  • UMD Banach spaces and square functions associated with heat semigroups for Schrödinger, Hermite and Laguerre operators
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Mathematische Nachrichten. - : Wiley. - 0025-584X .- 1522-2616. ; 289:4, s. 410-435
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we define square functions (also called Littlewood-Paley-Stein functions) associated with heat semigroups for Schrodinger and Laguerre operators acting on functions which take values in UMD Banach spaces. We extend classical (scalar) L-p-boundedness properties for the square functions to our Banach valued setting by using gamma-radonifying operators. We also prove that these L-p-boundedness properties of the square functions actually characterize the Banach spaces having the UMD property.

  • The KdV Equation on the Half-Line : Time-Periodicity and Mass Transport
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: SIAM Journal on Mathematical Analysis. - : Society for Industrial & Applied Mathematics (SIAM). - 0036-1410 .- 1095-7154. ; 52:2, s. 1009-1039
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The work presented here emanates from questions arising from experimental observations of the propagation of surface water waves. The experiments in question featured a periodically moving wavemaker located at one end of a flume that generated unidirectional waves of relatively small amplitude and long wavelength when compared with the undisturbed depth. It was observed that the wave profile at any point down the channel very quickly became periodic in time with the same period as that of the wavemaker. One of the questions dealt with here is whether or not such a property holds for model equations for such waves. In the present discussion, this is examined in the context of the Korteweg-de Vries equation using the recently developed version of the inverse scattering theory for boundary-value problems put forward by Fokas and his collaborators. It turns out that solutions of the Korteweg-de Vries equation generated by periodic forcing at the boundary do exhibit asymptotic temporal periodicity at any fixed point down the channel. However, a more subtle issue to do with conservation of mass fails to hold at the second order in a small parameter, which is the typical wave amplitude divided by the undisturbed depth.

  • A community perspective on changes in health related to diarrhea in northeastern Brazil
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Food and nutrition bulletin. - : SAGE Publications. - 0379-5721 .- 1564-8265. ; 32:2, s. 103-111
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Diarrhea is a major cause of death in children in developing countries. However, in Brazil, diarrhea-related morbidity and mortality have declined over the past decades. Objective To explore community perspectives in Brazil on changes in health related to diarrhea and factors that may have contributed to these changes. Methods This qualitative study included 12 focus group sessions held with 50 mothers and 42 grandmothers in the state of Ceará. Results Most grandmothers reported having lost at least one child to diarrhea, and all participants had witnessed children dying from diarrhea in the past. The participants saw a clear decline in diarrhea over the past 20 years. They felt that this was due to social, economic, and cultural progress. The participants also considered government-supported outreach programs very important for health improvement. Conclusions Knowledge of diarrhea and its causes in the community is broad, but many traditional beliefs about the illness still prevail. The Brazilian experience is an example of the critical effect that policies to promote income redistribution and universal access to education, health, water supply, and sanitation services may have on the reduction of undernutrition and diarrhea among children.

  • Catalyzing industrial decarbonization : the promissorylegitimacy of fossil-free Sweden
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Oxford Open Climate Change. - : Oxford University Press. - 2634-4068. ; 2:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In 2017, the Swedish parliament adopted a new climate policy framework that lays the foundations for an ambitious decarbonization of all sectors in Swedish society. To live up to the Paris Agreement’s temperature targets, the parliament decided that Sweden should arrive at net zero emissions of greenhouse gases by year 2045 and thereafter aim for net negative emissions. This progressive climate policy agenda is embedded in a strong collaborative discourse. To begin the transition to a fossil-free society, the Swedish government has invited a wide array of actors to join forces in the formulation and implementation of low carbon initiatives. In this paper we examine the fossil-free society as a powerful socio-technical imaginary that underpins this collaborative effort. We trace the promise attached to this future dreamscape and how it is mobilized by the government initiative Fossil-Free Sweden (FFS) to gain support for industrial decarbonization in the present. Our study draws upon roadmaps produced by FFS together with the Swedish steel, cement, and petroleum industry, as well as semi-structured interviews with selected industry actors. We find that the FFS roadmaps work as powerful “techniques of futuring” that invite industry actors to anticipate the risks and opportunities attached to the fossil-free society and at the same time contribute to shaping that society. While effectively involving incumbent actors in the political project of decarbonization, our study suggests that the roadmaps consolidate around an imagined future that is a techno-optimistic extension of the fossil-intensive present

  • An Ultra Low-Loss Silicon-Micromachined Waveguide Filter for D-Band Telecommunication Applications
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: 2018 IEEE/MTT-S International Microwave Symposium. - : IEEE. - 9781538650677 ; , s. 583-586
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A very low-loss micromachined waveguide bandpassfilter for use in D-band (110–170GHz) telecommunication applicationsis presented. The 134–146GHz filter is implemented in a silicon micromachined technology which utilises a double H-plane split, resulting in significantly lower insertion loss than conventional micromachined waveguide devices. Custom split-blocks are designed and implemented to interface with the micromachined component. Compact micromachined E-plane bends connect the split-blocks and DUT. The measured insertion loss per unit length of the waveguide technology (0.008–0.016 dB/mm) is the lowest reported to date for any micromachined waveguide at D-band. The fabricated 6-pole filter, with a bandwidth of 11.8 GHz (8.4%), has a minimum insertion loss of 0.41 dB, averaging 0.5 dB across its 1 dB bandwidth, making it the lowest-loss D-band filter reported to date in any technology. Its return loss is better than 20 dB across 85% of the same bandwidth. The unloaded quality factor of a single cavity resonator implemented in this technology is estimated to be 1600.
