  • Precision electroweak measurements on the Z resonance
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Physics Reports. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-1573 .- 1873-6270. ; 427:5-6, s. 257-454
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on the final electroweak measurements performed with data taken at the Z resonance by the experiments operating at the electron-positron colliders SLC and LEP. The data consist of 17 million Z decays accumulated by the ALEPH, DELPHI, L3 and OPAL experiments at LEP, and 600 thousand Z decays by the SLID experiment using a polarised beam at SLC. The measurements include cross-sections, forward-backward asymmetries and polarised asymmetries. The mass and width of the Z boson, m(Z) and Gamma(Z), and its couplings to fermions, for example the p parameter and the effective electroweak mixing angle for leptons, are precisely measured: m(Z) = 91.1875 +/- 0.0021 GeV, Gamma(Z) = 2.4952 +/- 0.0023 GeV, rho(l) = 1.0050 +/- 0.0010, sin(2)theta(eff)(lept) = 0.23153 +/- 0.00016. The number of light neutrino species is determined to be 2.9840 +/- 0.0082, in agreement with the three observed generations of fundamental fermions. The results are compared to the predictions of the Standard Model (SM). At the Z-pole, electroweak radiative corrections beyond the running of the QED and QCD coupling constants are observed with a significance of five standard deviations, and in agreement with the Standard Model. Of the many Z-pole measurements, the forward-backward asymmetry in b-quark production shows the largest difference with respect to its SM expectation, at the level of 2.8 standard deviations. Through radiative corrections evaluated in the framework of the Standard Model, the Z-pole data are also used to predict the mass of the top quark, m(t) = 173(+10)(+13) GeV, and the mass of the W boson, m(W) = 80.363 +/- 0.032 GeV. These indirect constraints are compared to the direct measurements, providing a stringent test of the SM. Using in addition the direct measurements of m(t) and m(W), the mass of the as yet unobserved SM Higgs boson is predicted with a relative uncertainty of about 50% and found to be less than 285 GeV at 95% confidence level. • Combinatorial protein therapy of angiogenic and arteriogenic factors remarkably improves collaterogenesis and cardiac function in pigs
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America. - : Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. - 0027-8424. ; 104:29, s. 12140-12145
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Establishment of functional and stable collaterals in the ischemic myocardium is crucial to restoring cardiac function after myocardial infarction. Here, we show that only dual delivery of a combination of angiogenic and arteriogenic factors to the ischemic myocardium could significantly reestablish stable collateral networks and improve myocardial perfusion and function. A combination of FGF-2 with PDGF-BB, two factors primarily targeting endothelial cells and vascular smooth muscle cells, remarkably promotes myocardial collateral growth and stabilizes the newly formed collateral networks, which significantly restore myocardial perfusion and function. Using various members of the PDGF family together with FGF-2 in an angiogenesis assay, we demonstrate that PDGFR-α is mainly involved in angiogenic synergism, whereas PDGFR-β mediates vessel stability signals. Our findings provide conceptual guidelines for the clinical development of proangiogenic/arteriogenic factors for the treatment of ischemic heart disease.

  • Synthesis and surface characteristics of CeTbO3+delta induced by femtosecond laser irradiation
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Applied Surface Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 1873-5584 .- 0169-4332. ; 253:8, s. 3884-3887
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This work describes the use of focused, high-intensity light from a Ti: sapphire laser that generates femtosecond pulses to irradiate mixture of CeO2 and Tb4O7 under ambient conditions. The prepared samples were investigated by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). XRD and XPS measurement results demonstrated that solid solution CeTbO3+delta with cubic fluorite structure has been synthesized on the irradiated target surface. SEM micrographs showed that the ultra-short laser irradiation resulted in the formation of foamy structure and spherical particles with size varying from about 30 to 200 nm. The formation mechanism has been discussed in detail. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • LFA-1 AND MAC-1 MEDIATE PULMONARY RECRUITMENT OF NEUTROPHILS AND TISSUE DAMAGE IN ABDOMINAL SEPSIS.
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Shock. - : Ovid Technologies (Wolters Kluwer Health). - 1540-0514 .- 1073-2322. ; 30, s. 254-259
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Neutrophil-mediated lung damage is an insidious feature in septic patients, although the adhesive mechanisms behind pulmonary recruitment of neutrophils in polymicrobial sepsis remain elusive. The aim of the present study was to define the role of lymphocyte function-antigen 1 (LFA-1) and membrane-activated complex 1 (Mac-1) in septic lung injury. Pulmonary edema, bronchoalveolar infiltration of neutrophils, levels of myeloperoxidase, and CXC chemokines were determined after cecal ligation and puncture (CLP). Mice were treated with monoclonal antibodies directed against LFA-1 and Mac-1 before CLP induction. Cecal ligation and puncture induced clear-cut pulmonary damage characterized by edema formation, neutrophil infiltration, and increased levels of CXC chemokines in the lung. Notably, immunoneutralization of LFA-1 or Mac-1 decreased CLP-induced neutrophil recruitment in the bronchoalveolar space by more than 64%. Moreover, functional inhibition of LFA-1 and Mac-1 abolished CLP-induced lung damage and edema. However, formation of CXC chemokines in the lung was intact in mice pretreated with the anti-LFA-1 and anti-Mac-1 antibodies. Our data demonstrate that both LFA-1 and Mac-1 regulate pulmonary infiltration of neutrophils and lung edema associated with abdominal sepsis. Thus, these novel findings suggest that LFA-1 or Mac-1 may serve as targets to protect against lung injury in polymicrobial sepsis.

