  • Measurements of (XcJ)-> K+K-K+K- decays
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters B. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693 .- 1873-2445. ; 642:3, s. 197-202
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using 14M psi(2S) events taken with the BESII detector, chi(cJ) -> 2(K+K-) decays are studied. For the four-kaon final state, the branching fractions are B(chi(c0,1,2) ->.2(K+K-)) = (3.48 +/- 0.23 +/- 0.47) x 10(-3), (0.70 +/- 0.13 +/- 0.10) x 10(-3), and (2.17 +/- 0.20 +/- 0.31) x 10(-3). For the phi K+K- final state, the branching fractions, which are measured for the first time, are B(chi(c0,1,2) -> phi K+K-) = (1.03 +/- 0.22 +/- 0.15) x 10(-3), (0.46 +/- 0.16 +/- 0.06) x 10(-3), and (1.67 +/- 0.26 +/- 0.24) x 10(-4). For the phi phi final state, B(chi(c0,2) -> phi phi) = (0.94 +/- 0.21 +/- 0.13) x 10(-3) and (1.70 +/- 0.30 +/- 0.25) x 10(-3).

  • Precision electroweak measurements on the Z resonance
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Physics Reports. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-1573 .- 1873-6270. ; 427:5-6, s. 257-454
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on the final electroweak measurements performed with data taken at the Z resonance by the experiments operating at the electron-positron colliders SLC and LEP. The data consist of 17 million Z decays accumulated by the ALEPH, DELPHI, L3 and OPAL experiments at LEP, and 600 thousand Z decays by the SLID experiment using a polarised beam at SLC. The measurements include cross-sections, forward-backward asymmetries and polarised asymmetries. The mass and width of the Z boson, m(Z) and Gamma(Z), and its couplings to fermions, for example the p parameter and the effective electroweak mixing angle for leptons, are precisely measured: m(Z) = 91.1875 +/- 0.0021 GeV, Gamma(Z) = 2.4952 +/- 0.0023 GeV, rho(l) = 1.0050 +/- 0.0010, sin(2)theta(eff)(lept) = 0.23153 +/- 0.00016. The number of light neutrino species is determined to be 2.9840 +/- 0.0082, in agreement with the three observed generations of fundamental fermions. The results are compared to the predictions of the Standard Model (SM). At the Z-pole, electroweak radiative corrections beyond the running of the QED and QCD coupling constants are observed with a significance of five standard deviations, and in agreement with the Standard Model. Of the many Z-pole measurements, the forward-backward asymmetry in b-quark production shows the largest difference with respect to its SM expectation, at the level of 2.8 standard deviations. Through radiative corrections evaluated in the framework of the Standard Model, the Z-pole data are also used to predict the mass of the top quark, m(t) = 173(+10)(+13) GeV, and the mass of the W boson, m(W) = 80.363 +/- 0.032 GeV. These indirect constraints are compared to the direct measurements, providing a stringent test of the SM. Using in addition the direct measurements of m(t) and m(W), the mass of the as yet unobserved SM Higgs boson is predicted with a relative uncertainty of about 50% and found to be less than 285 GeV at 95% confidence level. • The upgraded DO detector
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0168-9002 .- 1872-9576. ; 565:2, s. 463-537
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The DO experiment enjoyed a very successful data-collection run at the Fermilab Tevatron collider between 1992 and 1996. Since then, the detector has been upgraded to take advantage of improvements to the Tevatron and to enhance its physics capabilities. We describe the new elements of the detector, including the silicon microstrip tracker, central fiber tracker, solenoidal magnet, preshower detectors, forward muon detector, and forward proton detector. The uranium/liquid -argon calorimeters and central muon detector, remaining from Run 1, are discussed briefly. We also present the associated electronics, triggering, and data acquisition systems, along with the design and implementation of software specific to DO.

