip strength, key pinch, forearm length, and elbow and digital motion seem to be more important for the individual's activity and participation than the radial angulation of the wrist.LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Prognostic Level IV.   • Hand function in children with radial longitudinal deficiency

    • Background: In children with hypoplasia or aplasia of the radius (radial longitudinal deficiency) manual activity limitations may be caused by several factors; a short and bowed forearm, radial deviation of the wrist, a non-functional or absent thumb, limited range of motion in the fingers and impaired grip strength. The present study investigates the relation between these variables and activity and participation in children with radial dysplasia. Methods: Twenty children, age 4-17 years, with radial longitudinal dysplasia Bayne type II-IV were examined with focus on the International Classification of Functioning and Health, version for Children and Youth (ICF-CY) context. Body function/structure was evaluated by measures of range of motion, grip strength, sensibility and radiographic parameters. Activity was examined by Box and Block Test and Assisting Hand Assessment (AHA). Participation was assessed by Children's Hand-use Experience Questionnaire (CHEQ). Statistical correlations between assessments of body function/structure and activity as well as participation were examined. Results: The mean total active motion of wrist (49.6 degrees) and digits (447 degrees) were less than norms. The mean hand forearm angle was 34 degrees radially. Ulnar length ranged from 40 to 80% of age-related norms. Grip strength (mean 2.7 kg) and Box and Block Test (mean 33.8 blocks/minute) were considerably lower than for age-related norms. The mean score for the AHA was 55.9 and for CHEQ Grasp efficiency 69.3. The AHA had significant relationship with the total range of motion of digits (p = 0.042). Self-experienced time of performance (CHEQ Time) had significant relationship with total active motion of wrist (p = 0.043). Hand forearm angle did not show any significant relationship with Box and Block Test, AHA or CHEQ. Conclusion: In radial longitudinal deficiency total range of motion of digits and wrist may be of more cardinal importance to the child's activity and participation than the angulation of the wrist.

  • Metal versus rare-gas ion irradiation during Ti1-xAlxN film growth by hybrid high power pulsed magnetron/dc magnetron co-sputtering using synchronized pulsed substrate bias

    • Metastable NaCl-structure Ti1-xAlxN is employed as a model system to probe the effects of metal versus rare-gas ion irradiation during film growth using reactive high-power pulsed magnetron sputtering (HIPIMS) of Al and dc magnetron sputtering of Ti. The alloy film composition is chosen to be x = 0.61, near the kinetic solubility limit at the growth temperature of 500 degrees C. Three sets of experiments are carried out: a -60V substrate bias is applied either continuously, in synchronous with the full HIPIMS pulse, or in synchronous only with the metal-rich-plasma portion of the HIPIMS pulse. Alloy films grown under continuous dc bias exhibit a thickness-invariant small-grain, two-phase nanostructure (wurtzite AlN and cubic Ti1-xAlxN) with random orientation, due primarily to intense Ar+ irradiation leading to Ar incorporation (0.2 at. %), high compressive stress (-4.6 GPa), and material loss by resputtering. Synchronizing the bias with the full HIPIMS pulse results in films that exhibit much lower stress levels (-1.8GPa) with no measureable Ar incorporation, larger grains elongated in the growth direction, a very small volume fraction of wurtzite AlN, and random orientation. By synchronizing the bias with the metal-plasma phase of the HIPIMS pulses, energetic Ar+ ion bombardment is greatly reduced in favor of irradiation predominantly by Al+ ions. The resulting films are single phase with a dense competitive columnar structure, strong 111 orientation, no measureable trapped Ar concentration, and even lower stress (-0.9 GPa). Thus, switching from Ar+ to Al+ bombardment, while maintaining the same integrated incident ion/metal ratio, eliminates phase separation, minimizes renucleation during growth, and reduces the high concentration of residual point defects, which give rise to compressive stress.

    • Growth of fully dense refractory thin films by means of physical vapor deposition (PVD) requires elevated temperatures T-s to ensure sufficient adatom mobilities. Films grown with no external heating are underdense, as demonstrated by the open voids visible in cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy images and by x-ray reflectivity results; thus, the layers exhibit low nanoindentation hardness and elastic modulus values. Ion bombardment of the growing film surface is often used to enhance densification; however, the required ion energies typically extract a steep price in the form of residual rare-gas-ion-induced compressive stress. Here, the authors propose a PVD strategy for the growth of dense, hard, and stress-free refractory thin films at low temperatures; that is, with no external heating. The authors use TiN as a model ceramic materials system and employ hybrid high-power pulsed and dc magnetron co-sputtering (HIPIMS and DCMS) in Ar/N-2 mixtures to grow dilute Ti1-xTaxN alloys on Si(001) substrates. The Ta target driven by HIPIMS serves as a pulsed source of energetic Ta+/Ta2+ metal-ions, characterized by in-situ mass and energy spectroscopy, while the Ti target operates in DCMS mode (Ta-HIPIMS/Ti-DCMS) providing a continuous flux of metal atoms to sustain a high deposition rate. Substrate bias V-s is applied in synchronous with the Ta-ion portion of each HIPIMS pulse in order to provide film densification by heavy-ion irradiation (m(Ta) = 180.95 amu versus m(Ti) = 47.88 amu) while minimizing Ar+ bombardment and subsequent trapping in interstitial sites. Since Ta is a film constituent, primarily residing on cation sublattice sites, film stress remains low. Dense Ti0.92Ta0.08N alloy films, 1.8 mu m thick, grown with T-s less than= 120 degrees C (due to plasma heating) and synchronized bias, V-s = 160 V, exhibit nanoindentation hardness H = 25.9 GPa and elastic modulus E = 497 GPa compared to 13.8 and 318 GPa for underdense Ti-HIPIMS/Ti-DCMS TiN reference layers (T-s less than 120 degrees C) grown with the same V-s, and 7.8 and 248 GPa for DCMS TiN films grown with no applied bias (T-s less than 120 degrees C). Ti0.92Ta0.08N residual stress is low, sigma = -0.7 GPa, and essentially equal to that of Ti-HIPIMS/Ti-DCMS TiN films grown with the same substrate bias.

    • Det reformerade allmänna svenska pensionssystemet har hyllats av många, inte minst av dem som deltagit i själva utarbetandet av systemet, men hur upplevs några av de mer grundläggande antagandena bakom reformen av dem det avser att ge ekonomiskt skydd åt på ålderdomen? Genom ett omfattande djupintervjumaterial visar Lars Harrysson och Erika Werner att det finns såväl stöd som brist på det samma för dessa antaganden. Bland annat på frågorna om viljan och förmågan att välja själv bland pensionsfonder, och om en adekvat pension kan förväntas, ges övervägande ett ganska svagt stöd, men det finns också tydliga undantag. Mycket talar för att lovsången till pensionssystemet bör tystna, åtminstone till hur utformningen av systemet ser ut i dag, inte till reformen i sig. Den var nödvändig.
