  • Motherhood after traumatic spinal cord injury.
  • 1994
  • Ingår i: Paraplegia. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0031-1758. ; 32:8, s. 517-523
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present study includes all women with a traumatic spinal cord injury in Sweden who became pregnant and delivered live infants during 1980-1991. This group comprises six tetraplegic and 20 paraplegic patients, all confined to a wheelchair. During the above mentioned period the patients had delivered a total of 47 children. The study evaluated parental ability and quality of family life as regards interpersonal relationships, family relationships, social integration, recreational interests and demand for external assistance. An individual standardised interview was performed with all patients. In addition a standardised questionnaire was sent to all spouses (n = 20) and to all children above 10 years of age (n = 10). All 26 patients participated, 18 spouses completed and returned the questionnaires and all children took part in the study. We found an overall favourable outcome as regards the parameters evaluated. The families seem to live a rich and complete family life with very little demand for external help. They report a well functioning social network and seem socially integrated both as individuals and as families. To conclude, the study indicates that there is no reason to question females with an SCI in their roles as parents. The spinal cord injury per se, in females, thus does not preclude the possibility of having a family and caring for children adequately.

  • Methacholine reactivity and asthma : Report from the Northern Sweden Obstructive Lung Disease Project
  • 1993
  • Ingår i: Allergy. European Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. - : Wiley. - 0105-4538 .- 1398-9995. ; 48:2, s. 117-124
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Methacholine tests were used in an epidemiologic study of the prevalence of asthma and chronic bronchitis in northern Sweden. Of 6610 subjects in three age groups from eight representative geographic areas in the northernmost province of Sweden, 5698 (86%) completed a postal questionnaire on respiratory symptoms, and 1506 underwent a structured interview and a lung function test. A total of 292 (5%) were diagnosed as having asthma. A subsample of 284 subjects (of 320 invited) classified at the interview as having asthma (n = 98) or as having respiratory symptoms that might be due to asthma but not fulfilling the interview criteria for the diagnosis of asthma (n = 186) underwent a methacholine test. Subjects who, before the interview study, already had a well-defined asthma diagnosis were not invited to the methacholine testing. Of those 98 subjects classified as having asthma, 61% reacted to methacholine doses < or = 4 mg/ml and 79% to doses < or = 8 mg/ml, while the corresponding figures in the symptomatic but nonasthma group were 20% and 34%, respectively. The results show that a carefully performed structured interview accurately diagnoses asthma in epidemiologic studies. The methacholine tests provide important diagnostic information primarily in subjects in whom the medical history is equivocal

  • A new approach for evaluation of meal quality and meal patterns
  • 1993
  • Ingår i: Journal of human nutrition and dietetics (Print). - 0952-3871 .- 1365-277X. ; 6:3, s. 261-273
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An objective, nutritionally orientated classification system is necessary to evaluate the frequency, nutritional quality and temporal distribution of eating events in dietary surveys. In this paper a system to classify eating events qualitatively with regard to the types of food items consumed is described and demonstrated. It comprises eight food categories and criteria for their combination into four types of meals and three types of snacks of various nutrient composition. The food categories represent food items of animal and plant origin, and also food products containing sucrose and beverages containing alcohol or lacking energy and nutrients. Classification requires individual data collected by established food-record or recall methods. Data on consumed amounts is not required to classify qualitatively the eating events per se, but is required for quantitative calculations of their content, composition and relative contribution to total intakes. The application of the system to dietary data (80 repeated 24-h recalls, 517 eating events) of 16 male three-shift workers showed that classification of eating events was easy and largely unequivocal compared to traditional methods. Subsequent calculations showed expected differences between eating types with regard to content and relative quality. The meal-classification system might be used as a cost-effective method to evaluate the nutritional profile of meal patterns in surveys.
