  • Narrow-gap, semiconducting, superhard amorphous carbon with high toughness, derived from C60 fullerene
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Cell Reports Physical Science. - : Elsevier. - 2666-3864. ; 2:9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • New carbon forms that exhibit extraordinary physicochemical properties can be generated from nanostructured precursors under extreme pressure. Nevertheless, synthesis of such fascinating materials is often not well understood. That is the case of the C60 precursor, with irreproducible results that impede further progress in the materials design. Here, the semiconducting amorphous carbon, having band gaps of 0.1–0.3 eV and the advantages of isotropic superhardness and superior toughness over single-crystal diamond and inorganic glasses, is produced from fullerene at high pressure and moderate temperatures. A systematic investigation of the structure and bonding evolution is carried out with complementary characterization methods, which helps to build a model of the transformation that can be used in further high-pressure/high-temperature (high p,T) synthesis of novel nano-carbon systems for advanced applications. The amorphous carbon materials produced have the potential of accomplishing the demanding optoelectronic applications that diamond and graphene cannot achieve.

  • Development of Circularly Recyclable Low Melting Temperature Bicomponent Fibers toward a Sustainable Nonwoven Application
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: ACS Sustainable Chemistry and Engineering. - : American Chemical Society. - 2168-0485. ; 9:49, s. 16778-16785
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sustainable low melting temperature bicomponent polyester fibers that can be circularly recycled were developed. The potentially biobased poly(hexamethylene terephthalate) (PHT), acting as the low melting temperature sheath material in the designed bicomponent fibers, was synthesized in a pilot scale. The obtained PHT with an intrinsic viscosity of 0.47 dL/g showed suitable processability when it was processed together with a poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) core in a melt-spinning process of bicomponent fibers. Compared with the commercial low melting temperature terephthalate-isophthalate copolyester LMP-160, PHT showed superior mechanical properties according to DMA analysis. The low melting temperature bicomponent fibers with a ratio of the PBT core and PHT sheath at 70:30 were produced smoothly at 290 °C in a pilot melt-spinning line. Preliminary chemical recycling investigations by methanolysis revealed that PHT/PBT bicomponent fibers were completely depolymerized within 2 h at 200 °C, yielding pure terephthalate, which could be conveniently separated and recycled. This indicated the feasibility of circular recycling, which will greatly improve the sustainability of nonwovens thermally bonded by these new bicomponent fibers. © 2021 The Authors.

  • Synthesis of Biobased Block Copolymers Using A Novel Methacrylated Methyl Salicylate and Poly(3-Hydroxybutyrate)
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: ChemistrySelect. - : Wiley. - 2365-6549. ; 6:43, s. 12255-12265
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A novel biobased vinyl monomer was synthesized by the reaction of methyl salicylate with methacrylic anhydride. The resulting salicylate based monomer was polymerized by reversible addition fragmentation transfer (RAFT) polymerizations using two or three trithiocarbonate functionalized poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) macro agents. The molecular structures of the obtained polymers were confirmed by NMR spectroscopy and GPC analysis. The resulting block copolymers showed glass transition temperature (Tg) at 5 °C and melting temperature (Tm) at 160 °C according to DSC results. Compared to PHB, the obtained block copolymers displayed enhanced thermal stability according to TGA results. The overall rate constants of the RAFT polymerization using tri-functionalized PHB macro agent were determined as 2.58 ×10−4, 1.17×10−4, and 0.50×10−4 L mol−1s−1 for 70, 80 and 90 °C, respectively. The activation energy was found to be 18.6 kcal K−1mol−1. The overall rate constant of the homopolymerization of the obtained monomer was determined as 1.14×10−4 Lmol−1s−1.

