    • Using 14M psi(2S) events taken with the BESII detector, chi(cJ) -> 2(K+K-) decays are studied. For the four-kaon final state, the branching fractions are B(chi(c0,1,2) ->.2(K+K-)) = (3.48 +/- 0.23 +/- 0.47) x 10(-3), (0.70 +/- 0.13 +/- 0.10) x 10(-3), and (2.17 +/- 0.20 +/- 0.31) x 10(-3). For the phi K+K- final state, the branching fractions, which are measured for the first time, are B(chi(c0,1,2) -> phi K+K-) = (1.03 +/- 0.22 +/- 0.15) x 10(-3), (0.46 +/- 0.16 +/- 0.06) x 10(-3), and (1.67 +/- 0.26 +/- 0.24) x 10(-4). For the phi phi final state, B(chi(c0,2) -> phi phi) = (0.94 +/- 0.21 +/- 0.13) x 10(-3) and (1.70 +/- 0.30 +/- 0.25) x 10(-3).

  • Dynamics and waves near multiple magnetic null points in reconnection diffusion region

    • Identifying the magnetic structure in the region where the magnetic field lines break and how reconnection happens is crucial to improving our understanding of three-dimensional reconnection. Here we show the in situ observation of magnetic null structures in the diffusion region, the dynamics, and the associated waves. Possible spiral null pair has been identified near the diffusion region. There is a close relation among the null points, the bipolar signature of the Z component of the magnetic field, and enhancement of the flux of energetic electrons up to 100 keV. Near the null structures, whistler-mode waves were identified by both the polarity and the power law of the spectrum of electric and magnetic fields. It is found that the angle between the fans of the nulls is quite close to the theoretically estimated maximum value of the group-velocity cone angle for the whistler wave regime of reconnection.

    • In the first production run of the WASA experiment at COSY, the eta decay into three neutral pions was measured in proton-proton interactions at a proton beam kinetic energy of 1.4 GeV. The Dalitz plot of the three pious was Studied using 1.2 x 10(5) fully reconstructed events. and the quadratic slope parameter alpha was determined to be -0.027 +/- 0.008(stat) +/- 0.005(syst). The result is consistent with previous measurements and further corroborates the importance of pion-pion final state interactions. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Preparation of la-doped BiFeO3 thin films with Fe2+ ions on Si substrates

    • La-doped BiFeO3 thin films with Fe2+ ions have been prepared on Pt/TiO2/SiO2/Si substrates by pulsed laser deposition in order to enhance the ferroelectric and magnetic properties. The targets for the film deposition were synthesized using a rapid liquid phase sintering technique to ensure the low leakage. The dielectric properties at room temperature and above were investigated. It was observed that the La doping greatly enhances the ferroelectric polarization at room temperature by modifying the film structure from rhombohedral to monoclinic. The saturation magnetization was enhanced about two times due to the Fe2+ ions in the thin films. (C) 2006 American Institute of Physics.

    • Phthalcon-11 (aquocyanophthalocyaninatocobalt (III)) forms semiconducting nanocrystals that can be dispersed in epoxy coatings to obtain a semiconducting material with a low percolation threshold. We investigated the structure-conductivity relation in this composite and the deviation from its optimal realization by combining two techniques. The real parts of the electrical conductivity of a Phthalcon-11/ epoxy coating and of Phthalcon-11 powder were measured by dielectric spectroscopy as a function of frequency and temperature. Conducting atomic force microscopy (C-AFM) was applied to quantify the conductivity through the coating locally along the surface. This combination gives an excellent tool to visualize the particle network. We found that a large fraction of the crystals is organized in conducting channels of fractal building blocks. In this picture, a low percolation threshold automatically leads to a conductivity that is much lower than that of the filler. Since the structure-conductivity relation for the found network is almost optimal, a drastic increase in the conductivity of the coating cannot be achieved by changing the particle network, but only by using a filler with a higher conductivity level.

Instrumentation, Control and Automation in Wastewater Systems summarizes the state-of-the-art of ICA and its application in wastewater treatment systems and focuses on how leading-edge technology is used for better operation. The book is written for: * The practising process engineer and the operator, who wishes to get an updated picture of what is possible to implement in terms of ICA; * The process designer, who needs to consider the couplings between design and operation; * The researcher or the student, who wishes to get the latest technological overview of an increasingly complex field. There is a clear aim to present a practical ICA approach, based on a technical and economic platform. The economic benefit of different control and operation possibilities is quantified. The more qualitative benefits, such as better process understanding and more challenging work for the operator are also described. Several full-scale experiences of how ICA has improved economy, ease of operation and robustness of plant operation are presented. The book emphasizes both unit process control and plant wide operation.

  • Activation recovery time measurements in evaluation of global sequence and dispersion of ventricular repolarization

    • Introduction: Activation recovery time (ART), defined as the time from the earliest ventricular activation time to the end of T wave on unipolar electrograms, has been used as an index of myocardial repolarization time. However, it is unknown whether the ART can be used to estimate the global sequence and dispersion of ventricular repolarization as determined by the monophasic action potential (MAP) mapping technique. Methods and Results: Endocardial MAPs and unipolar electrograms were simultaneously recorded using the CARTO system from 34 +/- 12 left (n = 6) or right (n = 9) ventricular sites in 12 patients. End-of-repolarization (EOR) times from the MAPs and ARTs from the unipolar electrograms were calculated, based on which 15 sets of 3-dimensional maps of global EOR sequence and ART sequence were reconstructed. The ART sequence was consistent with the EOR sequence in 14 of 15 maps. In the 473 paired measurements obtained, the differences between the ART and the EOR time were 2 +/- 22 milliseconds (NS). A significant positive correlation between the ART and the EOR time was found in all the maps (r = 0.58 +/- 0.22). Agreement analyses showed that the differences between these 2 measurements were almost all within the range of mean difference +/- 2 SD for each individual map and for all the 473 recordings. The global dispersion of ART was 79 +/- 35 milliseconds, as compared with that of EOR time of 78 +/- 35 milliseconds (NS). Conclusion: The ART from unipolar electrograms is a good estimate of EOR time measured from MAPs, suggesting the usefulness of the former in evaluation of global sequence and dispersion of ventricular repolarization.