  • Small interfering RNA-directed targeting of toll-like receptor 4 inhibits human prostate cancer cell invasion, survival, and tumorigenicity
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Molecular Immunology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0161-5890 .- 1872-9142. ; 46:15, s. 2876-2884
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A major cause of tumor treatment failure is cancer cell metastasis. Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4)-mediated signaling has been implicated in tumor cell invasion, survival, and metastasis in a variety of cancers. In this study, we investigated the biological roles of TLR4 in prostate metastatic cell invasion and survival, and the potential of gene silencing of TLR4 using small interfering RNA (siRNA) for treatment of cancer. In cultured human prostate cancer cell lines, TLR4 were higher PC3 and DU145 as compared with the poorly metastatic LNCaP indicating that up-regulation of TLR4 was positively correlated with metastasis of tumor cell. In the highly metastatic cancer cell PC3, gene silencing of TLR4 using siRNA significantly inhibited TLR4 mRNA expression and protein level. Knockdown of TLR4 in PC3 cells resulted in a dramatic reduction of tumor cell migration and invasion as indicated by a Matrigel invasion assay. Furthermore, TLR4 siRNA suppressed cell viability and ultimately caused the induction of apoptotic cell death. The effects were associated with abrogating TLR4-mediated signaling to downstream target molecules such as myeloid differentiation factor 88 (MyD88), adaptor-inducing IFN-beta (TRIF), and interferon regulatory factor-1 (IRF-1). In a mouse prostate cancer model, administration with the plasmid construct expressing siRNA for TLR4 obviously inhibited established tumor growth and survival. These studies revealed evidence of a multifaceted signaling network operating downstream of TLR4-mediated tumor cell invasion, proliferation, and survival. Thus, RNA interference-directed targeting of TLR4 may raise the potential of its application for cancer therapy.

  • VEGF-B is dispensable for blood vessel growth but critical for their survival, and VEGF-B targeting inhibits pathological angiogenesis
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America. - : Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. - 0027-8424 .- 1091-6490. ; 106:15, s. 6152-6157
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • VEGF-B, a homolog of VEGF discovered a long time ago, has not been considered an important target in antiangiogenic therapy. Instead, it has received little attention from the field. In this study, using different animal models and multiple types of vascular cells, we revealed that although VEGF-B is dispensable for blood vessel growth, it is critical for their survival. Importantly, the survival effect of VEGF-B is not only on vascular endothelial cells, but also on pericytes, smooth muscle cells, and vascular stem/progenitor cells. In vivo, VEGF-B targeting inhibited both choroidal and retinal neovascularization. Mechanistically, we found that the vascular survival effect of VEGF-B is achieved by regulating the expression of many vascular prosurvival genes via both NP-1 and VEGFR-1. Our work thus indicates that the function of VEGF-B in the vascular system is to act as a "survival," rather than an "angiogenic" factor and that VEGF-B inhibition may offer new therapeutic opportunities to treat neovascular diseases.

  • Clinical and pathological analysis of malignant carotid body tumour : a report of nine cases
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Acta Oto-Laryngologica. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0001-6489 .- 1651-2251. ; 129:11, s. 1320-1325
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Conclusions. Malignant carotid body tumour (MCBT) is a clinically rare disease that often invades the carotid artery and cranial nerves. Diagnosis of malignant tumour should be based on extensive invasion of neighbouring organs and distant metastasis. Extensive resection should be undertaken early. Radiotherapy is effective, whereas chemotherapy is uncertain. Objective. To summarize the clinical pathological and prognostic characteristics of MCBT and explore methods for diagnosis and treatment. Materials and methods. The study material comprised clinical, pathological, therapeutic and follow-up data concerning nine patients (four males, five females) with MCBT, treated at Tianjin Cancer Hospital between January 1956 and June 2006. The material was analysed retrospectively. Disease duration averaged 6.4 years. Shamblin classification was: one case, type ?; 8 cases, type ?. All nine patients underwent ultrasound examination, four underwent digital subtraction arteriography (DSA) and three had magnetic resonance angiography (MRA). Five patients underwent preoperative training of compression of the carotid (Matas test). Extensive resection was performed in all nine cases. Results. The carotid artery was blocked in three patients. In one of these the artery was reconstructed with a vascular prosthesis, while two underwent carotid ligation. Eight patients suffered from a cranial nerve dysfunction (defect) and two suffered postoperatively from a hoarse voice, four had a glossal deviation, five had Horner's syndrome and one had a deviation of the lip angle. One patient had a congestive cough. The histopathological diagnosis in all nine cases was MCBT. One patient had metastases to a cervical lymph node and lung and another had liver metastasis. The median follow-up period was 3 years (range 6 months to 14 years). Six patients survived surgery, of whom two underwent radiotherapy. Two patients died and one could not be traced.

  • Measurement of the isolated photon cross section in p(p)over-bar collisions at root s=1.96 TeV
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters B. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693 .- 1873-2445. ; 639:3-4, s. 151-158
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The cross section for the inclusive production of isolated photons has been measured in p (p) over bar collisions at root s = 1.96 TeV with the DO detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The photons span transverse momenta 23 to 300 GeV and have pseudorapidity vertical bar n vertical bar < 0.9. The cross section is compared with the results from two next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations. The theoretical predictions agree with the measurement within uncertainties.

