  • Are chrome extensions compliant with the spirit of least privilege?
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Information Security. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1615-5262 .- 1615-5270. ; 21:6, s. 1283-1297
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Extensions are small applications installed by users and enrich the user experience of browsing the Internet. Browsers expose a set of restricted APIs to extensions. To be used, extensions need to list the permissions associated with these APIs in a mandatory extension file named manifest. In particular, Chrome’s permission ecosystem was designed in the spirit of the least privilege. Yet, this paper demonstrates that 39.8% of the analyzed extensions provided by the official Web Store are compliant with the spirit of least privilege. Also, we develop: (1) a browser extension to make aware regular users of the permissions the extensions they install; (2) a web app where extensions developers can check whether their extensions are compliant with the spirit of the least privileged; and (3) a set of scripts that can be part of the vendors’ acceptance criteria such that when developers upload their extensions to the official repositories, the scripts automatically analyze the extensions and generate a report about the permissions and the usage.

  • Perceptual Evaluation of Blended Sonification of Mechanical Robot Sounds Produced by Emotionally Expressive Gestures : Augmenting Consequential Sounds to Improve Non-verbal Robot Communication
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Social Robotics. - : Springer Nature. - 1875-4791 .- 1875-4805.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents two experiments focusing on perception of mechanical sounds produced by expressive robot movement and blended sonifications thereof. In the first experiment, 31 participants evaluated emotions conveyed by robot sounds through free-form text descriptions. The sounds were inherently produced by the movements of a NAO robot and were not specifically designed for communicative purposes. Results suggested no strong coupling between the emotional expression of gestures and how sounds inherent to these movements were perceived by listeners; joyful gestures did not necessarily result in joyful sounds. A word that reoccurred in text descriptions of all sounds, regardless of the nature of the expressive gesture, was “stress”. In the second experiment, blended sonification was used to enhance and further clarify the emotional expression of the robot sounds evaluated in the first experiment. Analysis of quantitative ratings of 30 participants revealed that the blended sonification successfully contributed to enhancement of the emotional message for sound models designed to convey frustration and joy. Our findings suggest that blended sonification guided by perceptual research on emotion in speech and music can successfully improve communication of emotions through robot sounds in auditory-only conditions.

  • Exploring emotion perception in sonic HRI
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: 17th Sound and Music Computing Conference. - Torino : Zenodo. ; , s. 434-441
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite the fact that sounds produced by robots can affect the interaction with humans, sound design is often an overlooked aspect in Human-Robot Interaction (HRI). This paper explores how different sets of sounds designed for expressive robot gestures of a humanoid Pepper robot can influence the perception of emotional intentions. In the pilot study presented in this paper, it has been asked to rate different stimuli in terms of perceived affective states. The stimuli were audio, audio-video and video only and contained either Pepper’s original servomotors noises, sawtooth, or more complex designed sounds. The preliminary results show a preference for the use of more complex sounds, thus confirming the necessity of further exploration in sonic HRI.

  • People, Ideas, Milestones : A Scientometric Study of Computational Thinking
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: ACM Transactions on Computing Education. - : Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). - 1946-6226. ; 21:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The momentum around computational thinking (CT) has kindled a rising wave of research initiatives andscholarly contributions seeking to capitalize on the opportunities that CT could bring. A number of literaturereviews have showed a vibrant community of practitioners and a growing number of publications. However, the history and evolution of the emerging research topic, the milestone publications that have shaped itsdirections, and the timeline of the important developments may be better told through a quantitative, scientometric narrative. This article presents a bibliometric analysis of the drivers of the CT topic, as well as itsmain themes of research, international collaborations, influential authors, and seminal publications, and howauthors and publications have influenced one another. The metadata of 1,874 documents were retrieved fromthe Scopus database using the keyword “computational thinking.” The results show that CT research has been US-centric from the start, and continues to be dominated by US researchers both in volume and impact. International collaboration is relatively low, but clusters of joint research are found between, for example, anumber of Nordic countries, lusophone- and hispanophone countries, and central European countries. The results show that CT features the computing’s traditional tripartite disciplinary structure (design, modeling, and theory), a distinct emphasis on programming, and a strong pedagogical and educational backdrop including constructionism, self-efficacy, motivation, and teacher training.

  • Generative comics: a character evolution approach for creating fictional comics
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Digital Creativity. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1462-6268 .- 1744-3806. ; 31:4, s. 284-301
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Comics can be a suitable form of representation for generative narrative. This paper provides an argument for this based on an analysis of properties of the comics medium, and describes a tool for character design and comic strip creation that applies interactive evolution methods to characters in a virtual environment. The system is used to interactively create artificial characters with extreme personality traits inspired by well-known comics characters.

