  • Are there two engines at the center of 3C 286?
  • 1994
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - Les Ulis : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 287:1, s. 32-37
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents images of the compact steep-spectrum quasar 3C 286 obtained with global VLBI arrays at 4.99 and 1.66 GHz. The morphology appears to be intermediate between the core-jet types and grossly distorted objects. The central portion is resolved into two components of almost equal peak brightnesses and spectral indices. On the 1.66 GHz map, the jet extends in position angle approximately -136-degrees, up to a knot (W1) (approximately 75 mas from the component C2) from which it curves rapidly towards the west to form another knot (W2). It is possible that the VLBI jet bends further towards the secondary component separated from the core by approximately 2.6'' in p.a. -115-degrees seen in high dynamic range VLA or Merlin maps. The jet has a sinuous feature shown clearly on the 5 GHz map. There is a low brightness extension at the North (designated N1) shown on both the 1.66 and 5 GHz maps, which is connected to the component C1 and bends towards the east.

  • A secreted mucin carrying sialyl-Lewis a from colon carcinoma cells binds to E-selectin and inhibits HL-60 cell adhesion.
  • 1994
  • Ingår i: International journal of cancer. Journal international du cancer. - 0020-7136. ; 59:6, s. 823-9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sialyl-Lewis x and a are known as ligands for E-selectin (ELAM-I) involved in leukocyte-endothelial adhesion. L-CanAg (light cancer antigen), secreted by a colon carcinoma cell line COLO 205, is a soluble mucin-type glycoprotein expressing sialyl-Lewis a antigens. L-CanAg was purified from spent culture medium by trichloracetic acid precipitation and Superose 6 gel filtration. With a monoclonal antibody against E-selectin (BBAI) as a positive control, the purified L-CanAg was shown to bind to E-selectin-Fc coated into plastic microtiter wells and to the surface of transiently E-selectin-transfected COS-I cells in a Ca(2+)-dependent way. Immunofluorescent double labelling showed that both BBAI and L-CanAg stained the same cells and morphological co-localization on E-selectin-transfected COS-I cells. Like BBAI, L-CanAg can inhibit leukocyte HL-60 cell adhesion to E-selectin-transfected COS-I cells, and this inhibition can be blocked by a F(ab')2 fragment directed against the sialyl-Lewis a epitope.

  • A family of complex tandem DNA repeats in the telomeres of Chironomus pallidivittatus
  • 1994
  • Ingår i: Molecular and Cellular Biology. - 0270-7306. ; 14:12, s. 8028-8036
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A family of 340-bp tandem telomere-associated DNA repeats is present in 50- to 200-kb blocks in seven of the eight paired chromosome ends in Chironomus pallidivittatus. It consists of four main subfamilies, differing from each other by small clusters of mutations. This differentiation may reflect different functional roles for the repeats. Here we find that one subfamily, D3, is consistently localized most peripherally and extends close to the ends of the chromosomes, as shown by its sensitivity to the exonuclease Bal 31. The amounts of D3 are highly variable between individuals. The repeat characteristic for D3 forms a segment with pronounced dyad symmetry, which in single-strand form would give rise to a hairpin. Evidence from an interspecies comparison suggests that a similar structure is the result of selective forces. Another subfamily, M1, is present more proximally in a subgroup of telomeres characterized by a special kind of repeat variability. Thus, a complex block with three kinds of subfamilies may occupy different M1 telomeres depending on the stock of animals. We conclude that subfamilies are differentially distributed between and within telomeres and are likely to serve different functions.
