  • The present summary concerns crystal structure investigations of the 1,4-ethanonaphtha1ene class of compounds. The structures of eight such compounds have been determined by the present author and coworkers. The investigated compounds were formed upon oxidation of phenols in Diels-Alder cycloaddition reactions or by further treatment of products from such reactions. The aim of this investigation has been to establish the conformation of the products in order to get information on the factors governing the stereospecific and regiospecific Diels-Alder reaction, and to study the molecular geometries in this type of strained molecules. Comparison is made to other 1,4-ethanonaphthalenes reported in the literature with regard to bond lengths, bond angles and also to puckering parameters used to describe the conformation of the products.
