  • Macroscopic alignment of silver nanoparticles in reverse hexagonal liquid crystalline templates
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Nano Letters. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1530-6992 .- 1530-6984. ; 2:12, s. 1403-1407
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A flexible method of preparing and macroscopically aligning nanoparticles of crystalline silver into millimeter long fibers is presented. The approach utilizes the dual functionality of a reverse hexagonal liquid crystalline template containing a built-in reducing agent facing the aqueous domain. The method is advantageous in that its slow kinetics allows for a thorough introduction of a silver salt into the liquid crystal before the reduction takes place, allowing for an efficient loading of he template and a retained mesoscopic ordering as evidenced by SAXS. It was confirmed by H-1 NMR that the oxyethylene groups of the amphiphilic polymer reduce the silver ions while being oxidized to aldehydes. The silver nanoparticles are uniform in size and in the same size range as the diameter of the aqueous domain of the liquid crystal (3 nm), further supporting that the silver particles form inside the liquid crystal. TEM images confirm the macroscopic alignment of silver nanoparticles into fibrils and the packing of fibrils into millimeter long fibers. The diameter of the fibrils and fibers ranges from 30 nm to several hundreds of micrometers. Electron diffraction analysis of a collection of silver nanoparticles confirms their crystallinity as three diffraction rings could be indexed to the face centered cubic structure of silver. A key to the successful macroscopic alignment of the nanoparticles is that the particles are formed inside the liquid crystal, thus minimizing the need for their diffusion i to and inside the liquid crystal.

  • Cryo-TEM observation of 3-dimensionally ordered aggregates of 5-nm gold particles in organic solvents
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Journal of Nanoparticle Research. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1572-896X .- 1388-0764. ; 6:6, s. 569-576
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, we show evidence for the assembly of ordered 3-dimensional aggregates of 5-nm gold particles in toluene, 1-octanol, n-decane, and chloroform. The use of plunge-freezing allows to freeze the solution containing the aggregates at a rate which does not allow reorganisation of the particles during sample preparation. The samples were then observed using cryo-transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) showing that most of the particles were part of ordered aggregates, thus proving that organisation already exists in solution. In some cases, the stability of the sample under the electron beam made it possible to record several pictures of the same aggregate at different angles and build animated tilt series.

  • Few-electron quantum dots in nanowires
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Nano Letters. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1530-6992 .- 1530-6984. ; 4:9, s. 1621-1625
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We demonstrate transport spectroscopy on bottom-up grown few-electron quantum dots in semiconductor nanowires. The dots are defined by InP double barrier heterostructures in InAs nanowires catalytically grown from nanoparticles. By changing the dot size, we can design devices ranging from single-electron transistors to few-electron quantum dots. In the latter case, electrons can be added one by one to the dots from 0 to similar to50 electrons while maintaining an almost constant charging energy, with addition spectra of the devices displaying shell structures as a result of spin and orbital degeneracies. The reduced dimensionality of the nanowire emitter gives rise to pronounced resonant tunneling peaks, where a gate can be used to control the peak positions.

  • One-dimensional steeplechase for electrons realized
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Nano Letters. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1530-6992 .- 1530-6984. ; 2:2, s. 87-89
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report growth of one-dimensional semiconductor nanocrystals, nanowhiskers, in which segments of the whisker with different composition are formed, illustrated by InAs whiskers containing segments of InP. Our conditions for growth allow the formation of abrupt interfaces and heterostructure barriers of thickness from a few monolayers to 100s of nanometers, thus creating a one-dimensional landscape along which the electrons move. The crystalline perfection, the quality of the interfaces, and the variation in the lattice constant are demonstrated by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and the conduction band off-set of 0.6 eV is deduced from the current due to thermal excitation of electrons over an InP barrier.

  • Arrays of Ge islands on Si(001) grown by means of electron-beam pre-patterning
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Nanotechnology. - : IOP Publishing. - 0957-4484. ; 14:2, s. 264-267
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We show that well-defined arrays of self-assembled Ge dots on Si(001) can be grown after pre-patterning the Si surface by means of an electron beam. The electron beam produces C-containing growth masks. The overgrowth of these masks with Si results in pits at the Si surface, in and around which Ge dots nucleate selectively. A manifold of different arrays can be obtained. Almost perfect arrays of quadruples of dots nucleate in the intersections of the four {11n} facets. This way of producing quantum dot arrays is very promising for producing dot structures suitable for use in the study of, for instance, dot-dot tunnelling and related effects.

