  • Amino acid sequence at the phosphorylated site of rat liver fructose-1,6-diphosphatase and phosphorylation of a corresponding synthetic peptide
  • 1979
  • Ingår i: Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications - BBRC. - 0006-291X .- 1090-2104. ; 90:3, s. 1064-1072
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Rat liver fructose-1,6-diphosphatase was phosphorylated with (32P)ATP and the catalytic subunit of cyclic AMP-dependent protein kinase from pig muscle. After digestion with pepsin, α-chymotrypsin and subtilisin a peptide with the amino-terminal sequence Ser-Arg-Tyr-(32P)SerP-Leu-Pro-Leu-Pro was isolated. A synthetic unphosphorylated heptapeptide with the same amino acid sequence, ending with leucine, was phosphorylated with an apparent Km of 400 μM, while the apparent Km value for fructose-1,6-diphosphatase was 30 μM (subunit concentration). The Vmax value was 20 times higher for the peptide than for the enzyme.

  • Variability in Skin Exposure in Machine Operators Exposed to Cutting Fluids
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Work, Environment and Health. - : Scandinavian Journal of Work, Environment and Health. - 0355-3140 .- 1795-990X. ; 24:2, s. 125 - 129
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective. This study describes a new technique for measuring skin exposure to cutting fluids and evaluates the variability of skin exposure among machine operators performing cyclic (repetitive) work. Methods. The technique is based on video recording and subsequent analysis of the videotape by means of computer-synchronized video equipment. The time intervals at which the machine operator's hand was exposed to fluid were registered, and the total wet time of the skin was calculated by assuming different evaporation times for the fluid. The exposure of twelve operators with different work methods was analyzed in six different workshops, which included a range of machine types, from highly automated metal cutting machines (ie, actual cutting and chip removal machines) requiring operator supervision to conventional metal cutting machines, where the operator was required to maneuver the machine and manually exchange products. Results; the relative wet time varied between 0% and 100%. A significant association between short cycle time and high relative wet time was noted. However, there was no relationship between the degree of automatization of the metal cutting machines and wet time. Conclusions. The study shows that skin exposure to cutting fluids can vary considerably between machine operators involved in manufacturing processes using different types of metal cutting machines. The machine type was not associated with dermal wetness. The technique appears to give objective information about dermal wetness. A comment: This publication is a result of a cooperation between the authors at Chalmers University of Technology and Gothenburg University, i.e. between the Department of Transportation and the Department of Occupational Health and the Department of Sociology.

  • Musculoskeletal Symptoms, Ergonomic Aspects and Psychosocial Factors in Two Different Truck Assembly Concepts
  • 1993
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Industrial Ergonomics. - 1872-8219 .- 0169-8141. ; 12:1-2, s. 35-48
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The project was carried out as a multidisciplinary correlational study of two truck-axle assembly systems (System A and B). System A (the old system) could be characterized as an unpaced line assembly system, whereas the change to the new system, System B, involved a parallelized system with longer job cycle time. The study included all permanent assembly workers in the two systems (System A 17 workers, System B 28 workers). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the two systems with respect to ergonomic factors, psychosocial factors and self-reported musculoskeletal symptoms. The job cycles were studied by means of video observation. Each subject answered a questionnaire regarding musculoskeletal symptoms and physical and psychosocial environment. The assemblers in System B were more satisfied with the physical work environment (e.g. noise, air), but less satisfied with the psychosocial environment, and the period prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms was not lower, compared with the assemblers in System A. Video observation techniques showed that deep forward flexion was less common, but that the work was more hand intense in System B. In System B, neck/shoulder symptoms were associated principally with physical work (load) variables, whereas low back symptoms were associated with psychosocial variables.

  • Ergonomics in Parallelized Car Assembly: A Case Study with References Also to Productivity Aspects
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Applied Ergonomics. - 0003-6870 .- 1872-9126. ; 27:2, s. 101 - 110
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This publication was gaining data at the very early phase of the Volvo Uddevalla plant projection process (it required a extensive time to complete and to finally publish). (That is, long before the authors became engaged in an extensive research programme financed by the National Institute for Working Life in Solna) (Cooperative for Optimisation of industrial production systems regarding Productivity and Ergonomics COPE). It deals with e.g. efficiency aspects and ergonomics of this (very) plant and the more embryonic aspects of the so-called tilting devices are evaluated in this publication (a controversial equipment at the early period of time).  As was developed by the Volvo personnels and the authors (ergonomic aspects was an accepted way for us to gain access to this plant, to deal with the assembly system design process was from the beginning not accepted (since this was a work task assigned only to the Volvo professionals). But this situation changed after some years (development of the assembly work instructions were a also an accepted work task for us scientist) (see other publications registered in Chalmers Public Library).

  • Self-assessed hearing problems in Sweden: a demographic study.
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Audiology : official organ of the International Society of Audiology. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0020-6091. ; 38:6, s. 328-34
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A study of self-assessed hearing problems was performed comprising 48,680 Swedish inhabitants aged 16-84 years. The participants of the survey responded to personal interviews during the period 1986-1993. One of the questions in the interview concerned difficulties of hearing in background noise. The total prevalence of the reported hearing problems was 10.7 per cent, varying from 2.4 per cent in the youngest age group to 30 per cent in the oldest. Men reported difficulties in hearing more often than women, except in the youngest age group. Hearing problems were more often reported by manual workers, unemployed and by those who had taken early retirement, than by non-manual employees and the self-employed. Regional differences regarding hearing problems were observed. The prevalence of self-reported problems was lowest in metropolitan Stockholm (7.9 per cent) and increased in the following order: other major cities (9.4 per cent), other cities (10.5 per cent), small population centres (12.5 per cent), agricultural areas (13.5 per cent) and sparsely populated forest areas (15 per cent). In summary, a number of factors related to ageing, socioeconomic status and domicile were related to self-assessed difficulties hearing a conversation. These factors obviously include determinants such as genetics, health status, gender-related differences, exposure to noise and possible conditioning effects of low-level noise exposure.

  • Patients with fibromyalgia and their conception of health after an intervention programme
  • 1995
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Occupational Therapy. - Abingdon : Informa UK Limited. - 1103-8128 .- 1651-2014. ; 2, s. 113-120
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fibromyalgia is a well-known syndrome interpreted as general muscular pain in the whole body and as pressure soreness in the so-called tender points. The cause of the syndrome is not yet clear and it has therefore been difficult to find proper treatment. The aim of this study was to describe how patients with fibromyalgia conceived their health after having taken part in an intervention programme based on ego-strengthening psychotherapy and the salutogenetic model. The intervention was performed by an occupational therapist and a physiotherapist. In this study, 10 patients were interviewed and data were analysed by the phenomenographic method. Four different catagories of health conceptions became evident as a result of the intervention; receiving confirmation, creating distance to things, gaining insight, and gaining control. The results showed that the patients had increased their sense of meaningfulness, comprehensibility and manageability of the pain syndrome, which led to improved health. Due to the fact that this kind of intervention requires comparatively small resources in terms of staff and financial expenditure it is suitable in small clinics, e.g. health care centres. Further research should be aimed at finding out whether this intervention also suits patients with other diagnoses or whether treatment in larger groups might produce equally favourable results. © 1995 Informa UK Ltd All rights reserved: reproduction in whole or part not permitted.