  • Near- and Deep-Ultraviolet Resonance Raman Spectroscopy of Pyrazine-Al-4 Complex and Al-3-Pyrazine-Al-3 Junction
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physical Chemistry C. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1932-7447 .- 1932-7455. ; 113:44, s. 19328-19334
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Near- and deep-ultraviolet (UV) resonance Raman spectroscopy of pyrazine-Al-4 complex and Al-3-pyrazine-Al-3 junction was investigated theoretically with a quantum chemical method. Here, 325 and 244 nm were employed as near- and deep-UV sources in our theoretical study The intensities of static normal Raman spectra of pyrazine-Al-4 complex and Al-3-pyrazine-Al-3 junction were enhanced oil the orders of 10 and 10(3) by a static chemical mechanism, respectively The calculated absorption spectra reveal strong B-6(2) and B-13(2u) electronic transitions near 325 nm for pyrazine-Al-4 complex and 244 nm for Al-3-pyrazine-Al-3 junction, respectively. The analyses of orbital transitions in electronic transitions reveal they are the mixture of (metal to molecule) charge transfer excitation and intracluster excitation. The intensity of near-UV resonance Raman spectroscopy of pyrazine-Al-4 complex and the intensity of deep-UV resonance Raman spectroscopy of Al-3-pyrazine-Al-3 junction are strongly enhanced on the order of 10(5) and 10(4), respectively, compared to the Raman intensity of isolated pyrazine excited at 325 and 244 nm. The calculations of Mic theory and the three-dimensional finite-difference time domain method reveal strong surface plasmon resonance and strong electromagnetic enhancements at 325 and 244 nm for single and dimer nanoparticles at suitable sizes and gap distance, respectively. The strongest SERS enhancement in the system of junction is on the order of 10(8) at the incident lights of 325 and 244 nm. The total enhancements, including the chemical and electromagnetic enhancements, can reach Lip to 10(13). So, Al is a suitable material for near- and deep-UV surface-enhanced resonance Raman scattering

  • An anti-endotoxin peptide that generates from the amino-terminal domain of complement regulatory protein C1 inhibitor.
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications - BBRC. - : Elsevier BV. - 0006-291X .- 1090-2104. ; 359:2, s. 285-91
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • C1 inhibitor (C1INH), a complement regulatory protein, prevents endotoxin shock via a direct interaction of the amino-terminal domain with gram-negative bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Importantly, the cleaved, inactive C1INH still is an anti-endotoxin effector indicating the anti-endotoxin peptide that generates from the amino-terminal domain of C1INH. In this study, we first identified that a cleaved fragment within the major part of the amino-terminal domain in in vitro proteolytic analysis of C1INH had an ability to bind to LPS. We synthesized several peptides overlapping the C1INH cleaved fragment. Among these synthetic peptides, a 13-mer derivative peptide at position from 18 to 30, named N2((18-30)), exhibited the most powerful anti-endotoxin activity in vitro, enlightening that it was most strong at binding to LPS, inhibiting the interaction of LPS with LPS-binding protein (LBP), blocking LPS binding to CD14(+) cells, and suppressing production of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha by murine macrophages, RAW 264.7. In the murine endotoxin shock model, the peptide N2((18-30)) protected mice from LPS-induced lethal septic shock by inhibiting macrophage activation. These data indicate that the peptide N2((18-30)) derived from the amino-terminal region of C1INH is anti-endotoxin.

  • C5aR-mediated myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury.
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications - BBRC. - : Elsevier BV. - 0006-291X .- 1090-2104. ; 357:2, s. 446-52
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The complement system activation can mediate myocardial ischemia and reperfusion (I/R). Inhibition of C5a activity reveals attenuation of I/R-induced myocardial infarct size. However, the contribution of C5a receptor (C5aR) to I/R injury remains to be unknown. Here, we reported that both mRNA and protein for the C5aR were constitutively expressed on cardiomyocytes and upregulated as a function of time after I/R-induced myocardial cell injury in mice. Blockade of C5aR markedly decreased microvascular permeability in ischemic myocardial area and leukocyte adherence to coronary artery endothelium. Importantly, the blocking of C5aR with an anti-C5aR antibody was associated with inhibition in activation of protein kinase C delta (PKC-delta) and induction of PKC-mediated mitogen-activated protein kinase phosphatases-1 (MKP-1) leading to the increased activity of p42/p44 mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase cascade. These data provide evidence that C5aR-mediated myocardial cell injury is an important pathogenic factor, and that C5aR blockade may be useful therapeutic targets for the prevention of myocardial I/R injury.