  • Fabrication of cantilever based mass sensors integrated with CMOS using direct write laser lithography on resist
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Nanotechnology. - : IOP Publishing. - 0957-4484 .- 1361-6528. ; 15:10, s. 628-633
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A CMOS compatible direct write laser lithography technique has been developed for cantilever fabrication on pre-fabricated standard CMOS. We have developed cantilever based sensors for mass measurements in vacuum and air. The cantilever is actuated into lateral vibration by electrostatic excitation and the resonant frequency is detected by capacitive readout. The device is integrated on standard CMOS circuitry. In the work a new direct write laser lithography (DWL) technique is introduced. This laser lithography technique is based on direct laser writing on substrates coated with a resist bi-layer consisting of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) on lift-off resist (LOR). Laser writing evaporates the PMMA, exposing the LOR. A resist solvent is used to transfer the pattern down to the substrate. Metal lift-off followed by reactive ion etching is used for patterning the structural poly-Si layer in the CMOS. The developed laser lithography technique is compatible with resist exposure techniques such as electron beam lithography. We demonstrate the fabrication of sub-micrometre wide suspended cantilevers as well as metal lift-off with feature line widths down to approximately 500 nm.

  • Nano-aperture fabrication for single quantum dot spectroscopy
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Nanotechnology. - : IOP Publishing. - 0957-4484 .- 1361-6528. ; 14:6, s. 675-679
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a simple and controllable method for fabricating nano-apertures in a metal film using polystyrene nano-spheres as masks during the metal evaporation. We show how the processing conditions used during deposition of the spheres such as spin velocity, nano-sphere concentration and a reduction of the surface tension interplay and control the distribution of spheres. The fabrication method is ideal for luminescence studies by isolating individual nanometre-sized objects, which is exemplified by photoluminescence spectroscopy of single self-assembled Stranski-Krastanow quantum dots.

  • Direct observation of the molten state of nanometer-sized particles with an atomic force microscope: A feasibility study
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Journal of Nanoparticle Research. - 1572-896X. ; 4:4, s. 351-356
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An atomic force microscope (AFM) was used to directly examine the physical state of nanometer-sized particles. The critical diameter of indium particles, where evidence of melting at room temperature was observed, was 7.8 +/- 1.2 nm. This conclusion is based on a method relying on the manipulation of particles in ambient air and at constant temperature. This method involves a simple set-up that permits a combination of both manipulation and imaging of individual particles. To determine whether a particle is molten, three criteria are used: the merging of particles to form bigger spherical particles, a tip-induced shape change, and the formation of nanofibers. All three criteria have been checked using other particle materials. An attempt at 56degreesC revealed oxidation of the indium particles as the major problem for melting investigation. Manipulations under high-purity nitrogen atmosphere support the validity of the findings. The use of the AFM to determine whether a nanoparticle is molten is, however, complicated by the oxidation issue.

  • Role of surface diffusion in chemical beam epitaxy of InAs nanowires
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Nano Letters. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1530-6992 .- 1530-6984. ; 4:10, s. 1961-1964
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present growth studies of InAs nanowires nucleated from lithographically positioned Au seeds on InAs (111)B substrates. The nanowires are grown in a chemical beam epitaxy system and exhibit high aspect ratios and high homogeneity in length and width. Investigations of wire growth rate as a function of diameter, density, and time were performed and the results indicate that 80% of the growth is due to In species diffusing from the (111)B substrate surface. Furthermore, we have established that the diffusion length on the {110} wire side surfaces exceeds 10 mum. We also observe a decreasing length growth rate with increasing wire diameter.

  • Nanoimprint lithography for fabrication of three-terminal ballistic junctions in InP/GaInAs
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Nanotechnology. - : IOP Publishing. - 0957-4484. ; 13:5, s. 666-668
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present processing technology and characterization results for InP/GaInAs two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) three-terminal ballistic junction (TBJ) devices manufactured using nanoimprint lithography (NIL). To transfer sub-100 nm features into a high-mobility InP-based 2DEG material, we used SiO2/Si stamps made using electron beam lithography and reactive ion etching. After NIL, the resist residues are removed in oxygen plasma; this is followed by wet etching of InP/GaInAs to define the TBJ structures. Fabricated TBJ devices are characterized using scanning electron microscopy and electron transport measurements. Highly non-linear electrical characteristics as predicted by the theory (Xu H Q 2001 APPI. Phys. Lett. 78 2064) are demonstrated.