  • A Tunable Broadband Photonic RF Phase Shifter Based on a Silicon Microring Resonator
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: IEEE Photonics Technology Letters. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 1041-1135 .- 1941-0174. ; 21:1-4, s. 60-62
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We propose and demonstrate a tunable broadband photonic radio frequency (RF) phase shifter based on a silicon microring resonator. This scheme utilizes the thermal nonlinear effect of the silicon microring to change the electrical phase of the RF signal with a wide tuning range. A prototype of the phase shifter is experimentally demonstrated for a 40-GHz signal with a 0-4.6-rad tuning range.

  • Origin of mitochondrial DNA diversity of domestic yaks
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: BMC Evolutionary Biology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1471-2148. ; 6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The domestication of plants and animals was extremely important anthropologically. Previous studies have revealed a general tendency for populations of livestock species to include deeply divergent maternal lineages, indicating that they were domesticated in multiple, independent events from genetically discrete wild populations. However, in water buffalo, there are suggestions that a similar deep maternal bifurcation may have originated from a single population. These hypotheses have rarely been rigorously tested because of a lack of sufficient wild samples. To investigate the origin of the domestic yak (Poephagus grunnies), we analyzed 637 bp of maternal inherited mtDNA from 13 wild yaks (including eight wild yaks from a small population in west Qinghai) and 250 domesticated yaks from major herding regions. Results: The domestic yak populations had two deeply divergent phylogenetic groups with a divergence time of > 100,000 yrs BP. We here show that haplotypes clustering with two deeply divergent maternal lineages in domesticated yaks occur in a single, small, wild population. This finding suggests that all domestic yaks are derived from a single wild gene pool. However, there is no clear correlation of the mtDNA phylogenetic clades and the 10 morphological types of sampled yaks indicating that the latter diversified recently. Relatively high diversity was found in Qinghai and Tibet around the current wild distribution, in accordance with previous suggestions that the earliest domestications occurred in this region. Conventional molecular clock estimation led to an unrealistic early dating of the start of the domestication. However, Bayesian estimation of the coalescence time allowing a relaxation of the mutation rate Conclusion: The information gathered here and the previous studies of other animals show that the demographic histories of domestication of livestock species were highly diverse despite the common general feature of deeply divergent maternal lineages. The results further suggest that domestication of local wild prey ungulate animals was a common occurrence during the development of human civilization following the postglacial colonization in different locations of the world, including the high, arid Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau.

  • All-optical NRZ-to-AMI conversion using linear filtering effect of silicon microring resonator
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Chinese optics letters. - : Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics. - 1671-7694. ; 7:1, s. 12-14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We experimentally demonstrate 10-Cb/s format conversion from non-return-to-zero (NRZ) to alternate-mark-inversion (AMI) using the linear filtering effect of silicon microring resonator. Our discussion and analysis in simulation further show that a 10-Gb/s AMI signal with good quality can be obtained by a resonator with a notch depth larger than 25 dB when the 3-dB bandwidth is 0.4 nm.

  • Dense wavelength conversion and multicasting in a resonance-split silicon microring
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Applied Physics Letters. - : AIP Publishing. - 0003-6951 .- 1077-3118. ; 93:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We experimentally demonstrate all-optical wavelength conversions in a 10 mu m radius resonance-split silicon microring resonator based on free carrier dispersion effect. The split resonance is caused by the mutual coupling between the two countertraveling modes inside the ring resonator. Dense wavelength conversions are performed at data rates from 500 Mbytes/s to 5 Gbytes/s and a dual-channel wavelength multicasting is realized at a data rate of 1.25 Gbytes/s. The resonance splitting phenomenon opens up opportunities to convert more closely spaced wavelengths, thus effectively increasing the system capacity.