  • Synthesis, Enzymatic Degradation, and Polymer-Miscibility Evaluation of Nonionic Antimicrobial Hyperbranched Polyesters with Indole or Isatin Functionalities
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Biomacromolecules. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1525-7797 .- 1526-4602. ; 22:5, s. 2256-2271
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Most macromolecular antimicrobials are ionic and thus lack miscibility/compatibility with nonionic substrate materials. In this context, nonionic hyperbranched polyesters (HBPs) with indole or isatin functionality were rationally designed, synthesized, and characterized. Antimicrobial disk diffusion assay indicated that these HBPs showed significant antibacterial activity against 8 human pathogenic bacteria compared to small molecules with indole or isatin groups. According to DSC measurements, up to 20% indole-based HBP is miscible with biodegradable polyesters (polyhydroxybutyrate or polycaprolactone), which can be attributed to the favorable hydrogen bonding between the N-H moiety of indole and the C=O of polyesters. HBPs with isatin or methylindole were completely immiscible with the same matrices. None of the HBPs leaked out from plastic matrix after being immersed in water for 5 days. The incorporation of indole into HBPs as well as small molecules facilitated their enzymatic degradation with PETase from Ideonella sakaiensis, while isatin had a complex impact. Molecular docking simulations of monomeric molecules with PETase revealed different orientations of the molecules at the active site due to the presence of indole or isatin groups, which could be related to the observed different enzymatic degradation behavior. Finally, biocompatibility analysis with a mammalian cell line showed the negligible cytotoxic effect of the fabricated HBPs.

  • Biobased aliphatic polyesters from a spirocyclic dicarboxylate monomer derived from levulinic acid
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Green Chemistry. - 1463-9270. ; 23:15, s. 5706-5723
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Levulinic acid derived from lignocellulose is an important biobased building block chemical. Here, we report on the synthesis and polymerization of a rigid spirocyclic diester monomer to produce polyesters and copolyesters. The monomer was prepared via a one-step acid catalyzed ketalization involving ethyl levulinate and pentaerythritol by employing a straightforward, solvent-free, and readily scalable method which required no chromatographic purification. Still, careful removal of traces of water from the spirodiester prior to the polycondensations proved crucial to avoid side reactions. A preliminary life cycle assessment (LCA) in terms of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions indicated that the corresponding spirodiacid tended to be environmentally favourable, producing less CO2 emission than e.g., biobased succinic acid and adipic acid. A series of aliphatic polyesters with reasonably high molecular weights was subsequently prepared in melt and modified melt polycondensations of the spiro-diester with 1,4-butanediol, 1,6-hexanediol, neopentyl glycol and 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol, respectively. The resulting fully amorphous polyesters showed glass transition temperatures (Tgs) in the range 12-49 °C and thermalstability up to 300 °C. Hot-pressed films of the polyesters based on neopentyl glycol and 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol were transparent and mechanically strong, and dynamic melt rheology showed stable shear moduli over time to indicate good processability. In addition, the spiro-diester monomer was employed in copolycondensations with diethyl adipate and 1,4-butanediol and demonstrated good reactivity and stability. Hence, the results of the present study indicate that the spiro-diester based on levulinic acid is an effective monomer for the preparation of aliphatic polyesters and other condensation polymers.

  • Assessment of IsPETase-Assisted Depolymerization of Terephthalate Aromatic Polyesters and the Effect of the Thioredoxin Fusion Domain
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Applied Sciences (Switzerland). - : MDPI AG. - 2076-3417. ; 11:18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Terephthalate polyesters such as poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) have been massively produced over the last few decades due to their attractive properties in multiple applications. However, due to their limited biodegradability, they have accumulated in landfills and oceans, posing an environmental threat. Enzymatic recycling technologies are predicted to generate long-term socioeconomic benefits. In the present work, we compared the IsPETase (from Ideonella sakaiensis 201-F6) activity on a series of polyesters, including poly(butylene) terephthalate (PBT), poly(hexamethylene) terephthalate (PHT) and Akestra™, with PET. The IsPETase showed remarkable activity toward PET (39% degradation of the original polyester) that was higher than that toward Akestra™ (0.13%), PBT (0.25%) and PHT (0.13%) after 72 h. Thus, based on experimental data and computational analysis, we report insights into IsPETase activity on a series of terephthalate-based polyesters. Aside from that, the fusion domain (Trx) effect in the production and activity of a recombinant Trx-IsPETase is reported.
