  • The need for support and adaptation in the workplace among persons with different types of disabilities and reduced work ability
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Disability Research. - : Stockholm University Press. - 1501-7419 .- 1745-3011. ; 22:1, s. 253-264
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study aimed to examine support and adaptation needed by persons with four different types of disabilities, either at their workplace or in order to enter the labour market. A secondary analysis was conducted, based on the regular labour market survey (AKU), and an additional survey which included questions specifically posed to persons with disabilities. All participants had either partly or very reduced work ability. There was more need for adaptation than for support, independently of work ability and current employment status. Around 60% of respondents with a psychological disability reported a need for adapted work pace and working time, both at their workplace and in order to enter the labour market. Adapted work tasks were an important factor, especially for persons who were not currently working; around half of the non-employed participants said this adaptation could make it possible for them to work, regardless of type of disability.

  • Securing Customary Land Rights in Sub-Saharan Africa. Learning from new approaches to land tenure reform
  • 2015
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • A majority of the poor in Sub-Saharan Africa live in rural areas and make a livelihood from agriculture and other land-based production activities. Secure tenure to land is thus of fundamental importance for these people, yet very few of them have title to their land but access land through various informal customary tenure arrangements. Therefore, there is a growing awareness of the importance of providing local people with more secure rights to land. The conventional approach for securing property rights to land is by establishing a system of private ownership through individual titling. This approach has been tried in several African countries over the years but with mixed results. Since the end of the 1990s, there has been a shift of thinking regarding land tenure policy in Africa, paying attention to the legal recognition and formalization of already existing customary rights and communal tenure systems. The purpose of this paper is to describe and critically examine these newer alternative approaches to securitization of land rights in Sub-Saharan Africa with emphasis on certain challenges, which need to be tackled in order for these to have an inclusive and equitable outcome at the local level. The content of the paper is primarily based on a literature review though the challenges identified with these new approaches are based on observations from the author’s own research on the land tenure reform in northern Mozambique.

  • National Human Research Ethics : A Preliminary Comparative Case Study of Germany, Great Britain, Romania, and Sweden
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Ethics & Behavior. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1050-8422 .- 1532-7019. ; 26:7, s. 586-606
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Although international research is increasing in volume and importance, there remains a dearth of knowledge on similarities and differences in “national human research ethics” (NHREs), that is, national ethical guidelines (NEGs), Institutional Review Boards (IRBs), and research stakeholder’ ethical attitudes and behaviors (EABs). We begin to address this situation by reporting upon our experiences in conducting a multinational study into the mental health of children who had a parent/carer in prison. The study was conducted in 4 countries: Germany, Great Britain, Romania, and Sweden. Data on NHREs were gathered via a questionnaire survey, two ethics-related seminars, and ongoing contact between members of the research consortium. There was correspondence but even more so divergence between countries in the availability of NEGs and IRBs and in researcher’ EABs. Differences in NHREs have implications particularly in terms of harmonization but also for ethical philosophy and practice and for research integrity.

  • Temporomandibular disorders : Old ideas and new concepts
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Cephalalgia. - : Sage Publications. - 0333-1024 .- 1468-2982. ; 37:7, s. 692-704
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) is an umbrella term for pain and dysfunction involving the masticatory muscles and the temporomandibular joints (TMJs). TMD is the most common orofacial pain condition. Its prominent features include regional pain in the face and preauricular area, limitations in jaw movement, and noise from the TMJs during jaw movements. TMD affects up to 15% of adults and 7% of adolescents. Chronic pain is the overwhelming reason that patients with TMD seek treatment. TMD can associate with impaired general health, depression, and other psychological disabilities, and may affect the quality of life of the patient. Assessment: Evaluations indicate that the recently published Diagnostic Criteria for TMD (DC/TMD) are reliable and valid. These criteria cover the most common types of TMD, which include pain-related disorders (e.g., myalgia, headache attributable to TMD, and arthralgia) as well as disorders associated with the TMJ (primarily disc displacements and degenerative disease). As peripheral mechanisms most likely play a role in the onset of TMD, a detailed muscle examination is recommended. The persistence of pain involves more central factors, such as sensitization of the supraspinal neurons and second-order neurons at the level of the spinal dorsal horn/trigeminal nucleus, imbalanced antinociceptive activity, and strong genetic predisposition, which also is included in DC/TMD. Conclusion: The etiology is complex and still not clearly understood, but several biological and psychosocial risk factors for TMD have been identified. Several studies indicate that patients with TMD improve with a combination of noninvasive therapies, including behavior therapy, pharmacotherapy, physical therapy, and occlusal appliances. More stringently designed studies, however, are needed to assess treatment efficacy and how to tailor treatment to the individual patient.

  • Simultaneous scheduling of replacement and repair of common components in operating systems A multi-objective mathematical optimization model
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Annals of Operations Research. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0254-5330 .- 1572-9338. ; 322, s. 147-65
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In order for a system to stay operational, its components need maintenance. We consider two stakeholders-a system operator and a maintenance workshop-and a contract governing their joint activities. Components in the operating systems that are to be maintained are sent to the maintenance workshop, which should perform all maintenance activities on time in order to satisfy the contract. The maintained components are then sent back to be used in the operating systems. Our modeling of this system-of-systems includes stocks of damaged and repaired components, the workshop scheduling, and the planning of preventive maintenance for the operating systems. Our modeling is based on a mixed-binary linear optimization (MBLP) model of a preventive maintenance scheduling problem with so-called interval costs over a finite and discretized time horizon. We generalize and extend this model with the flow of components through the workshop, including the stocks of spare components. The resulting scheduling model-a mixed-integer optimization (MILP) model-is then utilized to optimize the main contract in a bi-objective setting: maximizing the availability of repaired (or new) components and minimizing the costs of maintaining the operating systems over the time horizon. We analyze the main contract and briefly discuss a turn-around time contract. Our results concern the effect of our modeling on the levels of the stocks of components over time, in particular minimizing the risk for lack of spare components.