  • A blockchain-based multi-factor authentication model for a cloud-enabled internet of vehicles
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Sensors. - : MDPI. - 1424-8220. ; 21:18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Continuous and emerging advances in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) have enabled Internet-of-Things (IoT)-to-Cloud applications to be induced by data pipelines and Edge Intelligence-based architectures. Advanced vehicular networks greatly benefit from these architectures due to the implicit functionalities that are focused on realizing the Internet of Vehicle (IoV) vision. However, IoV is susceptible to attacks, where adversaries can easily exploit existing vulnerabilities. Several attacks may succeed due to inadequate or ineffective authentication techniques. Hence, there is a timely need for hardening the authentication process through cutting-edge access control mechanisms. This paper proposes a Blockchain-based Multi-Factor authentication model that uses an embedded Digital Signature (MFBC_eDS) for vehicular clouds and Cloud-enabled IoV. Our proposed MFBC_eDS model consists of a scheme that integrates the Security Assertion Mark-up Language (SAML) to the Single Sign-On (SSO) capabilities for a connected edge to cloud ecosystem. MFBC_eDS draws an essential comparison with the baseline authentication scheme suggested by Karla and Sood. Based on the foundations of Karla and Sood’s scheme, an embedded Probabilistic Polynomial-Time Algorithm (ePPTA) and an additional Hash function for the Pi generated during Karla and Sood’s authentication were proposed and discussed. The preliminary analysis of the proposition shows that the approach is more suitable to counter major adversarial attacks in an IoV-centered environment based on the Dolev–Yao adversarial model while satisfying aspects of the Confidentiality, Integrity, and Availability (CIA) triad. © 2021 by the authors. • A Secure Network Model against Bot Attacks in Edge-enabled Industrial Internet of Things
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 1551-3203 .- 1941-0050. ; 18:11, s. 7998-8006
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The new Industry 4.0 standard has offered many advantages to the industries improving their production rate since it evaluates novel cutting-edge technologies like Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Cyber-Physical Systems, and Internet of Things to automate manufacturing processes so as to minimize time and economical costs while improving the quality of products. However, this rapid industrial transition carries risks in terms of security and privacy issues that arise. In this paper, we propose a novel secure network model to enhance network security and employees privacy in the Edge-enabled Industrial Internet of Things. Experimental results demonstrate encouraging performance rates in terms of accuracy, precision, recall, fall-out, F-measure, and Matthews correlation coefficient against known and unknown bot attacks.

  • A Slip of the Machinic Tongue
  • 2022
  • Konstnärligt arbete (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The title of the book, The Computer as Seen at the End of the Human Age, is a reference to the exhibition “The Machine as Seen at the End of the Mechanical Age”, curated by Pontus Hultén for MoMA in 1968, highlighting how technology was influencing art at a time when mechanical machines were increasingly replaced by electronic and chemical devices. Through its selection of contemporary art works the exhibition thus came to function as a recording of technological history.I never got to see the exhibition since I wasn’t born at the time, but a couple of years ago I came across a curious book with a tin cover. The book was published in connection to the exhibition, and the history recorded between its covers ends at approximately the same time that early computers start to make their way into the art world. In the fifty years that followed, art came to be marked by a digital presence.  It was that book, along with an interest in dead media, and a curiosity for art aided by algorithms, that sparked the idea for The Computer as Seen at the End of the Human Age.Here you will encounter new works by a selection of artists, specifically invited to use algorithms/AI to contribute to a continuous, self-reproducing, anachronistic, machine aided recording of history. A way to preserve, revise and/or comment upon digital history from the vantage point of present-day technology or through the lens of imagined future media, perspectives and technologies. The works have been created specifically for the book. Some are based on works by other artists, made in another era, repurposed for our time and technologies. Others are based on redundant technologies, revived and given new functions. Some adopt a critical or political approach to the algorithm and its impact on society. Several utilize it as an opportunity to create unique works for each separate copy of the edition. Thousands of files eventually compiled into 200 unique books, each with a different cover and different contents – generated, aided or influenced by algorithms. Participating artists: Geraldine Juárez, Cornelia Sollfrank/Winnie Soon, Mishka Henner, Shane Hope, !Mediengruppe Bitnik, Rosa Menkman, Rosemary Lee, Olle Essvik, Evan Roth, Jonas Lund, Darsha Hewitt, Carl-Johan Rosén, Linda Hilfling Ritasdatter and Jacek Smolicki.Editor: Olle Essvik
